  • Tony Sibson on being beaten by Hagler:

"I couldn't find him for the first two rounds. I figured I'd find him sooner or later but I never did. I asked myself 'Where did he go?' I knew he was there because he kept hitting me."

  • Can you imagine fighting Hagler in a street brawl! Forget about it! The man was a monster!!

  • what good fight ,boxers back the really dug in deep real heart

  • Hagler was a beast!

  • I love this Brit commentator. Sibson hits Hagler once and there is much celebration. Meanwhile Hagler hits Sibson about 20 times and there is silence.

  • @Sealy57

    my thoughts exactly.

  • did allen minton get a invited

  • Say what you want Sibson made him miss alot in those first few rounds. Not a cake walk for Hagler.

  • Hagler was indeed a more than worthy MW champion, however he didn't ever venture out of his comfort zone upwards or down. Duran, Leonard, Hearnes etc, did, there (in my humble opinion) resides true greatness. All credit to Sibo, he came to fight and did gaining earned respect stateside. An excellent posting - thanks - and RIP to Harry Carpenter, the commentary voice of British Boxing both at home and overseas for many, many years!!

  • Haggler made that vicious left hook of Sibson look tame.Goes to show how tough and durable Haggler was. Many of them hooks that Sibbo landed would of knocked many of fighters out.

  • Leonard bashers always have a simplistic stupid way of looking at things. If Leonard was asuch a pussy why didn't Hagler just knock him out? SRL had not fought in 2 years and didn't look good in his last fight and Hagler was the naturally bigger man. So why did it go to the scorecards at all?

And if moving and frustrating Duran was the way to beat him why didn't every fighter do it?

The fact that SRL fought an even fight with Hagler is proof of what a great champion he was.

  • Tony gave it his al, what a FIGHTER!!

But he looked like MMH's sparring partner in there.

  • Leonard didn't win anything. No way he could have beat this Hagler, who beat Sibson. It would have been nice to see a rematch, but in England instead. It would have went longer, but Hagler still would have got him. Today, both Hagler and Sibson are successful businessmen, and not the sterotypical destitute old fighters.

  • @stridelighter

nice comment - both sibbo and marvin are very good friends , Tony was invited over to the US for marvins 50th birthday and stayed with Him at his home - he looks tony up when he has been in the UK doing commentary for fights -

Haglers super fights with Hearns and Mugabi aged him a lot - SRL got a vegas decision - you dont take a mans undisputed title by running .

  • hagler is one of the all time greats..sibbo done us proud that night..

  • This version of Hagler was not just a little but a lot better than the version that fought Duran, Hearns, and Leonard. The younger version was a beautiful blend of finesse and power; the latter version was a pure blood and guts brawler. There are only a handful of middleweights in the history of the sport who could have seriously challenged this Hagler. It is too bad that he is mainly remembered for fights that occured after he was past his prime.

  • take my hat off to sibson,he had a lot of heart.

  • Thanks, uncle Marvin, from an italian "whitey"!!!!

  • I recall a comment from Sibson, post fight and he said, that when he met Hagler he said, 'your not as big as I thought you were' and then added ' but I wasn't looking at his arms!'

  • Sibson was a pretty good brawler, but Hagler snacked on brawlers.

  • That's very true. Hagler always "invited" wild sluggers to try to work on the inside, and then he would proceed to make them pay

  • sugar ray waited till hagler was on the slide after hearns then mugabi warfare - and still lost that fight 7 - 5 leonard only wone one round after round 4 and that was his rally in the 9th - pitty pat punches mixed with cowardly running - sibbo, minter, hearns and mugtabi all stood toe to toe with the marvellous one - true ring warriors , I wanted to jack off with glee when camacho iced rays overhyped ass

  • That's fuckin' sick, dude, but it made me laugh.

  • @chisacat I disgaree with you about the score, but at the same time agree with you about everything else.

Remember also Leonard's first comeback? It was just after Duran almost beat Hagler! Hmmn!

  • @chisacat WRONG...Sugar did wait but so did Hagler. He allowed Leonard to dance around most of the fight instead of pressuring him like he did Mentor, Hamsho, Sibson and Hearns. I still believe Hagler did enough to win but the chink in Haglers armor that night was that he was actually worried about Ray Leonard, it wasn't until the later rounds that Hagler decided to be Hagler and still he didn't wear Leonard down. Leonard didn't beat Hagler, Hagler beat Hagler by being fearful of Leonard!!!!!!!

  • @chisacat hagler won that shit. watch it with out thesoundand you cant hear the crowd ooh and aah every time leonard goffs around or lans a slap.

  • hagler was the best middleweight who ever lived leonard did not beat him .a man of honour and true gti marvelous.

  • i'm from leicester & have met tony on a few occasions as he's best friends with my mates dad. He said to me that he was proud to have stood in the same ring & trade with hagler, but

knew how classy the man was when he'd fought him. He got invited to hagler's 50th b'day bash and said it was surreal as he was SIBBO from syston,Leicester standing talking to TOM CRUISE and others!!! funny story from a very nice fella.

  • great comment brother .tony and lennox are my all time favourite british boxers.

  • hagler was near impossible to hit in those days. And that jab was easily the best in the sport. it cut up almost everyone.

  • where was ray leonard at this time? The world needed him!

  • hagler was the man

  • Both legends, Hagler on a world stage and Sibson in the UK.

  • Marvelous! Marvelous!

  • Hagler had the best jab in boxing. it's more like a right cross coz he puts all his weight into it. He's a right hander with a southpaw stance. Check out his knockouts. He finished everyone with his right hand.

  • I had forgotten how well Sibson actually did in this fight. Nice try, but this was Hagler at his peak.

  • I feel bad for Tony. He's one of those guys who had he come along during a weaker division era, would yhave beeni a great world champion.

TexCobb thanks for bringing back these great, old fights!

  • I belive Ricky Hatton went to the Minter/Sibson boxing academy...Throw elbows, hold and hit, rabbit punch etc...

  • Many boxing experts consider Hagler's performance against Sibson to be the best of his career.
