  • Yeah, I was there as well! Thanks for the upload - especially since I can barely remember the concert. I was a bit further to the right of the camera man :)

17 years old and not a care in the world except partyin' at the Day on the Greens. What a great time and place to be growing up. It seemed like I was seeing some major band every couple of weeks.

Thanks for the memories - mine were pretty clouded back then :)

  • Hi everybody,

My name is Frédéric and i live in Bordeaux in France. I was present at this fabulous concert with the Grateful Dead in first part. I'm looking for people who was presents like me at this concert. You can contact me at the folowing adress:

    sanfermin.fred@gmail.com

  • Was this the Day on the Green where they also had the Grateful Dead? I was at that show.

  • was there up in the very top row seats overlooking the stadium, weather was totally assume , sun setting , wind crisp and bright blue skies. The music was reverberating around the stadium, 'won't get fooled again".18 years old, me my friends were leaving high school. this was the best send off one could ask for.

  • omg look again in the back itss ittss KEITH MOOOOOOON yeah. check him out.

  • Too bad there isn't a complete song on this. It does remind me how much better concerts were in the 70's,though.

  • Is this the show that had the Dead opening for them on the second day ? My 1rst concert just turned 15 i was blown away in 1976

  • October 1976, I saw 'em a few days earlier at the San Diego Sports Arena, awesome show! ;)

  • if this is Day on the Green 76 oakland Concert best concert overall the sound and all was so pure can't really tell from this but its still great Thanks for posting it!!!

  • This is some great footage. Surprisingly high quality considering the medium, and the band is in great form. Thanks for uploading this.

  • Can i download a dvd of this 10 minute footage?

  • It's either the 9th or 10th October 1976 =)

  • thanks for sharing very cool

  • 1976 October I believe - have a friend who was there !

  • sylvanro - This is so amazingly great! This was literally the FIRST concert I went to (I was in high school), and I "Can't Explain" how fantastic it is for me to be able to come visit from time to time. HA!!

    You're amazing to (1) have recorded it back then; (2) still have the film; and (3) share it here!! Thank you so very much. E :}

  • This was either Oct 9th or 10th 1976

  • That is so cool that you have this and shared with all us WHO fans. Concerts sure have changed over the years!

  • I was AT this concert!! It was my first ever concert (many, many after this). I was a Sophomore in High School east of Sacramento and had "snuck" down to Oakland for the day with my then boyfriend!! THANK YOU for sharing. Wow!

  • @hothostmum what year was it?

    my guess is around 1977!

  • @hothostmum I amend my guess!

i say it is 1975 and they are supporting the tommy film!

  • @TheTzdope It was 2 Days on the Green #8 & #9 -- October 9 &10, 1976!! Grateful Dead was other band. 34 years ago!! Unbelievable! Will never forget that stage, nor The Who's performance. Wow! I'm so happy to have run across this video. What a treasure - a gem.

    E

  • this is AWESOME .. not like a tv concert. its from the crowd and you can FEEL it

  • This video is a rare treasure!

  • Day on the Green!

  • I was there. I remember Pete said that playing with the Dead made him feel young again. He was only in his 30s then.

  • Man this is sooo good! What a treat! Thanks for posting!

  • Priceless!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is the last surviving footage of an official Who concert with Keith Moon. It's October 9, 1976. They only played seven more concerts after this. The last one was October 21 in Toronto. They played once again in 1977 and one more time in 1978, but those weren't actual concerts, they were film shoots for their movie The Kids Are Alright with an invited non- paying audience.

  • This was most likely 1976 as this was the last year the Who toured with Keith Moon while he was still alive. This would have been a Bill Graham "Day on the Green" and two biggest acts during that day on the green were the Who and the Grateful Dead. Nice job of filming this for posterity and posting it to YouTube. Thanks!!

  • Hey, I was there!!!!

Was never so toasted in my life!

I know I slept through the Dead

    Then it was Jefferson Airplane

    With The Who closing

    right? lol

too cool, wish it was better quality...I was up on my BF's shoulders pretty much in the same area where you had your camera fixed!

  • Great post i'm jealous as hell dude!

  • October '76 Man! Day on the Green with the Grateful Dead! Great going dude!

  • Thanks so much for this AWESOME document, @sylvanro

  • It's better without the sound. Turn the sound off, you'll see.

  • This was me first concert and my favorite band still to this day. I was 16. The Dead opened. Only time I ever saw Keith. As a Bay Arean obssessed with Pete, little did I know he was actually living in Walnut Creek at that time.

  • Little Week Creek with the 2 lane road going through town? Cousins lived there at that time, but were unaware that he lived there, either. It was a very small little town.

  • Just saw a picture of this concert from backstage! IT WAS HUGE!

  • Me too, Centennial Halls dorm at D.U.. Brought my Peaches Records t-shirt.

  • Thanks for posting, enjoyed it.

  • it's super 8 - be happy there's footage at all

  • @UncleCaptainMidnight My vote is not registering but 2 thumbs UP. Me and the Wife.

  • please post this in high quality or hd cause the picture looks like shit please so we can see it better

  • I drive from Denver to Oakland for this. Utah was Morman jack offs at the gas stations. Winnemucca was a joke. 1 hour from Reno was an 1861 wagon train of fun.

  • Dude! Me too! I went with some buds from the U. of Denver. Good times no doubt. The Dead were good too!

  • Townsend`s stage presence is a rock n roll whirlwind.WERE ARE THESE ANIMALS ANY MORE?

  • This was October '76.. " 9 Days On The Green " - double billed with Grateful Dead, promoted by Bill Graham Presents.

  • This was 1976 and the last American tour with Keith Moon on the drums.

  • If this was Saturday, I was there too. Keith was increadible!!

  • I See me and my friend in the crowd,,yep thats me in the crowd,he was afew feet back filming, thanks,Best daveK

    new BLOG:

    vintagetourjackets

  • Man you captured some great footage. The WHO ae the best. Thank you.

  • effin awesome. i loved this!!!

  • I first saw The Who Charlton, London in 76, it pissed down with rain the whole day!!! i would have loved to have been at this gig, looks amazing!!!! Thanks for uploading!!!!

  • man thats always cool to see old footage actually from the crowd!

  • WOW What a great flashback! What a show too. Sat within 30 feet of the stage only to have The Who push us back as the ringing in our ears lasted 2 days. What a "Day on the Grass"

  • Amazing footage thank you for posting it

  • Bill had built a theatrical stage ---with the London ~Golden Gate bridges >reaching over head through the fog --and the bands played in each others respective parks ...drove my 67 VW down from Tahoe

  • This was my first concert. I was 13. I didn't really know The Who, but I was familiar with The Grateful Dead. I remember Keith Moon jumping over his drum kit for the finally. I also remember there were people passing around pills on a plate during the Dead, and the Dead played non stopped. No breaks, just a long jam. Anyway thanks a lot!! I always remembered that concert as one of the best I ever saw and you proved my memory correct.

  • the ENERGY!

  • Great Concert, I see myself in your frame about 5 feet up, you were right behind me filming,,,

LEIGH HIGH SCHOOL RULES 1977,,DAVID KEELER

  • Dead and the Who. Harry S. and I got In when he traded the security gaurd a gold digital watch.(new technology then)

  • Thanx for the memories----I was at the Saturday show, Oct. 9th,1976, and have fond memories of Bill Graham berating the unruly crowd, throwing bottles etc at the stage at the end of the show, 'cuz The Who would not do an encore---the next day they did Johnny B. Goode as an encore to keep the crowds quiet!

Dead & The Who---was great! Can't believe there some Super 8 of this!! Very cool....

  • Thanks for posting that.

  • I was there in spirit!!!!!

  • yea, I was there also on one of two daze with the Dead. Keith definately mocked the dead during shakin all over encore and Pete yelled at him to stop it. this show was absolutely the most powerful EVER- tho nothin ever topped Jimi Hendrix at the Santa Clra County Fairgrouns May 69 but even it did not have this blistering power-saw the who at SF civic -whos next tour then greensboro-80 -and awesome show in Charlote 98 when they opened the show with all of quadrophenia -music for the ages truly!!

  • what was keith doing to mock the dead?

  • Thank You so much for uploading such amazing footage of The Who in good quality. I'm going to see The Who at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland in March next Year I CAN'T WAIT!

  • Thank you so much! My comments.

1:58. Whoa. The amazing Pete Townshend.

2:57. Townshend backs over Daltry and knocks him down!

6:37. Townshend just about clocks Daltry with the head of his guitar.

Just another day on tour for The Who...

  • I was at this show Grateful Dead & The Who

  • 1976

  • Yeah,1976 isnt exactly early in the decade.

  • That's awesome! Anybody knows the right date of this concert?

  • DUDE !!! Fuckin awesome score ! God, I hack my arm of for the entire show !

  • Day On The Green mid 70s double bill with the Grateful Dead. Keith's last gig in the SF bay area. They were really great that day and played Shakin' All Over as an encore. I think they also celebrated John's birthday backstage. Great times!

  • This is not 1970, because some songs have been who's next album and who,s next was made 1971

  • This is so good- sacred! They look like they are having so much fun!!!! Captures the whole feel. Here's to ya!

  • Thanks!

  • This has gotta be one of Moon's last shows. I love how he did a somersault when they came out on stage.

  • Folks are saying this is the '76 concert- suppose so. -but I saw them at the Coliseum in '74 - crazy billing. They were on after the Grateful Dead. Everyone was there for one or the other- I even remember seeing a sign "Hendrix Lives" and wondered who that was. -well I was a kid.

  • KEITH IS GOD OF DRUMS

  • Thanks!

    @ 1:55, The Ox rules!

  • thanks man!´The Who Rocks and i love the Quadrophenia film!

  • I too was at this concert...Oct 9, 1976 (Entwistle's birthday). The only better Who concert I ever attended was about six months earlier at Winterland in SF. Same show...only 5000 lucky lucky people. I'm SO glad this has been posted...in my case a real, true deje vus

  • Holy shit! That's the same day as mine! I did not know that! thanks!I rule like that! Patter.

  • Oct. 9th is John Lennon's B'day too.

  • Why are my comments being removed? All I said was my B- day is Oct. 9 also.Man, If you tell me what I did, I'll stop posting. Is that fair? Come really look at my art inspired by the Who . And P.S.play a good show in nor cal, and when you play so cal, would It hurt to buy a homeless person sleeping in the lot of the Holywood bowl a room in a hotel6 for one night !Moon would have wanted It.

  • and its mine

  • Pete Townshend wrote Tommy, Who's Next, & Quadrophenia within a five year period... ABSOLUTE GENIUS! The most underrated song writer ever, PERIOD! Total Passion in his writing; his music is the voice of adolescence and angst... and it's all timeless and will never be out of date! Pete Townshend and The WHO are NUMBER! No one can touch them! All four members are irreplaceable... that is what makes a perfect group!

  • the grateful dead the best band ever, get a fuckin life! the beatles are the best band ever with the who a very close second

  • jerry garcia once said pete was one of his best freinds

    my vote is

    Beatles then Garateful Dead

gain this is one of the best concert films on YT

  • Very Cool, How did you get you're hands on this footage or was that you with the camra?

    Well whatever thanks for sharing.

  • my footage I took...

  • its a crime not to put this entire show up !!!!

    aaaah, ha.

    pleeeeease

or atleast put SOME entire songs out from this

  • This was in the days BEFORE video. This was Super-8 film. Each roll was only three minutes! I think I brought about four or five rolls-- I didn't make much money back then though and just bought what I could afford. The security guards almost took my camera at the gate. What you see is what I got. :-)

  • @sylvanro This is the best Who videos we've ever seen. The pro stuff doesn't even compare to the real feeling of having been there and caring enough to put this much effort into the adventure to capture it for all posterity! Thank You!

  • Thanks for sharing!!!! Awesome!

  • You cut out roger's scream?

  • This was the Day on the Green, when the Grateful Dead opened up for the Who. A strange bill, when you consider that the greatest band of all time was the opener for the greatest ROCK band of all time.

  • this is a fabulous record. thank you

  • my god this is so cool...do you have the whole thing?

  • Amazing moment in time.

    Thanks for sharing!!

  • This is some awesome priceless stuff! Thanks!

  • They called these shows "A Day On the Green". My cousin and some friends took some of these concerts in back in the 70's. I still cannot imagine the Dead playing at the same billing as the Who. That is almost as back as the earlier tours with Herman's Hermits!

  • I'd like to thank you because I have this footage on a DVD somewhere with other sup 8 clips. So thanks very much for filming it!

  • Great footage. I've only ever seen stills photos of this show before. I beleive the stage backdrop for the '76 Oakland show was a panorama of a city-scape but I can't tell in the footage. Great to see a '70s Who show from an audience perspective. Closest thing those of us born after the 'Oo's' heyday will get to experiencing those great live events.

  • great footage, but noooooooo, how could you cut my generation before the solo

  • Wow, I was about ten yards from where this was taken. Great memories!! It was the Ox's birthday. The Dead played for about six hour and then Blast off. Moonie was still vibrant and I'll never forget how high Pete was jumping. Thank you for posting!!!!!!!

  • Thanks. I was there. It was the Dead and the Who...great concert.

  • Wow, this is vintage!! This is the show they played with the grateful dead. You should definitely send/sell this to Wolfgang's Vaults, this is great history!! DO you have any more 8mm footage from concerts you went to in the 70's?? Keep it coming!!

  • Superb!Thank you.

  • Can you give more info on this. I think Pete himself would love to have this for his personal vaults. It's very cool to see the show from a fan's perspective. So strange that you can hear the people around the camera talking, while the Loudest Band in the World sound like they're playing through 30 watt amps(?). Crazy mic affect....More More! This is 75 or 76 tour.

  • HOLY CRAP man.. u should like... put every song here... seperately on youtube so we can all watch the whole thing :P

  • I love THE WHO and I love THE DEAD,however pairing the 2 of them seems kinda odd. You've got the generally laid back, sedate Deadheads, and you've got the rowdy, pumped up Who fans. Seems like a bit of a clash. Still,it appears it worked quite well.

  • The Who have always had a special place in Bay area fans hearts though because of there physcodelic roots (even if just tiny roots, I Can See For Miles, etc.) and there performance at Monterey Pop. So I can see Dead Heads getting into it a bit. Nice little change for them.

  • Wow, this is really neat footage. Too bad I didn't grow up then to see them in their prime. It was cute how Keith rolled on the stage and Roger did a cartwheel following him haha.

  • Just one comment: THANK YOU for sharing this.

  • your welcome... I'm so glad people enjoy it.

  • I am sitting here looking at the poster. I'm so glad I kept it and had it framed. The Dead played first then The Who kicked all forms of ass. Security took my tequila at the gate. No bottles or cans. Met a nice couple with a plastic gallon jug of vodka and OJ. Made my girlfriend trade four joints for it. Fucking hippies can't make a decent screwdriver. They are without a doubt the most worthless life form on the planet.

  • Derrrr, Cartman!!!!

  • Be on the lookout for drum circles! Actually I was blown away by Phil Lesh's bass sound. He was really "on" that day. So were Mickey and Bill,

  • This could be either October 9 or 10 1976. The Who played Oakland on these dates but at the Alameda County Stadium.

  • damnit this is amazing what year?

  • which show is this? i have audio from one performance. want more rare who stuff? i can hook you up. just message me right here on youtube.

  • it must been lovely to se them with the original set-up....

can't wait to see them in stockholm!...hope they still rock the same much as they did before!

  • This is rare! This is when they shared the show with the Grateful Dead.

  • think Youtube would let you post the entire concert? I'd kill to see that. I've seen pictures from this concert so many times but never any footage like this.

  • I don't have the entire concert... I was shooting this on super-8 film and could only afford four or five rolls... each was only 3 minutes... much more expensive than video is today...They started to take my camera away when I was coming into the concert but then they let me keep it... I am glad others are enjoying what I got thoughl...

  • There have been claíms that these shows were actually filmed .... didn't spot any "film crew" ?

  • Way cool! This is very special for me...I was there and that show remains the best show I've ever seen.

  • this is cool !saw the who at oakland coliseum aug 29th 1989

  • hey! I did too. Do you remember Pete talking about how the Bay Area weather reminded him of England? I first saw the Who in 1971, and by 1989 they were well past their prime, but that show you saw in Oakland in '89 was one of their finest.

  • yes i remember they played a lot of "tommy" mabie we sat by each other would that be wild thanks for you comment peace !

  • And they're on great form too! Good voices, good playing. Just look at them feeding off eachother, especially Pete and Roger. That's what still keeps the who going these days. Many thanks for sharing this!

  • Oh my gosh; this is amazing!! There are so many pictures of this concert, but video from anytime in 76 is extremely rare... thank you so much for sharing!!

If you ever decided to circulate this gig, people would probably begin treating you like a king =D.

  • oh my, oh my....this is great!

  • too cool! how many people where there about?

  • This is like someone digging up a video of Lincoln reading the Gettysburg address. Where do you guys come up with this shit?

  • Such energy. what a gift to be able to see this! thanks for posting.

  • ah..'76...the year The Who forgot how to look cool onstage.

  • They look just like they did in '75, you twat. Piss orf.

  • You're joking, right?

  • It's from the day on the green (with Greatful Dead) on oct 76 (the 9th or rather the 10th)

  • goddam this is the diamond in the crown of WHO vision! NEVER thought I'd see a 1976 show! I'm shaking, too much, words can't express it! AAAAAAAAGGGGHHH, burn the sun and tear down the walls! THE WHO 4 EVER

  • thank u sylvanro , youve recindiled my love affair with the who

  • Rare! Think it was '76? Thanks for posting

  • Wow....im speechless. If im correct this is problably the double concert that the who and the dead played together.

  • AWESOME...JUST PLAIN AWESOME!
