Ivan Ribroff was aGerman of I think a russian father and a German mother. He lived in the Taunus which are the surounding hills of Frankfurt. He used to sing with a Russian Choir, I cannot think of the leaders name, he was also a German. If you can ever buy the Russin chorus music it will be money very well spent. Got it the leader was Peter Orloff, he used to be a bit of a sixties heartthrob. Sadly Ribroff died a few years ago.
Februar 2008 in Frankfurt a. Main.
David that is a bad translation from an online translator. Das Einsame Gloeckchen in english fro german means the lonely bell or in this sentence....tone.....
Too bad Rebroff started recording much of his material in German. German is a fine language, great for German songs (and there are lots of good ones). But not the right vehicle for beautiful Russian music like this tune.
Russian, of course. Rebroff is a German-born Russophile. Monotonously rings the bell, and the road is a bit dusty, as the boring song of my coachman reaches out across the flat plains. How much sadness in that boring song, how much emotion in that melody of home, that burns like a fire in my cold breast. And I remember other nights, and the fields and forests of home, and my long-dry eye runs a tear like a sparkle. First verse again, but my coachman is quiet, and road in front of me on & on.
Odnozvuchno gremit kolokol'chik, I doroga pylitsja slegka, i unylo po rovnomu polju Zalivajetsja pesn' jamshchika. I pripomnil ja nochi drugije, I rodnyje polja i lesa, I na ochi, davno uzh sukhije, Nabezhala, kak iskra, sleza. Odnozvuchno gremit kolokol'chik, I doroga pylitsja slegka, I zamolk moj jamshchik, a doroga Predo mnoj daleka, daleka! Got it right finally.....:)
@maccdkm123 If I knew what language this was I could perhaps translate it. I've tried all that I can think of. Slovenian? You've put, "Got it right finally, so you speak English. Any chance of a translation please?
@MrAlfHartigan This is a Russian song, and maccdkm123 wrote it in transliteration in Latin alphabet. Here's translation: The Lonely Coach-Bell Oh, how lonely the coach bell is ringing, And the dust from the road fills the air. And the coachman’s sorrowful singing Floats across the wild fields in despair. That sad song overflows with such feeling, So much grief can be heard in that strain, That my cold heart, long hardened and weary In my bosom was kindled again. --watch second post--
@MrAlfHartigan The Lonely Coach-Bell Oh, how lonely the coach bell is ringing, And the dust from the road fills the air. And the coachman’s sorrowful singing Floats across the wild fields in despair. That sad song overflows with such feeling, So much grief can be heard in that strain, That my cold heart, long hardened and weary In my bosom was kindled again. I recalled other nights, other wand’rings, And the fields and the forests so dear And my eyes, which so long have been arid
I had the great good fortune to see IVAN in 2004. He walked out down the aisles. I was in an aisle seat, I could have touched him, singing away in that amazing voice. I am so glad I got to see the greatest singer known to me before he passed away. And this is the most beautiful song I have ever heard him sing. The sadness, the longing in it... Also the best demonstration of his full range. Everyone I have shared this clip with has loved it.
It is hard to find proper words to describe the feeling when you hear Rebroff singing . It is the ultimate in musical experience for me. Trill in the highest artistic form.
I grew up with my dad playing Ivan Rebroff. But I could not appreciate it then until he played this song for me 2 weeks ago and I got chills and was speechless. WTF. This guy is AMAAAAAAZING. The only fault to this song is that it is too short. I can't talk anymore. I have to listen again....
For those of us whose hearts are anchored in a far away place .. we have certain things that trigger memories of those places and a longing to go back to those places and times...This song describes one of those triggers for a rider of a stage coach...A small bell on the front of a stage coach he is riding in chimes in rhythm of the horses gate and as he looks out into the snowy quiet forest he hears the bell and reminisces... A beautiful song sung best by Ivan...
Greetings: You are giving a perfect description of the feelings of many - and mine. Yes, this is the way it is for many who left their home to live elsewhere. It does not mean one has to be unhappy where one is at the moment but sometimes a song or an image triggers cherished memories in a sad / sweet way.
Was fuer ein erlebniss ! Besesonders wann man zurueck sieht,(35 Jahre), einfah unvergesslich schoen. Beste Gruesse an Alle Sein Fan`s ! Ivan ist immer mit uns. Hubert, ..jetzt wohnhaft in Florida.

I recalled other nights, other wand’rings,
And the fields and the forests so dear,
And my eyes, which so long have been arid,
Became moistened like jewels with a tear.
Oh, how lonely the coach bell is ringing,
As it swings in the night to and fro.
And my coachman has now fallen silent,
And I still have a long way to go
