You're amazing to (1) have recorded it back then; (2) still have the film; and (3) share it here!! Thank you so very much. E :}
I was AT this concert!! It was my first ever concert (many, many after this). I was a Sophomore in High School east of Sacramento and had "snuck" down to Oakland for the day with my then boyfriend!! THANK YOU for sharing. Wow!
@TheTzdope It was 2 Days on the Green #8 & #9 -- October 9 &10, 1976!! Grateful Dead was other band. 34 years ago!! Unbelievable! Will never forget that stage, nor The Who's performance. Wow! I'm so happy to have run across this video. What a treasure - a gem.
This is the last surviving footage of an official Who concert with Keith Moon. It's October 9, 1976. They only played seven more concerts after this. The last one was October 21 in Toronto. They played once again in 1977 and one more time in 1978, but those weren't actual concerts, they were film shoots for their movie The Kids Are Alright with an invited non- paying audience.
This was most likely 1976 as this was the last year the Who toured with Keith Moon while he was still alive. This would have been a Bill Graham "Day on the Green" and two biggest acts during that day on the green were the Who and the Grateful Dead. Nice job of filming this for posterity and posting it to YouTube. Thanks!!
This was me first concert and my favorite band still to this day. I was 16. The Dead opened. Only time I ever saw Keith. As a Bay Arean obssessed with Pete, little did I know he was actually living in Walnut Creek at that time.
Little Week Creek with the 2 lane road going through town? Cousins lived there at that time, but were unaware that he lived there, either. It was a very small little town.
I drive from Denver to Oakland for this. Utah was Morman jack offs at the gas stations. Winnemucca was a joke. 1 hour from Reno was an 1861 wagon train of fun.
I first saw The Who Charlton, London in 76, it pissed down with rain the whole day!!! i would have loved to have been at this gig, looks amazing!!!! Thanks for uploading!!!!
WOW What a great flashback! What a show too. Sat within 30 feet of the stage only to have The Who push us back as the ringing in our ears lasted 2 days. What a "Day on the Grass"
Bill had built a theatrical stage ---with the London ~Golden Gate bridges >reaching over head through the fog --and the bands played in each others respective parks ...drove my 67 VW down from Tahoe
This was my first concert. I was 13. I didn't really know The Who, but I was familiar with The Grateful Dead. I remember Keith Moon jumping over his drum kit for the finally. I also remember there were people passing around pills on a plate during the Dead, and the Dead played non stopped. No breaks, just a long jam. Anyway thanks a lot!! I always remembered that concert as one of the best I ever saw and you proved my memory correct.
Thanx for the memories----I was at the Saturday show, Oct. 9th,1976, and have fond memories of Bill Graham berating the unruly crowd, throwing bottles etc at the stage at the end of the show, 'cuz The Who would not do an encore---the next day they did Johnny B. Goode as an encore to keep the crowds quiet!
Dead & The Who---was great! Can't believe there some Super 8 of this!! Very cool....
yea, I was there also on one of two daze with the Dead. Keith definately mocked the dead during shakin all over encore and Pete yelled at him to stop it. this show was absolutely the most powerful EVER- tho nothin ever topped Jimi Hendrix at the Santa Clra County Fairgrouns May 69 but even it did not have this blistering power-saw the who at SF civic -whos next tour then greensboro-80 -and awesome show in Charlote 98 when they opened the show with all of quadrophenia -music for the ages truly!!
Thank You so much for uploading such amazing footage of The Who in good quality. I'm going to see The Who at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland in March next Year I CAN'T WAIT!
Day On The Green mid 70s double bill with the Grateful Dead. Keith's last gig in the SF bay area. They were really great that day and played Shakin' All Over as an encore. I think they also celebrated John's birthday backstage. Great times!
Folks are saying this is the '76 concert- suppose so. -but I saw them at the Coliseum in '74 - crazy billing. They were on after the Grateful Dead. Everyone was there for one or the other- I even remember seeing a sign "Hendrix Lives" and wondered who that was. -well I was a kid.
I too was at this concert...Oct 9, 1976 (Entwistle's birthday). The only better Who concert I ever attended was about six months earlier at Winterland in SF. Same show...only 5000 lucky lucky people. I'm SO glad this has been posted...in my case a real, true deje vus
Why are my comments being removed? All I said was my B- day is Oct. 9 also.Man, If you tell me what I did, I'll stop posting. Is that fair? Come really look at my art inspired by the Who . And P.S.play a good show in nor cal, and when you play so cal, would It hurt to buy a homeless person sleeping in the lot of the Holywood bowl a room in a hotel6 for one night !Moon would have wanted It.
Pete Townshend wrote Tommy, Who's Next, & Quadrophenia within a five year period... ABSOLUTE GENIUS! The most underrated song writer ever, PERIOD! Total Passion in his writing; his music is the voice of adolescence and angst... and it's all timeless and will never be out of date! Pete Townshend and The WHO are NUMBER! No one can touch them! All four members are irreplaceable... that is what makes a perfect group!
This was in the days BEFORE video. This was Super-8 film. Each roll was only three minutes! I think I brought about four or five rolls-- I didn't make much money back then though and just bought what I could afford. The security guards almost took my camera at the gate. What you see is what I got. :-)
@sylvanro This is the best Who videos we've ever seen. The pro stuff doesn't even compare to the real feeling of having been there and caring enough to put this much effort into the adventure to capture it for all posterity! Thank You!
@sylvanro This is the best Who videos we've ever seen. The pro stuff doesn't even compare to the real feeling of having been there and caring enough to put this much effort into the adventure to capture it for all posterity! Thank You!
This was the Day on the Green, when the Grateful Dead opened up for the Who. A strange bill, when you consider that the greatest band of all time was the opener for the greatest ROCK band of all time.
They called these shows "A Day On the Green". My cousin and some friends took some of these concerts in back in the 70's. I still cannot imagine the Dead playing at the same billing as the Who. That is almost as back as the earlier tours with Herman's Hermits!
Great footage. I've only ever seen stills photos of this show before. I beleive the stage backdrop for the '76 Oakland show was a panorama of a city-scape but I can't tell in the footage. Great to see a '70s Who show from an audience perspective. Closest thing those of us born after the 'Oo's' heyday will get to experiencing those great live events.
Wow, I was about ten yards from where this was taken. Great memories!! It was the Ox's birthday. The Dead played for about six hour and then Blast off. Moonie was still vibrant and I'll never forget how high Pete was jumping. Thank you for posting!!!!!!!
Wow, this is vintage!! This is the show they played with the grateful dead. You should definitely send/sell this to Wolfgang's Vaults, this is great history!! DO you have any more 8mm footage from concerts you went to in the 70's?? Keep it coming!!
Can you give more info on this. I think Pete himself would love to have this for his personal vaults. It's very cool to see the show from a fan's perspective. So strange that you can hear the people around the camera talking, while the Loudest Band in the World sound like they're playing through 30 watt amps(?). Crazy mic affect....More More! This is 75 or 76 tour.
I love THE WHO and I love THE DEAD,however pairing the 2 of them seems kinda odd. You've got the generally laid back, sedate Deadheads, and you've got the rowdy, pumped up Who fans. Seems like a bit of a clash. Still,it appears it worked quite well.
The Who have always had a special place in Bay area fans hearts though because of there physcodelic roots (even if just tiny roots, I Can See For Miles, etc.) and there performance at Monterey Pop. So I can see Dead Heads getting into it a bit. Nice little change for them.
Wow, this is really neat footage. Too bad I didn't grow up then to see them in their prime. It was cute how Keith rolled on the stage and Roger did a cartwheel following him haha.
I am sitting here looking at the poster. I'm so glad I kept it and had it framed. The Dead played first then The Who kicked all forms of ass. Security took my tequila at the gate. No bottles or cans. Met a nice couple with a plastic gallon jug of vodka and OJ. Made my girlfriend trade four joints for it. Fucking hippies can't make a decent screwdriver. They are without a doubt the most worthless life form on the planet.
think Youtube would let you post the entire concert? I'd kill to see that. I've seen pictures from this concert so many times but never any footage like this.
I don't have the entire concert... I was shooting this on super-8 film and could only afford four or five rolls... each was only 3 minutes... much more expensive than video is today...They started to take my camera away when I was coming into the concert but then they let me keep it... I am glad others are enjoying what I got thoughl...
hey! I did too. Do you remember Pete talking about how the Bay Area weather reminded him of England? I first saw the Who in 1971, and by 1989 they were well past their prime, but that show you saw in Oakland in '89 was one of their finest.
And they're on great form too! Good voices, good playing. Just look at them feeding off eachother, especially Pete and Roger. That's what still keeps the who going these days. Many thanks for sharing this!
Oh my gosh; this is amazing!! There are so many pictures of this concert, but video from anytime in 76 is extremely rare... thank you so much for sharing!!
If you ever decided to circulate this gig, people would probably begin treating you like a king =D.
goddam this is the diamond in the crown of WHO vision! NEVER thought I'd see a 1976 show! I'm shaking, too much, words can't express it! AAAAAAAAGGGGHHH, burn the sun and tear down the walls! THE WHO 4 EVER
Yeah, I was there as well! Thanks for the upload - especially since I can barely remember the concert. I was a bit further to the right of the camera man :)

Be on the lookout for drum circles! Actually I was blown away by Phil Lesh's bass sound. He was really "on" that day. So were Mickey and Bill,

This could be either October 9 or 10 1976. The Who played Oakland on these dates but at the Alameda County Stadium.

This is rare! This is when they shared the show with the Grateful Dead.

think Youtube would let you post the entire concert? I'd kill to see that. I've seen pictures from this concert so many times but never any footage like this.
coltom 4 years ago
I don't have the entire concert... I was shooting this on super-8 film and could only afford four or five rolls... each was only 3 minutes... much more expensive than video is today...They started to take my camera away when I was coming into the concert but then they let me keep it... I am glad others are enjoying what I got thoughl...

this is cool !saw the who at oakland coliseum aug 29th 1989
mslaerik 4 years ago
hey! I did too. Do you remember Pete talking about how the Bay Area weather reminded him of England? I first saw the Who in 1971, and by 1989 they were well past their prime, but that show you saw in Oakland in '89 was one of their finest.
davidd515 4 years ago
yes i remember they played a lot of "tommy" mabie we sat by each other would that be wild thanks for you comment peace !

And they're on great form too! Good voices, good playing. Just look at them feeding off eachother, especially Pete and Roger. That's what still keeps the who going these days. Many thanks for sharing this!
