@carlos1424 - LOL.... What a joke. France proved it and so did Holland(Netherlands)!! Us 'A Seleção' have been vulnerable in recent times. But we will, WILL WIN the next WC at home in '14!!
Brazil fielded NONE of the first team players, so this game was worthless. Norway beat Brazil 4-2 at home against a full strength Brazil. They also beat them 2-1 in World Cup 98. In fact, Norway have never lost to Brazil.
Look, this was far from a full strength Brazilian team. Players like Taffarel, Dunga, Alemao, Branco, Careca, Romario, Aldair, Muller, and Bebeto were all missing, just to name a few.
This is the squad that Brazil brought to Denmark. How many of these players have you (or had you) ever heard of?
Acacio, Roberto, Cruz, Gomes, Branco, Bernardo, Silva, Bismarck, Valdo, Gerson, Christovao, Mazinho, Silas, Charles, Edu and Manga.
@expedition16 I agree. They were far from convincing in the group stages (yes, they won all three games in an easy group, but not by playing that well) and then they lost to the Argies in the round of 16
@tienefuego: Certamente, companheiro. Mas a despeito disso não se deve tirar o mérito do "Danish Team" que nessa época era realmente um time incrível! Inclusive vale lembrar que Branco e Mazinho foram campeões mundiais em USA ' 1994. Congratulations Danmark! Brazilians love your football!
Why is it, that all the greatest players on our national team are former or current Brøndby players!!! Schmeichel, Laudrup*3, Lars Olsen, Kim Vilfort, and so on, and so on.
(continued from last post) I also remember during the 80's how Sweden failed to qualify for all European championships and World Cups, while the Danes participated in 84, 86 and 88. That way, growing up in Sweden in the 80's meant that the national team you supported was actually the Danish side, since they had a team in the big tournaments (memories of Mexico '86 come flowing back, watching the games live on tv at night with my father, and I think Denmark really deserved to be semifinalists).
Wow! Them old days! I remember this small three nation tournament (Denmark, Sweden and Brazil), I must've been about 13. I watched the Sweden games on tv, where the Swedes beat Brazil 2-1, and Denmark beat Sweden 6-0. This Danish side was very strong. They were just beginning to build a new team after the success they experienced in France '84 and Mexico '86, and the Euro '92 tournament would be the historic testament to their great strength.
Probably one of the more misleading scorelines in a Denmark match. Brazil actually played well in this game and had just as many chances to score as Denmark, including, if I remember correctly, three shots against the post. 4-4 probably would have been fair. But Laudrup put in one of his best Denmark performances.
No they didn't, in fact it was 3-2 and the Brazilians said afterwards that they had had a real fright and praised Denmark for taking them on the way they did. It was arguably the best game of WC98 and none of the boring way France played. France, even in the final did not attempt what Denmark did. I happen to know there are many Brazilians who love the way Denmark plays. They have a kindred spirit and hate when Brazil does not play according to character. Danish fans does likewise.
@Jesperladefoged No, Danish Soccer Association (DBU) invited Brazil AND Sweden to a minitourney and not a friendly as we know them today. Denmark won the tourney with maximumpoints and a 10-0 score after beating both Sweden (6-0 on the 14th of June) and Brazil (4-0 on the 18th of June).
Would you agree that the generation after the 86 one was less talented then the 92 one? because they had not qualified for EURO 92 and luck was on their side that Yugoslavia got kicked out. And after 92 that generation never got anywhere near those heights again. Btw, I'm from Holland, do you think Denmark have a good side this year?
This was that great Danish generation past it's past though. Their peak was undoubtedly WC 86. But in EURO 88 they lost all their group games. I don't wanna sound too negative but in 89 Brazil didn't have a really great team. All Brazil teams are good but this wasn't a brilliant team like they in WC 82 for example. Btw, Olsen was 41 in 1989 right? he had a really long career.
Actually, they tried to make a new team after the 88 disaster. A lot of the WC 86 players retired from the team, including Elkjaer, Arnesen, Lerby(who later mader a brief comeback), and others. Olsen retired as well, but a year later, at 39(he turned 40, a month after this game), he was recalled, for his final 3 games, with this one being his last.
@JMR83 Brazil would've done much better inthe '90 World cup, if Romario hadn't missed most of their games, due to injury. Him and Careca would've been deadly playing alonside each other. Romario also missed the '98 World Cup due to injury, and the '02 World Cup, due to indiscipline. I found these incidents particularly frustrating, as he was my favourite player, even though I'm an English Everton fan.
@expedition16 Brazil still had a great team. The difference is that the team which they sent to Denmark didn't have any of their decent players. It was a poor team full of players who would never get close to the "real" Brazilian squad.
I remember that game very vividly. Brazil did bring its best players and Denmark was simply superior. They were a great team and deserved to win that day. Never again would brazil be so inferior to its adversary, including that `98 final. And, as far as i can remember, never before had we been so inferior as well. I think the danes can be proud of that.
@ezekielwahwah - 'Who cares about World Cups?'?... It proves to show how good u are, bloody idiot!!! How many times does Denmark make the Semi's, or at least the Quarters then??... Fucken ZILCH!!! As u say who cares about World Cups anyway, why follow the bloody sport internationally???
