I didn't realise BMI was so old. It makes sense now why it is so flawed. According to BMI i'm about 8 kilos (20 lbs) over weight at 187cm and 92 kilos. But i'm a recently retired elite athlete and my body fat percentage is reasonably low (it should be lower but what can i say bacon rocks) And further more a guy like Ronnie Coleman would be considered morbidly obese by BMI calculations yet he has an extremely scarce body fat percentage.
Nice video. For all of you who don't want to do the calculations by hand, there is an app called BodyEngine that will do it for you. It will not only show you your BMI, but also the number of calories you need to eat to reach your goal weight by any goal date. It is free and very cool.
24.16 is very close to being overweight according to BMI, even though I'm actually in the best shape I've ever been in. Like this guy says, BMI is flawed, especially if you actually go the the gym and have built up a decent amount of lean mass. If you want to know the status of your weight, look elsewhere.
@M055B0RG Lol, the obvious answer is it doesn't mean anything. No one's weight stays exactly the same. Even throughout a normal day your weight will change. Think about it.
some people i know (who are naturally lean) will always stay the same no matter what , even if they dont eat for a couple days , the most change is a pound or two
@M055B0RG You're talking complete rubbish. No one's weight will stay the same "no matter what", especially if they don't eat for a couple of days. Unless you're physically monitoring their weight daily with a very accurate set of scales (which is extremely doubtful), you couldn't possibly know either way. Who the fuck doesn't eat for a couple of days anyway? Bullshit!
I suggest you educate yourself on how health & fitness works before you sound any more retarded. Just sayin'.
obviously but normal scales dont show a couple of grams that might gain or lose , your proabably out of shape and had fitness issues ur wholelife hahahahahah =D
@M055B0RG Funny how you've decided to assume I'm out of shape, with zero facts leading you to that conclusion. Pretty much sums up all your other clueless posts tbh. Not that I need to say this, but I'm actually in pretty great shape. When I'm not powerlifting, I compete in sports and martial arts. Can you say you're that active? Obviously not looking at your previous posts :)
@M055B0RG Oh and I've heard of fasting. My personal view is that it's retarded, but if people want to follow their own beliefs, I'm not going to stop them. Back to why you brought it up in the first place though - if you don't east for days, you WILL lose weight. The fact you don't realise that is amusing. You're god damned clueless.

I'm 5-6 230-235 lbs my waist is 44% of my height. There is no evidence that muscle causes problems. Insurance companies say it strains the heart. What they do not consider is that people with larger frames generally have larger heart and lungs
I'm a 22 year old female, 5'4", and I weigh 125 lbs. According to several BMI calculators found via Google (because math is not my strong point, so I wasn't going to attempt Brad's equation), my BMI is 21.5, putting me in the normal range. My goal weight is 115 pounds, which is what I weighed when I graduated high school.

So... would you think I'm a healthy weight? I'm 13, 5'4" and weight 140 lbs. The BMI calculator says I'm overweight but my waist is about 30 inches... Is that healthy?
YO BRRAD your the man!!! thanks for the videos i watched every single one im215 and been trying to get cut forever now i run 2miles a day and was doing insanity but not really seeing what i want but i will try eatstop eat and see how it goes thanks man.. BRAD KNOWS TOO MUCH how u so smart!
BMI is absolute BS, my brother in the law is a corporal in the army and is incredibly fit and lean and weighs around 230 lbs and is 5ft 10, which means he is obese (which is so far from the truth).
I could do with losing weight, but according this calculator I need to lose 100 lbs to be a healthy weight. With this information I spoke to my doctor who said I needed to lose weight but 100 lbs would be far too drastic for a man of man natural size and that the bmi calculator doesnt not count muscle
I agree with the video.. BMI tells you if you need to loose weight or maybe gain some weight. But i think BMI is not always accurate. If you are fitting into your clothing better than you are loosing weight. I found this cool site which actually does BMI calculation and also tracks your calories for 30 days. thexorb.com is the site.. it also has calorie intake calculator that calculates how much calorie you should intake based on your weight, sex, etc

BMI is always wrong. Bmi doesn't state your bodyfat percentage . For example imagine an athlete which who would have more muscle making him a little heavier than the average guy and even less bodyfat. According to BMI most athletes with strong physiques (sprinters, wrestlers footballers etc) keeping in mind im talking about the athletes with low bodyfat , the BMI would place most of them in the overweight category . These athletes are the fittest people you'll know
I can barely get down to the top range of BMI for my height (6 feet) before my percent body fat becomes unhealthily low. Why? Because I exercise, run, and lift weights. BMI is calibrated for scrawny individuals who can both LOOK and BE obese in terms of a high percent body fat. Its a broken system, and useful only for mcdonalds eating coke swilling couch potatoes who's only weight loss comes from crash fad diets and muscle loss. BMI is up there with a dwarf in the stomach causing tummy ache
@michael38921 There's nothing wrong with BMI as an average over a population, but it seems the categories are really strict - i.e. I'm 5'5 160 lbs, have a little puppy fat and I'm all of a sudden overweight. Do I have to have no stomach fat whatsoever to be 'normal?' My parents probably have a BMI closer to 30 (or high 20s) and they don't have any health problems/high blood pressure/diabetes. Mind you I have big leg muscles so the average joe would probably be fatter for their weight and height
BMI stands for "Bad Mans Idea" and is only constructed to make fat people feel bad about themselves. You should be ashamed of yourself for preaching this hypochrisy any further. True beauty lies in TRUE OBESITY!!
Thank you Brad. You make very good sense. I always have had alot of muscle in my legs and I have the classic "V " shape for a man. But the BMI has me overweight. But my waist is 34 inches since high school and my height is 6 feet. Thank you for this explanation. Besides, this calculation comes from the 1800s which is rather antiquated and should be adjusted to accommodate much larger and healthier men and women who exercise alot, like myself.
Hello Brad, I'm not 100% agree with your ratio of height per waist because you can be lean and have some stubborn fat on waist and then the ratio became wrong
According to BMI I am morbidly obese I am 5-7" and 230 lbs so my bmi is around 38. The waist measurments work best if you are fairly tall. If you are shorter than average it will start to deviate. If you follow it strictly if someone is 80" tall they can have a 40" waist and still weigh 230 lbs. Yet if they are 60" tall and they weigh 230 their waist has to be less than 30".
@evb4mvp well obviously u know that so why wud even want to worry about that, its for the 'average' looking people that dont work out for extreme sports or something, or people that are just fat.
@VinzorBE because an average person should be getting in healthy foods and doing the right amount of excersize. also some people are naturally bigger or smaller. bmi makes a generalization of everyone and doesnt take much other than hight and weight into consideration.
@omnipotent1995 BMI is helpful to determine what we should weigh to fit the mould of the average person. If you were to reverse the calculations starting with a BMI of 25 and your height of 69 inches, you will be able to determine your maximum weight. However, the point of Brad's message is that we should not be hung up on our weight but more our shape. At 69" tall, your waist ideally should be no greater than 34.5". Reach that goal and you should be at your ideal weight.
You forgot to mention the main point of BMI: it is based on statistics. People with a BMI above 25 STATISTICALLY has more chances of health diseases than people with BMI of between 19 and 25. The statistics have been done for athletes and regular people. Is not a subjective thing. It is statistics. Even for athletic people, those with 25+ still get sick more often than those with less than 25.
I thing the BMI is off. I'm atheletic at 6'0 and I weigh 200 but according to BMI I'm overweight. And I think it should be different for men and women, just like body fat percentage.
i have a 26 bmi. im 6'3 275... i dnt know waht to think. im big and strong and suprisingly agile. but i have a slight gut and huge legs. u can see my abs through my fat and i never work out, just play alot of sports. im 18. i took the bmi handheld thing at school and im stronger than most, if not all of my friends and they all lift weights and i dnt.... why am i this way?
oh men im overweight.. I weigh 160 and im 5'5.. This is so true... I had to cut back on sodas.. And sweetss. My average weight should be 125lbs..i guess,,
BMI is bullshit. It said Linford Christie was obese, hell I just did mine and it said I'm obese - yeah I am overweight, but not obese. Hell I can run a mile in 10 minutes, I do not consider myself obese. People get rejected for jobs in the military and police force based on this piece of shit, the government should stop using it.
im 5'1 98lbs my waist is 25.5 inches my hips are 31 inches my shoe size is 8 1/2 but i eat alot and i get bloated easily.... the least ive been is 95lbs ... except when i was 13 i was 83lbs...but im 16... i think i could diet a little bit ... i dont even have a butt and i have celluite...eww gross... yuck... i wanna be 88lbs exactly... but how much would i have to walk for a day? i dont wanna be 88lbs in a day just to be 88lbs in a week... today i walked for 3 hours... so far nothing happened
but not everyones the same for instance me im only 14 190 lb and im not even fat i cut from 210 to 190 and looking at my family is between 240 and 300 but are like 6'5 to 6'7 is that a whole different bmi? or a above average bmI?
personally i believe that the whole idea of BMI is so unbelievably flawed, i weigh 15 stone and am 5'11 but i am perfectly fit and healthy and have a lot of muscle on my bones. this system is actually so flawed its crazy but your system is much better
BMI is useful depending on how you use it... if your looking to lose or gain weight for example, but you should not aim for a particular BMI, BMI is a very bad indicator of health IMO.
Actually BMI is quite a good indicator of health, because those who are within their BMI range tend to live longer, even if they have eaten shitty foods their whole lives.
ya, i'm 72 inches tall and weigh 167, but i workout about 3 times a week if i can ;). my waist is 33, but my calculated bmi is 22. 6. i still need to do more cardio though, lol
Good video. The BMI scale is pretty useless for children, adults over about 5'8", or muscular adults. It's really sad that life insurance and health insurance companies are still using BMI to figure rates.
@KIFulgore Dude, why would they want to use anything else? Either way, insurance companies are out to fuck the general public. It's about money not honor or caring for others. The U.S. is all about it's money and keeping the classic greed river flowing.
is there anything that can give a correct reading? what about those expensive Tantia scales you can buy for your bathroom or is it a waste of time. My BMI is 25.3 - the same as a month ago and i cycle 10 miles a day, box 2 times a week (hardcore sessions) and 3 days at the gym light'ish weights and swimming and i see not alot of change. changed my diet to low fats but i see little change. could it be because i'm chunky solid in the legs and shoulder department?
While it is true that a body builder tend to have higher bmi than the average person, it is still quite an accurate way to measure the general well being of a population. So we should not dismiss it as outdated.
yeah BMI is outdated... According to BMI I'm at 25-25.8 which is overweight, but I am no fatter than I have been 2 years ago when I weighed 20-30 lbs less than I do now, Weight lifting with proper diet provided me with extra lean mass, I have doubled my strength and feeling healthier and better than I've ever have in my life.
BMI is total bs when i was in shape i was 6'2" and 190 pounds and in awesome shape, now im not working or doing sports im the same height and only 160 pounds and totally out of shape i almost feel fat but yet ive lost about 30 pounds, have no energy and have more of a gut, this calculation is no good
Im an eighteen year old girl, my bmi is 18.12 and i've been told different things by different people. some say it's fine and healthy, others say this is too low. My doctor has said i am underweight, but everywhere that i look on the internet says this is normal! I don't want to put on more weight to please my doctor if im only going to be making myself unhealthy.
It's not just your weight that determines if your body is in good healthy shape. First of all some fat is necessary, otherwise female will stop having period if the body fat is too low. And the right amount of fat looks good on women! If you exercise and eat healthy you are bound to weigh a bit more because you will have more muscle mass and muscle is heavier than fat. More muscle mass does not mean you will look bulky you can be strong with toned body and lots of stamina and still look slim!
This is actually true, BMI calculations are not accurate, if you are 5'10" and 185lbs and male, you are considered overweight by this measure, but realistically I have met a lot of people with that kind of stats and they are not fat, bmi does not take into account muscle mass and waist and hip size.
@lobreiter yea my brother is 5'7 215 solid muscle and the BMI gave him like 30%. its a joke. i myself have taken the electricity surge BMI test and found it more accurate i'm 5'10 155 with 8% body fat
Its the most inaccurate weight measurement system known, i am 18 stone of muscle and yet i cant join the forces because of this shit? i am stronger and fitter then most recruits its absolutely shit.
I can't believe people still use this like it has any accuracy in historical terms this might be akin to throwing a rock at your target when with today's technology you could use a sniper rifle.
The BMI was outdated when it was invented and the moment someone decided:
Age dosen't matter, humans are only made of fat or 'not fat' and men and women are the exactly the same.
Want to know if you have healthy body fat? (NOT WEIGHT)
Yes. this is a bad way of determinating your ideal body weight. I am diabetic too, so it's very common for diabetics to be obese or overweight. If you looked at me, you couldn't tell that I'm either obese or overweight. I have seen people who are DEFINATELY obese, just by looking at them. I mean obese to, means being 50 or more pounds overweight. I still want to lose about 45 pounds, but won't be easy for me.
bmi is bullshit

BMI is absolute BS, my brother in the law is a corporal in the army and is incredibly fit and lean and weighs around 230 lbs and is 5ft 10, which means he is obese (which is so far from the truth).
I could do with losing weight, but according this calculator I need to lose 100 lbs to be a healthy weight. With this information I spoke to my doctor who said I needed to lose weight but 100 lbs would be far too drastic for a man of man natural size and that the bmi calculator doesnt not count muscle
TheHasselBoff 1 year ago

These athletes are the fittest people you'll know
BMI = Badly Measured Index
seansmith000 1 year ago
your new method also doesnt make sense, since pear-shaped people or people with wide hips will be overweight when they arent.
the ONLY accurate method is measuring fat percentage. i don't see why this isn't being done, since it is very easy to measure by a professional.

monkeydomonkey 1 year ago
I can barely get down to the top range of BMI for my height (6 feet) before my percent body fat becomes unhealthily low. Why? Because I exercise, run, and lift weights. BMI is calibrated for scrawny individuals who can both LOOK and BE obese in terms of a high percent body fat. Its a broken system, and useful only for mcdonalds eating coke swilling couch potatoes who's only weight loss comes from crash fad diets and muscle loss. BMI is up there with a dwarf in the stomach causing tummy ache
michael38921 1 year ago
@michael38921 There's nothing wrong with BMI as an average over a population, but it seems the categories are really strict - i.e. I'm 5'5 160 lbs, have a little puppy fat and I'm all of a sudden overweight. Do I have to have no stomach fat whatsoever to be 'normal?' My parents probably have a BMI closer to 30 (or high 20s) and they don't have any health problems/high blood pressure/diabetes. Mind you I have big leg muscles so the average joe would probably be fatter for their weight and height

DEXA is the most accurate way to determine weather or not your are overweight because it takes into account your lean mass.
Gabbo2010 1 year ago
Hello Brad, I'm not 100% agree with your ratio of height per waist because you can be lean and have some stubborn fat on waist and then the ratio became wrong

According to BMI I am morbidly obese I am 5-7" and 230 lbs so my bmi is around 38. The waist measurments work best if you are fairly tall. If you are shorter than average it will start to deviate. If you follow it strictly if someone is 80" tall they can have a 40" waist and still weigh 230 lbs. Yet if they are 60" tall and they weigh 230 their waist has to be less than 30".

Agreed. I fall into the "extremely lean" category re BF%, but I'm almost obese as far as BMI is concerned.
gargantuandick 1 year ago
@evb4mvp well obviously u know that so why wud even want to worry about that, its for the 'average' looking people that dont work out for extreme sports or something, or people that are just fat.
VinzorBE 1 year ago

BMI is useful depending on how you use it... if your looking to lose or gain weight for example, but you should not aim for a particular BMI, BMI is a very bad indicator of health IMO.
MissMysterics 2 years ago
Actually BMI is quite a good indicator of health, because those who are within their BMI range tend to live longer, even if they have eaten shitty foods their whole lives.
intermediatespecies 2 years ago
In contrast to someone who is otherwise healthy, just happens to eat too much?
I doubt becuase they'd be pretty much starving themselves.
I was however reffering mostly to the fact muscle is heavier than fat, that alone mkes BMI pretty much redundant.

Muscles can also weight some, that's the problem with BMI, because muscles weights more than fat
innmate1414 2 years ago 2
The bmi calculator doesn't take your body fat% or muscle% into account, so it's not perfect. My bmi is 17 (too low!) but I feel/look ok.
st1tch3s 2 years ago
While it is true that a body builder tend to have higher bmi than the average person, it is still quite an accurate way to measure the general well being of a population. So we should not dismiss it as outdated.
TriasTheBetrayer 2 years ago
yeah BMI is outdated...

ForeverDelayed1 2 years ago

Gabbo2010 1 year ago

I can't believe people still use this like it has any accuracy in historical terms this might be akin to throwing a rock at your target when with today's technology you could use a sniper rifle.
The BMI was outdated when it was invented and the moment someone decided:
Age dosen't matter, humans are only made of fat or 'not fat' and men and women are the exactly the same.
Want to know if you have healthy body fat? (NOT WEIGHT)
Ask your doctor.

rich187113 3 years ago
I can't believe its still used as an accurate figure for determining health.
BMI DOESN'T:
1) differentiate between Males and Females. A man is obviously heavier than a woman.
2) differentiate between Muscle Mass and Fat Mass. Muscle is denser than Fat.
3) take into account your age:
Elderly: Muscle and Bone wastage. Could have unhealthy fat amounts and your BMI could be fine.
etc...
Your measurement has some major holes... but its quick and easy. Body Fat % is the only real measurement.
1234ilovemarinecore 3 years ago
Yes. this is a bad way of determinating your ideal body weight.
