At an ISKCON temple(Atlanta, GA.) this past Sunday(1-15-12) I heard an "Indian" man call a homeless "black" person he gave some food to a "chela"(slave/servant). Right in front of me and another "black" person. I don't know if you heard that word while in India. Are you still out there?

@NashidBey I lived in the same apartment in Delhi for over seven years, and people made no bones about getting in our business when it was convenient for them (demanding we put up Diwali lights, demanding we NOT allow the delivery men past our gate, trying to get us evicted for hosting friends whom they perceived to be Muslim, etc.). But a group of kids used to play on our street and when they'd pass by, they'd yell "Habshi." Everyone was quiet and it was nobody's business, then.

Here is what I am seeing that the presenter here is not understanding: All countries are essentially racist. Has he ever been to Japan? Korea? China? Africa? @steve0281 I lived in Korea, Mali, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Germany, England & India- I've visited more. I do understand that many people take ethnocentrism for granted. It saddens me how often people have told me to 'get used' to racism, or that I do not understand. Worse is this belief that the US is the only multi-cultural model. There is a very informative book called "The Black Girl Curse" that covers this exact subject. Black men were falling and crawling to black women until black women completely lost their minds behind an absolute tsunami of government assistance programs in the mid 70's and early 80's that ranged from free rent and medical care to free on the job training to preferred military recruiting for minority females and since the mid 70's there has been a mass exodus away from black women.

This leads many of us to hate ourselves, to literally try to erase ourselves and mistreat those who look like the 'dark native' that whites have taught us to see in the mirror. diepiriye, you are wasting your time. Although I have been trumpeting your viewpt since I can remember (I'm Indian), I have realized it will take many, many generations for Indians' view on color to change, if ever. The colorism and racism has been born out of 1000s of years of invasions from the north: iranians, arabs, turks, mongols, british, etc.,which has brought about a sort of stockholm syndrome. Not all think like this, but too many do.

I'm not discouraged, rather, I have come to the realization that telling a racist/colorist Indian about his faults only puts him on the defensive. The only way I see change coming about is via more exposure to foreign media. Seeing american TV with black stars etc will awaken a "black is beautiful" movement in India. Actually such movements have existed but they need more critical mass and some kind of tipping point to follow through.

that's the complicated part. If it were a clear black vs white issue, it would have been resolved. But since it's more nebulous, the issue remains. what i mean is, dark skin is more akin to having a big nose or being short, aesthetic qualities and it's not linked in with caste or socioeconomic issues. caste will be beaten eventually as it is becoming less and less important in the big cities. But colorism, I think it will stay and that's tragic. In fact, colorism is still an issue in the US..

In India, a dark man's brother could be light complected. also a dark man has access to educational opportunities. So it's not seen as some rigid point of interest. Certainly, this reminded me that I am not here to attack folks, and so this video reflect more of my feelings that I would share face to face. It's easy to assume that white is generic, and I have often encountered people of all colors that see whiteness as generic or normal, while we are all odd, and so we treat each other as strange. I loved that in mali I was welcomed home.

Stop spreading wrong notion by Indians. We (indians) never ever discriminated anyone on basis of skin colour. On Caste basis yes, but it is diluting at a very fast pace. For north eastern people, we are not racist. I am from UP(North India) lived in Delhi for about one month,met many Northeasterns, made frienship with them, had a good time. Although I have been trumpeting your viewpt since I can remember (I'm Indian), I have realized it will take many, many generations for Indians' view on color to change, if ever. The colorism and racism has been born out of 1000s of years of invasions from the north: iranians, arabs, turks, mongols, british, etc.,which has brought about a sort of stockholm syndrome. Not all think like this, but too many do.

I'm not discouraged, rather, I have come to the realization that telling a racist/colorist Indian about his faults only puts him on the defensive. The only way I see change coming about is via more exposure to foreign media. Seeing american TV with black stars etc will awaken a "black is beautiful" movement in India. Actually such movements have existed but they need more critical mass and some kind of tipping point to follow through.

that's the complicated part. If it were a clear black vs white issue, it would have been resolved. But since it's more nebulous, the issue remains. what i mean is, dark skin is more akin to having a big nose or being short, aesthetic qualities and it's not linked in with caste or socioeconomic issues. caste will be beaten eventually as it is becoming less and less important in the big cities. But colorism, I think it will stay and that's tragic. In fact, colorism is still an issue in the US..

But unlike India, the US does have some darker women in major movie and modeling roles eg angela basset . so India is more extreme in their colorism. In India, a dark man's brother could be light complected. also a dark man has access to educational opportunities. So it's not seen as some rigid point of interest. It is seen as a quality such as being short as opposed to being tall vis-a-vis being a man. This is another reason why change..

Make movies and tv shows with dark skinned leads, and show them in a positive light. People are easily influenced by cultural trends, and these trends can be manipulated. So preaching will do nothing; showing a sexy, beautiful, dark-skinned woman who is confident and desired in a movie, can set off a spark....

It expresses a 'perfect past simple' that is not often used in English, but, interestingly, common in French. Even though it is an existing form of speech in English, it is not in common usage. There are a lot of such examples of West African syntax in languages throughout the New World, from north to central and south America. I use it here to evoke that sentiment.
