  • Best explanation I have found. The apron really helps you understand things better.

  • damn. such a great teacher. i actually learned something today.

  • my 10 year old brother would be able to understand what a colostomy is after watching this video

    Clyde is awesome. :D <3

  • No genius, sick peolple get them to save their lives.

  • so like.. do gay people get these?

  • Very, very helpful!!! Thank you.

  • god clyde. damn it

  • I also looked up this term to find out as to why Clyde couldn't have pooped in the urinal because of the colostomy he got at age five.

Thanks. The visual made it very easy to understand.

  • thank you for this information. It helps.

  • Wearing a bag of shit under your clothes for the rest of your life? I would sooner die, would much sooner death than the latter. Imagine going on a date would be even worse for guys! Physical activity would be would be very restricted, someone playfully punching you in the stomach! Paranoid out of your head about leakages or smells or anything going wrong with the bag in public, and the whole botheration of using it going to the toilet, it would suck big time.

  • @Daveyslingshot

Yes it would suck, but I'm sure a lot of people who are watching this are trying to find out about the procedure, for themselves or relatives. Comments like yours are insensitive and childish. This is quite obviously not a video for entertainment purposes, keep your comments like that to yourself, idiot.

  • @jimbocondron Thanks for your comment, I agree 100%!

  • @Daveyslingshot

My sister used to date a guy who had a colostomy. I never would have know if somebody hadn't told me. As far as I know, it never presented any problems for him. He had absolutely no physical limitations that I know of, and he was about as far from paranoid as you can get. I don't know if he LIKED it, but I'm sure he was a lot happier pooping into a bag than dying an excruciating death from Crohn's Disease.

  • @akumacornflakes Thank you for your comment, it is so true.

  • @Daveyslingshot

It doesn't suck, but it can make you become more attuned to it. I have one and I worry about gas, leaks, and odors, but really those are minor things if you manage it well. BTW, I am married and it definitely doesn't limit physical activity.

I respect your opinion and your decision to never get one however.

  • Clyde couldn't have poop in the urinal because he had a colostomy at age 5.

  • I looked this term up after watching south park, haha

  • @jbilunes Clyde

  • @jbilunes Me too :)

  • Simple and effectively made, well done!

  • eu gostaria que a pessoa que explica essa tecnica coloca-se legendas para entendermos melhor o procedimento.video muito bom mas c a legenda ficaria ainda melhor .

  • Wow. Short, sweet, and to the point. That was way less complicated than I thought. Thanks!

  • @shmily1996 this isn't preventable

  • @countertopchaos ...actually, this procedure can give a new lease on life to many people of all ages.

  • very well done....thank you

  • youtube is awesome..

  • Is that permanent or do they hook it back up right eventually?

  • @spencehj It can be either permanent or temporary depending on why the surgery was done.

  • NO THANK U

  • @fuasshole666 Yep, I am going to pass (no pun intended)

  • This is great to tell ppl what i have had done :) much appreciated

  • Suddenly took an interesting turn as she connected the sigmoid to the anterior abdomen. This is teaching as it is supposed to be - clear, concise, visual, and memorable.

  • thank u...amazing way to describe it...

  • i love the apron! and great teaching! thank you.

  • i love this...really learned alot

  • thanks....awesome vid and very easy to understand!!!!!!!!!!!!thank you

  • Thank you for this video. It really helped me understand what a colostomy really is.

  • fascinating!

  • i love this model as new way of teaching..

    5 stars...

  • Thank you, I have a family member having this operation and it good to be able to understand what will happen insted of having to ask questions

  • You are welcome;) I wish your family member well. If you or any other family member has a question, I will be glad to help. Thanks again for the comment.

  • @gacwocn This was one of the best simplified medical videos that I've seen on Youtube. Do you have anymore posts or know of any as simple as yours?

  • i learned alot from this...

    thanks

  • Thank you, its a interesting surgery;)

  • great work..well done

  • Thank you, I enjoy working with it.

  • reminds me of Steve Brule's "the Body" skit

  • Excellent demonstration, thank you.

  • thank u

  • I showed this video to my Care Aide students. They found it very helpful to help them to understand colostomies. Thanks.

  • my grandma had a colostomy

  • I would rather have this lady teaching as my nursing fundamental professor than the idiot's I currently have.

  • i had this done you make it much simpler than the reall= thing it hurts it stinks hope you never get this

  • I want to thank you, I just had this surgery and I was quite confused on how it works, This was more informative than anything my surgeon explained, thanks again

  • What a clever visual aid! I hope you patented this!

  • This is useful for people who work in the medical field.

  • so how do u take a dump then, do you have to push or it comes out of nowhere?

  • You do not have to push for the stool to come out the stoma; you dont really feel it either (so Im told). You wear a little plastic pouch that fits over the stoma, and the stool comes out into the bag. You change the bag when necessary. I'm sure this may sound odd....but it meant having this surgery to save your life it would be worth it...don't you think?

  • yea, but it would be pretty embarrasing when it comes 2 being with someone else(if u kno wat i mean), but if it meant either die or live with it, I'll live..so how would u kno when its coming out, do u feel it then?

  • You dont feel it coming out because you dont have any nerve endings in your intestines. it empties into a colostomy bag, and there is nothing disgusting or embarrassing about it, it doesnt smell because the bags have filters.

  • ok thnx

  • hey glad you corrected that guy but what about relieving yourself of gas (farting) and no i'm not joking. Also can a person know when they had a stool i assume the weight of the poop weighs down the bag so they know?

  • Farting is a natural part of passing the gasses which are formed by excretion, since they do not have joins between their intestines and anus there is no way for them to pass gas in this way. Gas is passed through the filters, like I said in the other guys comment.

Some people know when they are forming a stool, some people don't. it totally depends on the persons body and how their body reacts to it. The colostomy bag does get heavy when full, but it doesn't weigh them down as such.

  • Also when their bag is full, depending on what type of bag it is they will either empty it or dispose of it :)

  • okay thanks for the insight

  • a very smart way of demo...thank you for sharing this.

  • i'm a newly registered nurse with little experience. the demonstration you had surely helps! thank you so much! more power!

  • if anyone here has had or still has a colostomy, are you ever tempted to poke your large intestine and if you do does it hurt? Also do you find it a bit gross.

  • Same here not so gross, but it smells when you change the bag :P

  • very interesting

  • Wonderful demonstration.

  • i love it. well said.

    your apron helps a lot to explain and demonstrate it well.. =}

  • The end portion of bowel (now connected only to the rectum) may be removed, or sutured closed and left in the abdomen. In the future this allows reconnection or "takedown" if wanted. If the rectal portion of the remaining colon is left in place it's called the "Hartman's pouch." The Hartman's pouch should remain viable and may produce mucous which will be expelled from the rectum.

Question: If a person with a colostomy and Hartman's pouch needed a suppository, where would it be inserted?

  • Well, your question is a hard one. I 'll try to deduce something, If the medicine (suppository) must be absorved by the intestines I suppose it must be inserted where the intestines are, I mean, through the stoma in the abdomen. Right or wrong?

  • I apologize for my late reply to your answer. The rectum is a highly vascular area of the colon that is best suited for the suppository insertion. Now in saying this...you must know the Hartman's pouch is adequate size to accept the suppository before you insert it.

  • Suppositories are mainly used because it is either local or the most convient way to admister the drug. Naturally no local colon drug use would be nessary as there is no function to the old colon. And due to this problem, a suppository wouldnt be the most convient route of adminstration therefore the doctor would find an alternate method.

Also as long as the colon still has its blood supply and the anus is intact a supositry would still work throught the anus, but dependant on other factors.

  • Well said! Thanks

  • Thank you for such a wonderful lesson. I'd love to have one of those aprons, where could I get one please? Thank you

  • Thank you for this vidio info.

I have recently had this surgery and I think this should be viewed by all before hand.

  • Great teaching using visual aids.

  • Great way to explain it to everyone who doesnt't understand what the surgery entails.

/no, it's not easy, but videos that educate like this one help those who need a demonstration.

  • you make it sound so easy, but sorry try having the operation, it is not easy at all.

  • What a great teaching idea!!!

  • Great video, i had two surgeries on my large intestin in 46 days: 1st colostomy because i had a breast inside and 2nd an obstuction in my illeon.

    Nowadays i'm fine

  • EXCELLENT teaching tool. any possibility of getting it mass produced?
