FREEDOM is not just to be able to choose to wear short skirt and tank top, take on less clothes. Freedom is also the opposite, namely to choose to wear long skirt + veil, long tunic, to choose to wear more clothes!

I agree! I'm a Catechuman in the Orthodox Church, and many there have discarded the headcovering. I wore it for the first time last Sunday, and found I could actually pay more attention to the Liturgy! I feel more protected when I cover my head. As soon as I get some underscarves, I intend to even cover for school. I have found that men are more respectful and a lot less flirtatious when I cover.
I understand a bit about hijab and why people wear it. I am only trying to bridge the gap between the faithful and those who do not understand faith in any real sense. It is easier to understand ideas of modesty, I think, than deeply theological ones. With regard to acceptance and understanding, I think it is important to frame things in a way that is easily understood. Many people do not care about God, Allah.....and if anything, talking in such exclusive terms only alienates them. =)

There is a correlation between the percentage of Muslims is a country and it's tolerance, or lack thereof. That's true, but freedom means we all have the right to dress in a way that is comfortable for us. Just because I cover more of my body does not mean I am ashamed of it- it only means that I cherish my physical form and do not wish to share it with everyone. It is my private body. Just as we don't share our bodies in a more intimate fashion with every person we meet, I choose to dress more conservatively so as to keep parts of my form private. That is my choice, and you don't have to agree.

I agree. Christian women are told to cover, also, but we stopped doing it a long time ago. Now I go to Church and see women all sexy (for church?!?!?!) and it's a little obscene. Nobody values themselves anymore, nobody values women- only as sexual objects. As soon as a woman is less than sexy...as soon as she asserts her independence or dresses modestly, she is disregarded and discarded. The West has some strange ideas. I love hijab, too, and as a Catholic woman I wish it came back.

I agree! I'm a Catechuman in the Orthodox Church, and many there have discarded the headcovering. I wore it for the first time last Sunday, and found I could actually pay more attention to the Liturgy! I feel more protected when I cover my head. As soon as I get some underscarves, I intend to even cover for school. I have found that men are more respectful and a lot less flirtatious when I cover.

I understand a bit about hijab and why people wear it. I am only trying to bridge the gap between the faithful and those who do not understand faith in any real sense. It is easier to understand ideas of modesty, I think, than deeply theological ones. With regard to acceptance and understanding, I think it is important to frame things in a way that is easily understood. Many people do not care about God, Allah.....and if anything, talking in such exclusive terms only alienates them. =)

Hey, I see where you're coming from. I believe we should all be tolerant, but I also believe such tolerance should be reciprocal. There is a correlation between the percentage of Muslims is a country and it's tolerance, or lack thereof. So, I believe that if we trully believe in world peace the Muslim populatio should remain where they can be goverened by their own sharia law.

Your argument is very weak and does not address the fact that the hijab is mandatory and therefore cannot stand for freedom; this is why it is a symbol of oppression. Not to say that everything else in Islam makes sense, because it doesn't.
