From what I can hear in this video, the conductor is really the one at fault here. It seems like the kids wanted to speed it up, but he (or she) was forcing them to slow down. And "Last Midnight" was pretty slow too.
Acting-wise though... Eh. When the witch was throwing the beans at the people, for example, to be blunt, I thought that she was feeding breadcrumbs to the pigeons. I think that this one lacked enough emotion, but that might have been due to the slow nature the song was played.
I don't think the cast "destroyed" this song. It is unfortunate that the tempo is so slow. It makes whoever is played the witch fall flat a lot. Increasing the tempo would have made it easier for her to sing the song. There are a lot of accidentals in the song that she seems to miss as well.
It looks like you had a really lovely set though :)
What I find odd about this video is not only that that speed was reduced way to much, but you could tell that the actors wanted to speed it up. It felt like they were slowly trying to push the conductor to speed it up. Also, I find it odd that the speed changes so much throughout the song, one minute you are a tempo and the next minute its reduced to a slugish pace.
@SuicidalMickey In the original production the witch is planning to take the baby with her, as she did with Rapunzel. However the lyrics "You're so nice" up to "you're the world" are edits. The original lyrics are sung to the baby: "You're so pure...give it time you'll mature" and basically detail how she's going to bring up the baby to be less stupid than her current companions. However, the lyrics that changed also eradicate any need for the actress to hold the baby; so the blocking is weird.
also because everyone is busy blaming eachother that no one is holding the baby, the Witch (being a mother) goes to care for the baby. singing last midnight as a lullaby
Omg. That was horrible. Temp0=TOO DAMN SLOW! The witch was awful. She sang straight tones and showed absolutely none of the drama that the song is supposed to be sung with. And this is a morbid comedy. The scenery is too brightly colored. It should've been done darker and given off a macabre feeling to the audience. I give you a D+ for effort.
yeah, we know the tempo was slowed, but this was still well done and well received. I have to politely disagree re your assessment of doing it better...
I have to disagree as well. Slowing it down might be because the cast may not be able to meet the level of a broadway professional. However, I do not believe it was too slow. The tempo varied through the song, actually, and they slowed it down during key parts that, as far as I could tell, helped the audience understand better what they were saying.
I found it fine. The witch wasn't too bad either, but this whole baby-carrying thing a lot of productions are doing is really ineffective, IMO.
I think it was written in for the revival, along with a change in lyrics on a few songs (including this one). However, without the change of lyric, it does lessen the impact somewhat, so I'm with you there... :-)
I agree..everyone does the carrying of th baby, but the actresses don't understand why the the Witch is holding the child. So, they don't actually do anything with it.
Also, without the revised lyrics, it doesn't make as much sense....
dont be mean! this song is an unusual tempo to follow for high school (which im assuming this is) to follow. im sure theyre doing their best. give them a break.
Watch the other cast, they did better on this song than this cast. ((In my opinion at least. ^_^; I worked lights, so saw every perfomance and rehersal.))
i don't get why the witch held the baby during last midnight. i mean i know thats what was done in the revival, but it was one of the many un-necessary adds that was stuck in there. also this felt like it lacked energy.
_so i didn't feel the energy .

Well, you try it. You might notice how awful it is to say.
A group I'm in IS doing it in the original speed though. They sound sort of crazy.

There was nothing behind this performance. The choice to use the baby (a la Broadway revival) wasn't followed through.
