Maria Callas was indeed in a class by herself, the thrills and passions she brought with every aria cannot ever be forgotten, even with a sporadic flat note she sang, just overshadowed by the enormous talent she was. With all the great sopranos, past and present, will there ever be a other Divina Maria Callas. I hope so.
This is from the Paris recording of Tosca with Callas/Bergonzi/Gobbi. This aria is spectacular. Callas had an even better recording of Tosca some eleven years earlier. She is considerably better in the La Scala Tosca with Gobbi and Di Stefano.
Since she's a studio soprano I can't say how good she is until somebody takes the fucking microphone and speakers out and put her to sing freely on opera stages to cary out the whole entire opera from A-Z in front of public like others sopranos and then let's give her a qualifiction of how good she is!
@alexliliryan She's not just a studio soprano though. She's been on many opera stages around the world and performed many concerts before she passed. Just an fyi
@Yodaddy1988457 If I upset anyone with my remarks about Maria Callas I really apologize, she indeed was a terrific sopranos which she can't be ever replace, and positively not by Angela Gheorghiu which not supposed to challange Maria Callas with that idiotic CD called "Homage to Maria" in which I did not discover no Homage whatsoever brought to Maria Callas ingenuity by Romanian fake sopranos. @alexliliryan - Of whom do you speak? Do you know absolutely nothing of Maria Callas? Such a strong opinion to be completely incorrect. Please, just google her name. Unless, of course, you were referring to someone else?
This just brings tear to my eyes. 'Cos it feels warm in my heart and the pure joiness of great music, lyrics and supreme singer. If I had the chance, I want to marry her..
To me, singing is an art, especially operatic singing. Therefore this kind of singing is not just the voice but also needs the soul in the singing. Maria Callas was singing with her soul, that is why she was able to connect and to touch so many people in so many generations. Her earlier younger voice in the early 50's was the prime time of her voice.it was beautiful, skillful, powerful and heart felted. people should listen to that first before making any comments.
This is hauntingly beautiful. Her voice is perfectly crafted. She is a blessing. May you rest in peace, Maria. You will remain an unforgotten legend forever. We love you.
As a mezzo Grace Bumbry is great in that aria but she must do a lot of effort and seems to be at her limits. So the interpretation is too strong and perhaps you like more dramatic interpretation. Nevertheless, Callas, at least at this aria, is far the best in all times.
@ronfast The opera world still talks about Maria 50 years after many of her recorded works were made. They will talk about her 100 years from now. Grace who? Case closed
@ronfast What a foolish reply. Callas is legend and will be discussed 100 years from now, Bumbrey will not. Does that make their relative status in the opera world a little more clear for you! Stupido!
@voizovrsn Why should I get my nose out of joint? Obviously, you did not understand what I mean. If were in your shoes, I would have written "I think", "IMO" prior to the most definite statement "no better rendition has been done". That's all.
The BBC declared Callas, " The Greatest Soprano Of All Time ", in 2007. The Times UK, when ranking the top 20 living sopranos, stated that the basis of measurement is DaVina Callas!! No matter how good a living soprano is, they are only as good as they are amongst each other, as compared to Callas. The Times UK, made it very clear that Callas was untouchable.
NO...es una voz árida...las opiniones creo que se deben más a la fama que le crearon las revistas de chisme que a su canto...y los agudos son cascados...muchas otras cantantes cantan esta aria mucho mejor.
I cry when I hear this. If greatness in Opera were measured by how many times an artist can make the listener cry and stir up all the emotions of humanity, then Callas would be the all-time, hands-down winner. I think this aria was the medium for Callas to express the pain she felt. God give her rest.
I have listened very many singers singing "Vissi D'arte" but only Callas singing can touch my soul. she is not just got the voice, but most important she sang it with her soul. she is my singing example in all the opera arias that I learned, Thank you for posting this great aria with the great singer for us. Pearl
@pinkpearldiva Interesting to read this and indeed Callas is wonderful. With respect though do listen to Leontyne Pryce as she too is truly wonderful in this role
@pinkpearldiva I take you can sing three blind mice in your bathtub or are a total idiot? nobody who sings like this has a gone voice. you are rude and very very stupid person to make such comments, but stick with your 100 bottles of beer on the wall and mary had a little lamb... just go away. nobody needs your nastiness here. you don't have any contracts with La Scala or Met or Wiener Staatsoper to claim, so just go sing in your shower.
I've never understood all this critical crap about Callas. (How about that: "Callas critical crap"?) I have no clue what perfect Tosca is, but I don't know another version that matches this one in purity and emotion. I do like Tebaldi's power however.
Bravo "ferricheart"--you said what needed saying. Just as people were afraid to criticize her when she was alive, they continue to laud praise on the "screeching" you refer to even though she's been gone many years. And there are so many really good talents out there--Kiri, Angela and others.
@teren237 Another ignorant person. Maria was criticised all the time and she knew it. The greatest of them all will always be criticised and if you knew her she knew that she loved perfection; through art, through emotions, through the voice. That is why people learn from her. Go learn about how she sang and her life, if not just disappear into whatever you came from.
I am thinking how can it be wrong, when the version of Tosca with Maria Callas is till today unclaimed, every single version of Tosca is meassured along her version, why cause she is unique and professional in every way, regardless of if it was technique of singing, the style of playing a role. As said, what can go above perfection, pretty much nothing. And truly this version of Tosca deserves all credits, amazing.
How about Angela Gheorghiu's version? Personally i think that Callas's vibrato is to wide on the high pitch notes. Nevertheless the experience of listening to her voice is truly unique.
Can no-one see that she is the worst screecher of all opera singers. She breathes on her chest and doesn't use her diaphragm. She really isn't as good as everybody thinks, she has the typical western opera voice rather than the mellow Italian voice. I'm surprised her voice didn't run out sooner because of the way she sings on her throat, you can just hear the strain. Anyone who has been taught correctly will tell you this.
@ferricheart How dare you? She learned whole performances in a week or a few days, she is renowned and respected for everything. She has worked with the greats and she is a legend. You cannot take that away from her, no matter how pathetic your reasoning is. Her work was and is being remembered. She set the standard. If you do not like her voice, then go into a small hole where only you will be and die.
@hammer55292 Hey hammer, don't pay attention to that person man, I've seen the exact same destructive comment in another video of Mrs. Callas. I suspect it is somebody nobody loves, maybe one that spents looooots of time at the pc 'cause he/she has no friends... In my case, I simply let myself fly upon the wings of one of the manifestations of the Beauty, in this case, this music, regardeless the comments of mentally/emotionally ill persons.
@MrRodrigoOpazo I appreciate your comments. I wish I had the maturity and the mental make-up to allow these people to just post their vile comments, and not respond. Unfortunately for me, I find them so egregious, I am unable to contain my anger. Therefore, I have no alternative but to " SPAM " them as much as possible, and reply as
@Absolutamente100 Es exactamente así en español? Es conmovedor. Oh!
Simplemente gracias.
It is simply majestic. Every time he hears a chill through my body. one can never versioning of Tosca as she is unique. Wherever you are Maria thanks for making this opera just love how I love.
Thank you for having given the world your voice immortal. Just thanks.
Tosca was one of Calla's greatest roles. She did many terrific roles in opera, but if it would come to only a few they would definitely be Tosca, Meda, Norma, Lucia and Traviata. Her Tosca was passionate, very Italianate, fully lyric as well as dramatic. It was always a great performance when she sang Tosca.
Callas truly was a mezzo, and sounds 2034589134059 times better when she sings a deeper soprano role like Tosca, than when she sang Lucia or Violetta, in my opinion. She has this deep gloriously rich voice, which can't be beat in its lower register.
@shirly961 there is stupidity in different leves but, girl you reach the top! Anna doesn't even play Tosca!! you have to go out of the fantasy world where you live!
Both Callas and Dessay have shrieky and metallic high notes. However, while Callas was a great actress, Dessays acting is dismal, she is often overacting and pathetically tends to compensate for her small childish voice with buffoonish histrionics.
Harvard, I have no expertise in opera, but I agree with you, wholeheartedly. It seems as though a lot of Callas' most beautiful work, beyond human singing, was done in Paris, with Pretre conducting. There are several on Youtube
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Unfortunately? Striker, your problem is your not available intelligence. Callas was perhaps the greatest "technician" but she cannot hold the candle to Anna Netrebko if you compare the beauty of the voice. In this case Callas is not under the first 100 singers with the nicest voice. For me and my exquisite ear and millions other connoisseurs she screams like a monkey, sorry!
BElman, you stupid piece of trash. In every human endeavor there is a time when the person reaches their peak: sports, politics, strength, beauty, intelligence, etc. People at some point age, and lose their greatness, however they are forever measured at their PEAK. Callas at her peak, crushes any, and every soprano that ever lived. Unfortunately for you, that includes the lip-synching, showboating, marketed, promoted, Russian, second-rate, Popera, Anna Netrebko.
Do you know that Puccini thought that this piece stops the flow of the play?So Maria did...It's really weird 'cause I think that 'Vissi d' arte' is one of the most beautiful arias ever...
Maria Callas was indeed in a class by herself, the thrills and passions she brought with every aria cannot ever be forgotten, even with a sporadic flat note she sang, just overshadowed by the enormous talent she was. With all the great sopranos, past and present, will there ever be a other Divina Maria Callas. al ciel, che ne ridean più belli.
Nell'ora del dolore, perché,
perché Signore, perché
me ne rimuneri così?

Vissi d'arte, vissi d'amore,
non feci mai male ad anima viva!
Con man furtiva
quante miserie conobbi, aiutai...
Sempre con fe' sincera,
la mia preghiera
ai santi tabernacoli salì.
Sempre con fe' sincera
diedi fiori agli altar.

MastersoftheOpera 1 year ago
Other artists have the voice. But only Callas captured the passion and drama to perfection!
fredrick804 1 year ago
Obviously, not her strongest Vissi d'arte. But still, some wonderful colours and vocal acting.

Callas truly was a mezzo, and sounds 2034589134059 times better when she sings a deeper soprano role like Tosca, than when she sang Lucia or Violetta, in my opinion. She has this deep gloriously rich voice, which can't be beat in its lower register.
preppybeast6293 1 year ago
Sorry, but Kabaivanska owns this role. No one can compare with her masters in this aria, even Callas with all my respect.

Would you please wash your mouth before talking about Maria Callas, instead of vomiting poison over her as you do?
Simonechisena 2 years ago
Then why did you listened to it? She's singing like a god... You should read your comment and then look into the next mirror!

This is without a doubt one of the best by Callas.

This aria can only be beaten by Callas herself.

For true opera lovers and the pioneers of great music, she's a great artist.

From here I would move on to listen to the Golden Era with Callas and some of the earlier stuff in Opera.

What more can be said about Callas? I think the woman with the golden voice.

Callas is blessed with this great talent.

Both Callas and Dessay have shrieky and metallic high notes. However, while Callas was a great actress, Dessays acting is dismal, she is often overacting and pathetically tends to compensate for her small childish voice with buffoonish histrionics.

I love Georges Pretre! He got the best out of Maria. Unbelievable that he still conducts the 2010 New Year's Concert in Vienna.
harvard11 2 years ago
Harvard, I have no expertise in opera, but I agree with you, wholeheartedly. It seems as though a lot of Callas' most beautiful work, beyond human singing, was done in Paris, with Pretre conducting. There are several on Youtube
with Callas and Pretre, that are other-wordly.

GOOD NEWS mtnmanjt!
ANNA NETREBKO IS THE GREATEST SOPRANO OF ALL TIME.
BBC2009
BTW, Maria was very good until 1958 but never the best.

Why can no singer compare to La Divina Callas? How could she have been SO good?
mtnmanjt 2 years ago
Do you know that Puccini thought that this piece stops the flow of the play?So Maria did...It's really weird 'cause I think that 'Vissi d' arte' is one of the most beautiful arias ever...

...And what is your opinion of Cecilia Bartoli?
mariadelamor21 2 years ago
What is this?!!.. Do you know the meaning of fanaticism?
María and Anna are extraordinary both. Without mincing words. I think that.
But, thank you for the polemics!...
mariadelamor21 2 years ago
Wrong, wrong Mister Striker, don't you hear the NEWS?
ANNA has surpassed every singer of the past! She is the most popular soprano and is NEW LA DIVINA OF ALL TIME!!
She gets many million dollars for commercials and no singer sells more CD/DVDs.
Striker! the time from Callas is by.
RIP Maria, and don't come back..... it would be the next reincarnation from a devil like YOU striker9410.
