Did you mean the V7 chord is E9? I guess that's part of my problem. It's just what I'm used to, which is hearing E7alt resoving to minor. Not that E9 can't resolve to Amin, just that I'm not used to hearing it, so it sounds odd to me. Anything that gets you to practice scales is great. When you get them playing A Mel Minor over G#7alt is when it gets really fun, resoving to C#Maj or Min.

Oh of course. It isn't that Melodic Minor doesn't work, it just isn't that interesting. Harmonic minor has a major 7th, just like Melodic Minor. Not sure what you were referring to in the b7 comment. It's a fine track for Melodic, and Harmonic. But there's a track in Gmin for Melodic minor done by someone else that comes up in the related videos that sounds more like Melodic Minor Harmony.

@mellodc Sorry I removed my comment about b7 as soon as I typed it! I was talking rubbish after a late night. I meant the 6th vs b6.

I can't really argue with personal preference. All i'd say to people is try working them both into your solo. Perhaps the 6th of melodic minor would work well as a passing tone. Bear in mind also that in this track, the V chord includes that 6th tone which could be highlighted.

I think this is a better backing track for A Harmonic Minor.

@mellodc If I'm looking at the right video you could use several minor scales over it...

@mellodc It's better to use a Iminor to IV dominant or IV major if you want to practice melodic minor...or just a straight minor 6th chord vamp! You are correct that this has harmonic minor leanings

can i use the A minor penatonic scale on this backing track?

@08RMKaka Yes, but it won't carry the same harmonic weight as melodic minor (which uses the major 7th as opposed to the flat 7th of minor pentatonic) so I would use it sparingly and perhaps just over that tonic A minor chord. Just my opinion.

Actually it's quite nice to throw in the minor pentatonic from time to time, but the minor 7th is a bit of a landmine if you don't resolve it to the Major 7th subsequently.

@fretjamdotcom any song where you arent hearing the 6th will work just fine for both scales... just like any song where you dont necessarily hear the 7th will work for harmonic and natural.
