I've trained at his school on Wilshire and have seen both him and Kron roll. It's easy to be enamored by Rickson's presence alone, but to be quite frank, I don't think Rickson is the best BJJ artist of all time. I watch Marcelo Garcia and am astonished by his technical ability and believe him to be the best P4P. In my opinion, Roger is better than Rickson was in his prime and the best BJJ artist the Gracie family has produced; however, Kron could potentially surpass Roger P4P.

If you watch Sakuraba, Barnett, Tamura,Daisuke Nakamura, Funaki, Kitaoka, etc... you can see a clear difference between them and your classic BJJ players. This is especially the case with a younger/prime Sakuraba before he went to Chute Boxe. Go watch his early fights, even against the Gracies, and tell me his style resembles BJJ.

@sharkfinnigan No, it's not all BJJ, JJJ, and Judo. Sakuraba is a Catch Wrestler with a long freestyle wrestling career. He placed top 5 in Japan when he wrestled as an amateur in college. It's quite obvious that his main style is a form of wrestling, not BJJ. Sure, now he's had BJJ training. But for most of his career? He was a pure wrestler with Pro-Wrestling influence.

Ralek destroyed him? Ralek beat a 41 year old man who is so broken down he can barely walk. Hardly something to brag about.

The old NHB or the street, Rickson would have killed these guys, for sure. Now, I would have loved to see Wade Schalles and Rickson, or maybe Karl Gotch and Rickson. The old timers would have been an issue for any of today's fighters. That's a fact. The old Carny Wrestlers were hell!

A few years ago a multiple time BJJ World Champion and ADCC Champion who I will not name went to spar with Rickson just after winning Worlds. Rickson tapped him a number of times including a choke from Side Control from body pressure alone.

Marcelo is incredible but no way he 'would have tooled' Rickson. I'm not so sure Marcelo would win still today.

Ill name one adcc top contendor he played with-Andre galvao. He says it himself. Rickson allowed him to mount him and escaped and in Galvao's own words 'mopped the floor' with him. While other adcc guys may be a bit better than Galvao no one tools him like rickson did. I have also seen the only people who criticize rickson are average bjj practitioners who never trained with him. world class blackbelts who have rolled with him, all praise him like no one does.

But yes, many top gi champions including Paulo Filho and Andre Galvao have gone up against Rickson and gt dominated. From my former black belt national champion instructor, he said that he once saw Rickson grapple over 15 black belts consecutively and easily dominated them all without taking a sip of water and did not breath hard. I think Marcelo would win in no gi though.

Sakuraba was awesome but I doubt he would have beaten Rickson. Nobuhiko Takada was one of Saks teachers and training partners who use to tap him on the regular. Rickson submitted Takada by armbar twice in Pride. I know that just because Rickson beat Takada who tapped Sakuraba in training doesn't prove Rickson would have won but in my world it does :)
