for me , that closing rapid section of the Exposition is the most sublime played..05:25 to 06:19 how merzhanov "floats" up and gradually from the top (very difficult chordal passages with inner double notes in the right hand) smoothly accelerates as if also falling down to earth before the final runs...amazing..i've never any comparable to that utter refinement ..
THIS is the great recording I had been looking for again after a long, long time. it was my first hearing of the concerto from an old recording, literally 3 decades ago...and i was SURE then it would be hard to find a comparably excellent recording. imo, better than any i have ever heard in the perfect mix of technical, sound concept and the musicality and lyricism within the "big concept". amazing.
@tedly10027 Merzhanov served in the Soviet Army - returned after the 2nd world war to playing , entered the All Soviet Top Contest - and TIED first prize with Richter - all that after a LONG service in the army...and this was one of his first recordings after his "return".

I love this! This is a truly great performance, one of the very best versions of Rach3, IMO.
