I saw him on stage at Constitution Hall in Washington DC about 30-35 years ago and I must say he was absolutely MAJESTIC in person.

Ivan Ribroff was aGerman of I think a russian father and a German mother. He lived in the Taunus which are the surounding hills of Frankfurt. He used to sing with a Russian Choir, I cannot think of the leaders name, he was also a German. If you can ever buy the Russin chorus music it will be money very well spent. Got it the leader was Peter Orloff, he used to be a bit of a sixties heartthrob. Sadly Ribroff died a few years ago.

Was mich an Rebroff so begeistert, ist neben dem unfaßbaren Umfang seiner Stimme die Leichtigkeit mit der er diese Partien gesungen hat. Das wirkt alles so mühelos. Man hat das Gefühl, daß er sich nicht mal anstrengen mußte um nahezu alle vergleichbaren Sänger um Längen zu übertreffen. Ihn ein Jahrhundertgenie zu nennen ist wahrscheinlich noch untertrieben. Er wurde am 31.7.1931 in Berlin geboren und war ein deutscher Sänger. Er studierte in Hamburg Gesang bei dem berühmten Professor Adolf Detel von 1951-1959. Rebroff gestaltete seine Stimme von der extremen Tiefe bis zum Sopran (Falsett-Gesangregister) auf vollendete Weise. Seine Bühnenpräsenz war überwältigend. Falsett ist die Bezeichnung für ein Gesangregister, also die um eine Oktave erhöhte männliche Gesangstimme. Er starb am 27. Februar 2008 in Frankfurt a. Main. Er wird unvergessen bleiben.

Too bad Rebroff started recording much of his material in German. German is a fine language, great for German songs (and there are lots of good ones). But not the right vehicle for beautiful Russian music like this tune.

Russian, of course. Rebroff is a German-born Russophile. Monotonously rings the bell, and the road is a bit dusty, as the boring song of my coachman reaches out across the flat plains. How much sadness in that boring song, how much emotion in that melody of home, that burns like a fire in my cold breast. And I remember other nights, and the fields and forests of home, and my long-dry eye runs a tear like a sparkle. First verse again, but my coachman is quiet, and road in front of me on & on.

I had the great good fortune to see IVAN in 2004. He walked out down the aisles. I was in an aisle seat, I could have touched him, singing away in that amazing voice. I am so glad I got to see the greatest singer known to me before he passed away. And this is the most beautiful song I have ever heard him sing. The sadness, the longing in it... Also the best demonstration of his full range. Everyone I have shared this clip with has loved it.

Ich errinnere mich noch als ich Jungkoch war in Hamburg-Poppenbuettel. Ivan war immer ein sehr beliebter Gast bei uns. Nach der Sperrstunde ist Er immer gerne noch geblieben und wir ( Restaurant Angestellte ) sassen zusammen am Tisch mit Ivan, hatten eine tolle Zeit und sangen. Was fuer ein erlebniss ! Besesonders wann man zurueck sieht,(35 Jahre), einfah unvergesslich schoen. Beste Gruesse an Alle Sein Fan`s ! Ivan ist immer mit uns. Hubert, ..jetzt wohnhaft in Florida.
