aaah, the master ! giving a lecture to all those violin players who consider themselves as "revolutionary" . Even Jean-Luc Ponty who plays on a high level hasn't got this power.
damn, still ripipng it! I have 'On the Future of Aviation' and ' it's alive CD's, both kick ass. A pity about JH though I would kill to see the MO again, or have Jan get doqn and jam again with Al DiMeola & co.
Goodman's sound and "edge" is unique and. to my ears, is where a lot of guitarists have tried, with varying degrees of sucess, to go. Jerry in this clip sounds like he reaches this place easily. I still hear the same Jerry as from "The Flock" days in Chicago. One of my most interesting music experiences was back in those days jamming for hours (days?) in Tom Knogl's studio near Chicago Ave and Rush St. What a rush! Any Chicago folks know where Tom is these days? - Jack in San Diego
Wow, his playing is increadible! Some of the shreddy phrasing reminds me of Shawn Lane, or Rusty Cooley. As a guitarist, i find violin players really inspireing, and this dudes just opend my eyes even wider!
GREAT VIDEO...Please Mr. Goodman, talk to your former Mahavishnu colleagues and reunite the original Mahavishnu, the world would love to see REAL musicians and REAL quality music.
Unfortunately, something happened to cause a serious falling out between Jerry and John McGlauphlin. Even JM doesn't know the reason, even after all these years (or so he says). What I wouldn't give to sit down with them and say something like "..C'mon' guys, give it a break! you're too good to let old issues get in the way of this kind of creativity...after all this time, wounds can heal. Do this for OUR sake..."
Thanks for the answer. The only thing I had read about this was an article I read, included in Crawdaddy Magazine, maybe from 1973 in which the band sort of criticized McLaughlin´s domination on the band´s composition process. Maybe they still are angry about that article, but people can hold a grudge for many years. Hope we can see them together someday.
Damn, that´s bad...well, at least we will keep hoping for them to "see the light"...who knows, if Return To Forever played again, hopefully they can. I saw the video again, and every time I watch it I feel more amazed, Goodman only gets better with age. What a way to play the violin.
I don't think the problem was with Jerry Goodman . In a number of interviews John McLaughlin has said he once organised a re union concert with the members of 1st Mahavishnu Orchestra . He said everyone agreed except Jan Hammer.
I use to see Jerry perform with his great ensemble the Flock many times and musically and performance-wise stole the show many times rivalling at the time even Jimi! I miss these type of rock perfomances and Jerry you will always be my favorite living virtuoso of strings! Paganini is smiling and waiting for that jam with you soon. All serious musicians from all genres should watch this and collect all this man's works!
Killer tone !!! Amazing playing too !!

From the Flock to Mahavishnu to the Dreggs. Sugar Cain Harris is another fine violin player.

He does just get better doesn't he. Still the same style shinning thru as always but every year it's clearer, smoother, better.

I read an interview that said Goodman was cool with Johnny Mac now, but Jan Hammer still has his panties in a twist.

I first saw Jerry with Mahavishnu in summer 1971 at the Akron Rubber Bowl (Ohio). I have been a student of his works ever since. Bravo Jerry!
