  • For God sake, BBC, hire Charlie Kox again and put him in the F1 commentary team instead of that idiot James Allen.

  • someone should've told these guys about the rain

  • @ssrMarcel They did - that's how Mansell got in the mix. That Mondeo was a dog of a car and Mansell wouldn't have had a hope in the dry.

  • Motorsport at its best. Thank you from Italy for uploading it.

  • nice nice nice ford moneo + the driver = NICE :D !!!

  • "Can this boy drive!" - Yeah, 1992 F1 world champion, should've been in 1986 and 1987 too.

  • wow!!!!

  • Fucking brilliant that is. I'm an american and all they have is shit circle racing here. They don't show any real racing except Grand Am Series. Wish i lived in the UK you people know how to race properly.

  • @XLValenciaXL One word: ALMS. The racing in GT is always awesome.

  • @jbmass06 Yeah but they don't show it on TV. They show it on ESPN3.com but every time i go to that website it says something about blackout restrictions cause it's being shown in my local cable network and yet when i search the menu i can never find it.

  • @XLValenciaXL That sucks. But all the races are also broadcasted live on the alms official website. That's how i always watch the races.

  • @XLValenciaXL

Now that i call honest from americans, I agreed too..

  • Mansell was SO quick

  • Charlie Cox to the BBC to replace Brundle!

  • mansell was allways a tool

  • @MrSennagod He may have no personality, but hell can he drive!

  • Mansell was amazing that race coming back from 19th position where he started. He had an inferior car but when it was close for a first few minutes and it was about pure driving skill as oppose to mechanical advantage, he was a class above.

  • I wish we could see this all again on TV, Super Touring in the 90's was awesome, in fact, the 90's was the best decade ever :D

  • This is a fabulous clip. American NASCAR is in no way a match for the Anglo Touring racers!

  • mansell, cleland leslie CONTACT!!! doesnt get more exiting,Cleland was my hero being Scottish

  • マンチャンキレキレやな☆

  • awesome wheel to wheel on the limit in the RAIN wow, old skool ballsy racing

  • I hate living in America.

  • Awesome commentary!

  • @AMFForumvideo Cox is Australian as well :D

  • really nice guy too! better than that twat Menu!

  • thats racing

  • the wipers to max, the pedal to the max!

touch and touch in all curve...

oh man, this is called HAVE BALLS!

  • i love this A4... Audi is best, even today...

  • Ahh 1998, iwas 8 years old, Great year to watch BTCC and playing Toca Touring Cars 2 on Playstation. Can't get any better than this.

  • Bintcliffe seems to have an odd wheel on his car, I wonder why that is?

  • didnt look like mansell actually hit reid, looks like reid just lost it.

  • awesome racing, that blue Ford Mondeo looks awesome in the rain lol

  • Fabulous parking spot there for Reid. Lol.

  • Fantastic comentary!

  • Brilliant racing! It seems now when they race side to side with wheels touching, axles, suspension and steering all seems to get broken, whereas here, everything holds up fine.

  • THEY DROVE THEIR SOCKS OFF!!!

  • What you have to do to get a parking spot at the Pudsey Asda. Extraordinary. And to think they used to commentate on this madness.

  • i remember this, my dad managed the ford team, the atmosphere was crazy!

  • Is this the way touring car racing always works? If so, man I hate living in the US with only local TV! =(. Never get to see the good stuff.

  • what car was that which crashed into the barriers at 2:12 ?

  • @cagednm69 It was Anthony Reid's Nissan Primera ;)

  • @jbmass06 Why did some of the big name manufacturer teams pull out of btcc back in the day?Does not make sense to me,especaially when btcc was in its heyday.

  • @megaprtscr The cars were too expensive to run, the BTCC was going to die so for 2000 they convinced the 3 remaining manufacturers to engage 3 cars, but for 2001 they had to think about a new spec.

  • the late 90s where easily the best years in btcc

  • Amazing,i will never know why the btcc declined in popularity and big name teams???

  • THIS is racing!!!

  • Races like this remind you why the hosts need a set o' lungs on them = )

  • the shot @ 1:38 Audi v Vauxhall v Ford v Nissan thats what btcc was all about

  • dam that contour/mondeo is a great looking car. i love my svt contour

  • Good drivers=good races

  • 1:05 "This is amazing!!" LOL

  • The commentator is fucking PRICELESS!

  • Proper drivers, proper cars, proper racing. As much as I enjoy F1 and from a technical point of view it makes a huge contribution to motorsport and cars in general, the BTCC of the 90's is by far the best spectator motorsport ever seen. I could watch that all day long.

  • @phillylephonk

Yeah, I loved it. The races were unpredictable and tight. Most of the cars were competitive, despite being based on production models and notably different. Made one wonder why the F1 cars weren't equally competitive when they seemingly looked identical (remove the paint job and sponsors and ask people to tell them apart).

  • I guess I have to play TOCA 2 again :D

  • best race ever with all the best drivers of the century!!!

  • God i love racing in the wet! only time i ever do anygood :L

  • And people wonder why this is so much better than F1...BTCC Is the best form of racing in the world, no arguments

  • Oh this video takes me back some. These liveries are still familiar to me from playing an old racing simulator in the late 90's as a young boy.

  • do you know something if Reid had won this race and not spun off he would have tied with eventual champion Rydell in the final standing but he would have been champion on count back

  • Nigel Mansell is a legend, great in F1, great in touring cars, and he had the best mustache in racing history!

  • what, no jumped up yanks with nothing better to than sit and pretend they know about anything other than their "mamas portata chips and cool aid" claiming an awesome british video is fake?! ram it nascar!

  • thay were the touring cars not the shitty ones theses days thay shud bring them bak for a few races that wud be awsome

  • this is a dogfight!

  • Great, amazing, THAT IS REAL RACING!

And so must be commentated a touringcar race, german race-commentator look a this!

  • was this round 11 or 12?

  • Dominated!

  • I belive Ekström Drive there to, this Silver Audi with the Red Audi-Rings...

This Car Drove Ekström in 1998...

  • @kallo182 Yvan Muller is driving this Audi

  • @kallo182 yeah, Ekstrom never drove in the BTCC, he drove for the works team in the Swedish Championship, but in the British Championship the works cars were driven by Yvan Muller and John Bintcliffe.

  • Awesome racing this was the best era of Touring Car racing. Mansell and Ford a legendary combination!!!!!!

  • this is so much better than f1 racing, the guy is talking like his pants are on fire:)

too bad its hardly ever broadcasted in holland

  • this was, and is a classic race

  • watch and learn, NASCAR. watch and learn. THIS is real racing! :D

  • So brillant! Even looks like a movie!

  • amazing. in that time, btcc was interesting. now :S

  • i LOVE 90's cars! way better than those ugly ass Seat Leon nowadays!!!

  • Touring car racing in it's heyday.Amazing.

  • This is why I love touring car =D

  • Hahahha this is racing, don't like the guy infront? just punt him off LMFAO>

  • this is the btcc at its very best!!

    Bring back all the manufactures!!

  • I was there with my dad sitting on the infield by the Craner Curves and Old Hairpin. I was 9 years old at the time and it was the best race I'd ever seen in my life and it still is one of the best. God, I miss the Super Touring days. I also miss Charlie Cox's and John Watson's commentary. It was a fantastic partnership.

  • @RikMcCloud I agree, Charlie Cox & John Watson were fantastic...

  • @jbmass06 thing is, those two could commentate on just about anything.... antiques roadshow, cooking, knitting, horse racing, F1, arm wrestling... so much talent lol

  • @turbomoonie Cox and Watson commentating on knitting... that could actually work!

  • @RikMcCloud I was there two man, awsome race

  • Mansell was / is the ultimate racing driver. Awsome racer, very quick and he was head and shoulders above anyone for his bollocks.

  • This is pure racing on a high level! Entertaining as hell!

  • that isle of man guy is amazing

  • Superb, saw this live and was amazing. RIP David.

  • awesome sportsmanship

  • i ve heard the name of Yvan Muller. wow, he has been racing in a touring car for decades

  • Mansell's biggest strength were his huge bollocks.

Mansell's biggest weakness was the big chip on his shoulder.

  • Mansel makes the show..hahaha...he always did! :) Brilliantt race!

  • Epic drive by Mansell, really impressive driving considering he was driving an inferior car to the Vauxhall,Nissan and Audi.Yes that Mondeo is quite shitty.

  • God, Mansell is really a lion =O

All the amazing Gran Turismo 2 liveries!! Great!

  • kind of a shame Mansell didnt win this race

  • Nobody remembers who won it. We all only remember Mansell :D

  • one of the best rouring car races of all time, way better than V8 supercars that you get in australia...

  • @FormulaOneFan4Eva bullshit

  • hahaha! somebody who actually likes V8 supercars? i'm suprized there isn't a rip in the space/time continuum...

honestly, V8 supercars is so gay... the tracks aren't suitable for formula vee... the cars are basically identical... the commentators are totally biased to whatever constructor they support... if somebody attempts a pass there's an accident... it's difficult to even pass in the pits let alone on track and the cars aren't spectacular at all... what's so great about it?

  • The tracks are brillant. Does anywhere in the world have anything like Bathurst? Bont get me wrong I like F1, but the cars are more identical in F1 the in V8s. The commentators (other then Neil Crompton) are shit. But yeah, I like V8s.

  • okay, okay... so we have phillip island and bathurst, two good tracks... that's hardly a recommendation...

spa, monza, bahrain, turkey, malaysia, nurburgring, hockenheim, suzuka, fuji, silverstone, interlagos even montreal are all better than bathurst...

bathurst is glorified to the point of insanity, it produces terrible racing...

and there are 13 constructors in F1, the cars are way more different than in V8s, where the only thing slightly different is the engine and body...

  • @FormulaOneFan4Eva Bathurst is a great circuit. I think there had been very beatuful races in the past. You can't race there with formula 1, but when I see images from the past i just say, wow... think about what did in '88, I think, BMW with his tourning car team...epic.

  • I just wonder, how would Mansell have done, if he had got a chanse to drive the Mondeo from the 2000-season, because it was absolutely dominant.

  • The first race game I had was Toca Touring Cars... brings back wonderful memories.

  • @tubeyou443 Yeah me too that was a wonderful game, too bad no one has thought about releasing a Supertouring simulation game now, that would be fantastic ^^

  • @tubeyou443 wasa brilliant game that!

    brilliant vid this nice up

    5/5

  • @tubeyou443 i have Toca 2 Touring Cars, i still play it! amazing game! :)

  • @tubeyou443

Thats where I learnt most of the British tracks!

I used to love it when the other cars would be in your mirrors, flashing their headlights to psych you out.

    Codemasters at their best.

  • AMEN!

  • @tubeyou443 I had toca touring cars 2, simply epic game

  • The BTCC was at height in the 90's and it is a shell of it's former self

  • Probably one of the best touring car races in history

  • I love this race :D And Donington is an amazing racetrack ! Are public days organised there ?

  • this is what i called racing bumpin each other and tradin paint racing in the rain is so cool we need more racing like this

  • VAUXHALL RULZZZZZZ ;)

  • Is this a wet race? Looking how insane they drive I dont think so...

  • Absolutely Fan-tastic.

  • The old Mondeo did indeed look good. Shame it was a bit of a nail. This was a great race, but I don't think it was as good as the 1992 finale. It was bloody awesome though!

  • Just great racing. And damn that old mk2 Mondeo looked good. :)

  • Charlie Cox also made that race one of the best for me :)

  • wow

  • best btcc battle!!!

  • This race was the best BTCC of all time imo.

I remember watching this live, loved every minute of it.

BTCC is NOTHING compared to this now.

  • hahahaha "has it's own heros too, like James Thomson (video ends abruptly) :D

  • perfect ending...

  • John Cleland, the greatest!!!

  • wtf it says that Sirius1985's comment has been deleted, I didn't even touched anything...

So here is the original comment: " Imagine if Murray Walker had still been going the commentary!! Don't think his ticker could've handled it bless him

    Wonderful racing"

  • hmm. lol if that was me, I didnt mean to ..

regardless, my comment stands .. this is indeed wonderful racing

  • People can delete their own comments now...

  • I'm using Youtube since 2007 and i didn't know that. Now i understand ;)

  • This race just puts a smile on your face, its not about who won, its about the joy of the racing, drivers doing their thing and spectators and viewers loving it. All lifes troubles and problems are non existent for those laps, thats what you want to see and to me is more important than the result, entertain me! These guys did and i thank them for it, wonderful.

  • Thanks for posting this.

It's so true that similarly to F1, this was a time of more excitement in BTCC. I think the best of Touring Cars was actually a few years earlier, with Group-A M3s achieving up to 650bhp.

Donnington is a much more funky circuit than Silverstone, which I always find a little bit sterile. I'm glad F1's going there at least for this year.

In my opinion, the Brands Hatch Grand Prix were the best Formula One races in England and it'd be good if they were there again.

  • Really amazing!!!

  • This is the BEST touring car racing ever....I miss the touring car regs of the late 90's....

  • remind me toca touring championship on psx

    RIP dave

  • One of the bets BTCC races 2 date, would love to see some of the teams back in it but its gotten better over the last few years know the S2000 regulations have come into play

  • John Cleland a legend

  • Mansell The legend!

  • I watched a lot of BTCC on Speed in the late 90's and this is by far the best race I've ever seen in any form of motorsport!

  • fukin hell wot a race!

  • this is what good raceing is all about.

  • I really hope the BTCC return to 'Super Touring' regulations one day. I know it was expensive but produced such wonderful racing and sell-out crowdes.

  • GOLD days of Touring Car Racing in Europe ... simply GREAT !! thx for vid

  • RIP Dave Leslie and Will Hoy...this race will never be forgot!

  • it was a great race, remember cleland and mansell laughing about it in the post race interview!?!

  • thx 4 the post jb. man thats y i love britain: racing culture. greetings from germany

  • Shame Mansell didn't win :(

I think he forgot about the layout that BTCC use in Donington Park unlike old F1 which used the one with Melbourne hairpin, that's why he ran wide at the final turn :)

  • I have followed the BTCC since about 1992, when i was a little tacker. It's really what got me into racing. Shame BTCC's not even a shadow of what it was during the ST days.

I never get sick of watching this race, all the overtaking, Nige's great run up to the front from the rear of grid, and Charlie Cox going crazy in the commentary box!

    Love it!

RIP David Leslie...such a great driver, character, and just a great bloke. We miss your presence sorely.

  • I watched Tourning Cars a lot back in 1996 -98. Such intense Racing. This is Mansell at some of his very best.

  • Awesome days racing back then, just goes to show how good a driver Nigel Mansell is.

  • makes some of the BTCC of todays racing look boring in comparison!

some brilliant driving in this race. :)

  • ah ,i miss the good old days of BTCC.

  • Hard but fair racing. Just awesome!

  • 5 stars and favorite

  • What a great race! Unbelieveable!

  • Best touring car race of all time - No question

  • PLEASE upload more 90' BTCC !!!! Please

  • I'd like to, but this is the only one i have :(

  • 90's BTCC was the absoloute best. Nissan P11's FTW! It's shit now, safety, lack of speed etc. and hatchbacks and coupes?! 'saloon car racing'!

    RIP David Leslie!

  • BTCC will never be the same again. Was so much faster and more entertaining back in 90-98. Many memories screaming at the tv for cleland to win :O)

  • I wish more car manufacturers wuld come back to touring cars and make it wot it woz

  • John Cleland, the best there is!

Specially in the cavalier GSI 16v.

  • Just shows how talented these drivers are, the conditions where awful, yet they did so well not take each other out.
