  • The Who was the best rock band of all time.

  • I bet the satilite going out was a prank by Keith Moon from beond the grave

  • if you ever really need to see the who live nowadays just watch the concert for new york........they smashed it........

  • Having seen all the worlds elite rock bands on multiple occasions Lynyrd Skynyrd are the best live (original group) closely followed by The who but like everything else it's just someone's opinion. You might think Cliff Richard is.

  • it was a set up

  • 90 seconds of John being fussy about his bass.....get on with it lads!

  • @mmmbilly clearly he had an earth issue the amp was buzzin like hell

  • The DVD is a must for music fans.

  • (why don't you all fade away) lol then The Who actually fade away!

  • Awesome! Great Live Band!

  • hey thanks for postin! what a tease!!

  • 0:00 - 1:45 crap

  • I really like the Who, but they kind of fell flat on their faces at Live Aid :/

  • @ubercreep You're a fucking tool, do humanity a favor and try breathing under water.

  • I always thought they cut it because someone at the Beeb was afraid he was going to say 'Fuck 'Off'

  • Why don't you all f-f...

    ...

    ...

    ...and?

  • @ledfuckenzeppelin

Yeah, but you have to remember that Jones, Page & Plant hadn't played together since 1980 and Live Aid was the first time they had played as "Led Zeppelin" with anyone other than Bonham on drums except during soundcheck at Knebworth with Jason in '79.

  • im born in the wrong age :c

  • I can't imagine rock music without The Who but I can imagine rock music without Led Zeppelin and Queen.

  • @vandergraaf78 hey! queen and led zeppelin rock! and especially led zeppelin had enormous influence on the heavy metal aesthetic and the mysticism of it all. that's not fair to say that. (not that the who aren't better.)

  • @vandergraaf78 You csnt' rock music WITHOUT Led Zeppelin and Queen? Ahahaha. You are simply mad.

  • Next to My generation they played Pinball wizard, then the broadcast started again with Love reign o'er me.

  • can we please stop talking about justin bieber and lady gaga

there should not be on a video with real music

  • OMG. I remember that. The Who blowing the Wembley fuses.

  • Comment removed

  • is the audience saying bull shit XD

  • NO! what happened.....why did it g quiet :(

  • @1993DaVinci One of the fuses at Wembley blew and it cut off the video stream

  • imagine waiting that long in front of millions of people!!!

  • As a fan of The Who for the best part of 40 yrs, this must be one of their poorest performances. I can still feel my disappointment when watching this..... remember no Youtube, DVDs back in 1985 and TV performances like this were really savoured.

For a good laugh watch the official video of 'Eminence Front' as well, and cringe with embarrasment with Pete and Roger dressed up in the worst Duran Duran outfits you have ever seen!!

  • @t0mme1981 ha! watch the zep reunion its just as bad

  • No Entwhistle Bass Solo :( That sucks the most cuz that's the best part of the song!

  • this was the end of entwistle´s longe time friendship with alembic ))

  • I heard that john had some problems with his bass during this performance. Which song did this happen in?

  • At 1.06 you it looks like Pete turns to Roger to say F*cK**g Hell, cause they are waiting so long for to get started! lol

  • While I had heard/read about the accidentally breakdown in TV transmission during The Who's performance of MG, I hadn't until now actually seen "exactly" what the TV viewers saw during the moments straight after.

    Thanks for posting this!

  • "25 yrs ago, w/in spitting distance of this stadium, four young men formed a band to speak for their Generation, they eventually spoke for Two, now they sing to save a third, Please Welcome- The Who!" was how The Who were Introduced @ Wembley 25 yrs ago Today.

  • Gotta love the crowd chanting "bullshit" at the end of the video due to the who's performance getting cut off.

  • I remember it well. Was really looking forward to The Who and it ended up with "Why dontya all........chhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh".

Some brilliant tracks played that day though. I still reckon it ranks alongside Woodstock.

    Thanks Bob.....

    :o)

  • isn't there any blonds there? audience looks pretty brown

  • The rocking'est version of this song ever. It only came unplugged in the States, right? Anyone got the full length? I'm looking at you 'Brit's.

  • OMG He looks just like David Hasselhoff LOL lmao :D

  • I believe it was said once that what actually happened was that all the satellite facilities and everything put such a strain on Wembley Stadium that they literally blew the fusebox. So the power actually got shut down, while they fixed that problem. I think one of the BBC tech guys said that they literally had to change a fuse and it was the largest fuse he'd ever seen in his life, the size of an hour glass or something. Also, did anyone notice Entwistle tuning up DURING the song?

  • you say pop- i say shut the fuk up

you say rihanna - i say deep purple

you say hip-hop - i say three days grace

you say emenem - i say led zepellin

you say hanna montana - i scream rock' n roll

92% of teenagers have turned to hip-hop and pop, if ur part of the 8%, copy this message and paste it to an other video. DONT LET THE SPIRIT OF ROCK DIE!!!!

  • pretty average performance for daltrey.

  • this aint on the CD that sucks

  • @MrGnr90

fuck your cds. live performances is the real music kid

  • @MrGnr90 Signal path was Wembley BBC OB scanner -> Telecom Tower -> Uplink to Philly -> Combine -> Uplink to UK -> Telecom Tower -> BBC Television Centre. Only then was it being recorded to VT and transmitted.

    Generator went bang in Wembley.

  • @MrGnr90 what cd

  • live feed interruption is a BUZZKILL!

  • The Who blew away Zeppelin live ..Zeppelin was terrible live but had amazing studio albums

  • @kingphenonmenal Dude The Who was voted the Graetest live band EVGER They were know for there live acts go buy Live At leeds man .. best live album ever this performance is gasrbage compared to there 70's live stuff with Moon .. I love both But The Who takes Zeppelin Live my opinion and many others and Journalists and please dont insult me

  • @cjf799 Live at leeds is amazing but I think that Isle of white festival 1970 is fairly underated, I personally think that The isle of wight 1970 was just as good but then Ive got both so yeah!

  • @cookienuts3 Also broke Loudest band in The World Record until Manowar broke it Twice

  • @cookienuts3 , it's a different sort of thing. Leeds was the Who playing to a polite audience. Isle of Wight was 500,000 hippie druggie stoners, and Pete got utterly PISSED playing to those huge festival crowds. So you get Enjoying Himself Pete and Wants to Kill the Audience Pete. Two different aspects of Live Whodom. Both being amazing. I don't think there was a band before or since that could top live Leeds-era Who.

  • @cjf799 The Who, The best live band I have ever seen.

  • @cjf799 Where can I read that the Who is the best live band ever? Just like these list of 100 Greatest etc. they don t make sense. The Who were a good live band, but by no means the "best"

  • true

  • saw them both live, both overrated imho

  • Hey, all of you... GET A LIFE!!

  • The Who may be playing half time at the Super Bowl!

  • The NY Post suggests it's a done deal. Keith and John will be there in spirit no doubt. Emotionally, how does any nation top the NYC firefighters and policemen singing to Roger and Pete at the Kennedy Center on national TV? This promises to be more about fun and spectacle. And even without rehearsal the touring band could blow away musically almost all the previous acts -- although Prince was stunning by any measure. Hope The Who push the edge and take risks rather than play Macca/RS bland

  • I saw The Who at the now extinct Corn Exchange, Chelmsford in 1966.

  • You are an evil and ignorant human being. Maybe we white folks should start fixing all the messes we made, like the state of Africa today. We white folks colonized and destroyed the lives of the africans living in all the spots we thought were pretty or had shiny crap we wanted. Screw you, you small minded bigot.

  • lol "Bull-shit!, bull-shit!"

  • I sat through the entire thing waiting for The Who and when the satelite feed cut out I was furious. I was so excited to see them because they had broken up.

  • They sound good considering they hadn't played for a few years. :)

  • I dont know if anyone noticed but the organ started playing in it and Pete went somewhere on the stage and obviously unplugged it. LMAO. I can understand it.

  • at least we know there not fake, unlike the likes of lady gaga n all them hoo just mime

  • @jakgeezer i saw lady gaga live, she doesnt mime and is suprisingly instrumental live

  • @fatcatsarefun : did anyone really give a flying fuck ??

  • @jakgeezer are you kidding me? i went to lady gagas concert, it was not fake anywhere... if you know music you know she sings better than the most of the singers today, trust me..idiot

  • @apakomu lady gaga is a tranny

  • @apakomu she is shite any1 with a musical note in their head knows that its all autotone with her just like the rest of this generation excluding the real talent

  • @apakomu are you kidding me? I WAS THERE, i heard that she can sing, haha if you would meet her and shw would sing to you you wouldnt have anythin to say omg

  • @jakgeezer implying lady gaga mimes

  • @jakgeezer lady gaga dosent mime, but yes ovcourse actually playing live is a very creditable part of being a live act

  • @jakgeezer I wish people would stop name checking Lady Gaga in their comments. i have nothing against the guy but it`s just predictable

  • @jakgeezer Oh my God did you really just write 'hoo'?

  • @jakgeezer Have you actually ever watched a live Lady Gaga performance? Most likely not. Go watch a real one and open your ears. You should be able to tell the difference between a pre-recording and real voice.

This is not an attack on The Who, I love them and think they are amazing. I however hate such ignorance when it comes to music and will tell people when they are idiots, and you sir, are an idiot.

  • q video choto.

  • talk about gettin boned! dam

  • "Why doncha all FFF~"

    haha that was epic

  • IMHO, The Who was/is second to only Queen live....overall, i would say The Who were better though....

    i fucking LOVE both.

    RIP Freddi, John, and Kieth...

  • Well, if this was before Keith died, Queen would be second. The Who had it rough during the eighties.

  • agreed. didn't they technically retire in 82??

  • Well, that was anticlimactic as hell.

  • queeen put on the best set by far for liveaid and who cares if they were still together or not the who didn't perform nearly as well as queen malfunctions or not...the who isn definately not the best live band of all time anyways

  • i agree Queen was the best second to no one

  • The Who stole Monterey in 67, Woodstock in 69 and Isle of Wight in 70. Where were Queen then eh? They even stole concert for new york in 2001. With Moon they would have desimated Queen (or anybody else).

  • Totally agreed! very good point!

  • 1:10: The poles of Entwistle's backup battery were swiched and his main Alembic came up dead. The delay is him and his techs getting the backup bass out and set up. You can hear him tuning up during the opening of My Generation. He later pointed to this as the moment he swore off Alembics.

  • wow 0:54!

  • Who in youre opinion is the best live band ever.

  • The Who greatest live band ever

  • Led Zep is not known for their live performances. They are known for their studio albums. Live they dont cut it. Want proof? look at any live Zep vid and any Who video. The Who destroys. The Who released Live At Leeds uncut, not polished, and released in its entirety. Considered the greatest live album of all time. Led Zep will take the best live cut from various years and various tours and edit them and redub and fix them up and release the album after years of touching up those songs.

  • Very wrong. Listen to early bootlegs and early performances such as Royal Albert Hall and they are pretty much the best thing I've ever seen and heard by miles. I agree that towards the end of the 70's they pretty much sucked much due to Page's drug abuse.

  • are you denying that Page takes the best songs from the best tours, from the best years and takes a couple of years to fix them up and then releases a "live album"? The Who did no such thing. I will put any live Who material against any live Zep material anyday. Lets start with Live At Leeds, BAM OUT OF THE PARK!

  • I submit to you bands like Rush and The Who are known for their live performances and dont need to spend years cleaning up what should be normal live material. Led Zep is a great studio band and probably the most popular band. They dominated the 70's. Guess you never have seen The Who especially back in the day or Rush.

  • Well said. 1970s Who are the greatest live band to walk the planet. Saw them. The sheer power, melodic flair, volume and sense the whole thing could fall apart at any time - the very definition of 'abandonment.' Townshend on the vids only hints at the staggering performance. Zepp were loud and self indulgent (Page and even Bonham) - even Zepp's current manager who did 02 said they could never touch The Who live. Bruce in late 70s/80s and U2 had some spiritual uplift but still not close.

  • Well written and you are spot on, cheers

  • your kidding right? led zeppelin was one of the greatest live bands of the 70s, superior to the who in every way, i love the who dude, they are amazing, but no way can they beat zeppelin live, bohnams better drummer(which is saying something, moon is number 2 to bohnam in my list), jimmy page is a better guitar player than townshend and plant is a better frontman than roger, the who kick ass, major ass, but no way they are better than zeppelin

  • Plant is a great singer and so is Daltrey. But Daltrey is a better frontman, probably the best. Daltrey acts like a man and Plant acts like a woman who wears little girls shirts ( See Song Remains The Same). Daltrey moves around the stage while Plant stands there in one spot, see SRS again. Nobody can snap their fingers with their palms in the air while screaming ooo baaaby better than Plant see SRS again.

  • haha agreed, i call it sex appeal, its rock and roll :D plant owns, i think that led zeppelin is just way cooler than the who

  • Page may be a better guitarist than Townshend even Pete has said so but Pete on stage is a way better showman than Page. So Pete is better on stage as is Moonie as is Daltrey as is John Entwistle. So how can Led Zep be better on stage than The mighty Who? LOL The Who are known for live performances, again listen to Live At Leeds, 1 album, 1 show, untouched. Listen to live Zep many shows, many tours, many years, remixed over a period of years, LOL too funny man

  • at least PAGE DOESNT LOOK AT CHILD PORN

  • LOL Pete was not charged with anything. Bad example. Pete has given millions of dollars in support of child abuse way before his incident. Besides all who know Pete said he is not a pedi and even the police said so. No charges, no convictions. So why bring up something like that? For someone who loves The Who you certainly are critical. I laid out a good case of why The Who are better than Zep on stage and you come back with that. Your comment does not take away from The mighty Who.

  • dude im kidding i love the who, but the facts you laid out in front of me are all your opinions, i didnt see the who get 20,000,000 hits for tickets when they decided to go on tour... why? people want to see the legendary led zeppelin live

  • read my past post, I stated Led Zep is probably the most popular band. I dont disagree with you there. The Beatles were the band of the 60's. Led Zep band of the 70's. Michael Jackson entertainer 80. Garth Brookes entertainer 90. Beatles most successful and influential. Stones deserve title greatest rock n roll band(although I think The Who). Greatest live band goes to The Who. Led Zep is the most popular and Nirvana most overrated. Biggest dickhead Kurt Cobain, he lied he had a gun

  • why would u bring nirvana into this they were great

  • because anyone who would say Led Zep is the greatest live band must like the pathetic overrated Nirvana! LOL

  • who the fuck os garth brookes???

    nirvana are the 90s dickhead!!

  • so your so called "facts" are not opinions? you stated Led Zep is the greatest without any comparison. I laid out a comparison and stated why.

  • Yea but led zep are shit live. Good songs on the albums thouogh.

  • they are both super good live, they are both epic rock acts and if i had to choose my favorite i couldnt, they are both amazing

  • @cookienuts3 coulnt agree more

  • @cjf799 cheers

  • @Xanth016 The Who sold 180,000 tickets for 3 shows at shea 82 minus Moon in 12 minutes

  • how do you know he doesnt?

  • I will not debate the technical ability of Moonie vs Bonzo but will say this, Moonie was the classic rock n roller who lived that life style and was a way better showman on stage than Bonzo. Moonie was exciting. Pete Townshend is the best all around singer/songwriter/producer/musician/showman, only Paul McCartney comes close. Townshend can play ANY instrument. You didnt mention John Entwistle (BASSIST OF THE MILLENIUM). VS JPJ.

  • haha i love the who dude, they are brilliant, i just prefer led zeppelin, i love how bonzo beats the shit out of the drums and jimmy uses the bow, and jp how epic their songs are, same with the who, i love the who, but if i could see any band live, itd be zeppelin :D

  • @MrTrajan69 but stfuuuuu and listen bootleg man, there is so many show zep's show better than Live at leeds srys...

  • @AZEIDJSKSQMM The Who literally dominated Woodstock

  • @iamobeliskquake WOW it's incrdible !

  • It takes Page years to fix up the live slop that Led Zep put out. They never released an album of ONE LIVE SHOW. The Who records most of their shows and you can purchase the live show unpolished and the money goes to charity. The Who has great live CD's out. A pity Page has to work years to decide which songs to put out and then when he is done they are not that great even after cleaning them up, lol.

  • This is without Keith Moon and them not having played together in 3 years. Give them a break

  • Are you fucking kidding me? No practice, big crowd, hating each other's guts, death of a prized Alembic, and still they rock. No other band could pull off as masterful a set as the Who at Live Aid.

  • "No other band could pull off as masterful a set as the Who at Live Aid."

Eh... there's something called Queen. I don't know if you've heard of it.

  • Queen put on a good set, but they were still very much an active band at the time. The Who were not.

Plus there's a little something called "hyperbole." Look it up if you're not aware. :-)

  • That's too many fucking people for one concert stage. Probably sounded like shit out there in the nosebleeds.

  • just out of questions what is the nosebleeds

  • The audience seats at the far end of the stadium or up high so that you can't even see the band on the stage.

  • Great song....try the other Who songs at this concert - they ROCK!

  • John's bass is terribly out of tune at the begining. He's taking that long to "get it together" that Pete just starts the song before John's tuned up.

  • This was his backup bass. The main bass had some elctronics issues and went dead. He had to run to the roadies to get the backup.

  • That's correct.

  • Man, no one gets more people at a performance than The Who!

  • Lol?

  • its a shame this broadcasting glitch happened during the who's set and not adam ant's or the style council's or something

  • It's funny to see one of John Entwhistle's custom Alembic basses malfunctioning at the beginning of the show. Good thing he brought a spare.

  • He changed the battery of his main bass backstage, and while doing that, he crossed a few of the wires. And his spare bass was tuned in D, and they didn't had a damn transformator for the 5-pin jacket..

  • I was 8 years old and I got to watch the whole show with my Dad. He recorded it so we could watch it again and it became one of my bros and sisters favorite tapes to watch and yes it sucked when this happened, cause this is what we were waiting to see. Never the less live aid was one of the best t.v. broadcast that happened when I was a kid. It was something you didnt forget seeing, and Im happy to see it posted for thoses of you that missed out.

  • I'm not being mean in any way, but I've always found it funny when the feed swaps back to Philly and the entire 100,000 crowd is chanting "Bullshit! Bullshit!"

As someone says below, it's a real shame that the Who of all people had to suffer this technical failure.

  • thanks a ton

  • Great upload-love the Who-never saw them at

LiveAid until now. THanks for posting it. Daltry does an AMAZING job-those are NOT easy songs to sing. Rock on!

  • That was a World Wide Broadcast that went from 8 am to midnight in two locations - London and Philadelphia.

Sucked that The Who paid the price.

There is a ton of music from this day and gives a look at the past, the future and some acts that you wonder WTF!

    Go to U2.

  • che tristezza

  • well that broadcast sucks.

  • I love all the technical problems John had with his basses. He sold one of them to Hard Rock Cafe as it's "punishment" for not staying in tune after this.

  • are you kidding? WOW! That is so like John!R.I.P.

  • is kenney jones playing drums here?

  • yes

but he's such a fruit...at least compared to Moonie...Starkey is a beast (still not Keith), but Jones is just too conserved for The Who, ya know?

  • he was good in the small faces and the law band though.

i suppose moonie wouldnt have been right for those 2 bands

  • definately

    Jones is an excellent drummer

but he fits way better with the small faces

yeah uh...Moonie with the faces? hahahahah

at one point he actually went up to Paul McCartney wanting to replace Ringo

THAT would be like some kind of insane fusion

  • i never rated ringo next to the best drummers e.g. purt bonham moonie

  • He always was! He was there session drummer and even at time played live when Moon was to fucked up to play! Pete even one time, after Moon passed out behind his kit, grabbed some guy in the audience to play! The guy was only able to play 2 or 3 songs the he himself was about to pass out! Ya! nobody will ever fill Moonies shoes.

  • Queen & U2 were the two best bands of the day. I was at the Philadelphia show...all 15 years old of me! Great time!

  • Queen were the best band of the day-that was backed up by most of the acts too. The Who were absolutely terrible here. GET OVER IT!

  • I thought The Who--at least Love Reign O'er Me and Won't Get Fooled Again--were awesome! Maybe second or third best (behind Queen and possibly Bowie).

  • lol, i just got a chill when they walked out... didn't even play yet

  • So did everyone else there, too, I'm sure. They hadn't played the U.K. since 1981.

  • Thank You John Entwistle

  • if they played the song right away, it wouldnt have missed any part of the song right?

  • They would've if they could, I'm sure. But remember it was the first time anything near this size had been attempted (all the bands / equipment / satellite feeds etc). So many things that COULD have gone wrong - was just bad luck it was during The Who. No disrespect to Queen but if this problem hadn't have happened, then according to all the critics, The Who would have been THE act of the day.

  • the who werent playing playing well here. i say that again. they didnt play well here. they were amazing. thats why when you see the who on a night that they play well, your blown outta your mind, so its understandable that what you said is true

  • I think you're right. No disrespect to Queen, but I believe if that generator never exploded, The Who would have been the act of the day. Oh well, at least we've gotten more advanced with technology over the years

  • What a bummer that must have been. Loved how some of the American audience was starting to chant "bullshit" after the feed dropped out.

  • I can only imagine hundreds of millions of Who fans all over the world watching this on their TVs and going "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!"
