True libertarian conservatives unite, not divide like liberals and progressives have done. The Tea Party's main concern is the federal debt and spending, after Bush's TARP bailouts and Obama's $1 Trillion Healthcare and Welfare spending spree. So I have an intelligent question, but certainly not expecting an intelligent answer here. Why were the insurance companies prevented from crossing state lines in the first place? Is this something the insurance companies wanted? States wanted? Or another? The common ground for both sides is opening up competition and part of that is offering more private options across state boundaries. Why was the competition limited in the first place? What is the specific law that prevents it?

It's because healthcare decisions were left up to the state. Each state passed different laws. Some cancer foundation would lobby in state A and a law would mandate payment for cancer form X. State B would be controlled by insurance lobbyists and allow higher rates. The status quo simply means you can't buy insurance across state lines because the laws are different. Insurance companies want this status quo because if there was more open exchange, every state would buy the best options.

Understand. So there is no Federal law that prohibits purchasing insurance across state lines. Each state regulates its own insurance and imposes different laws. Any company is free to abide by those laws and enter the market if they wish. It is just more difficult for them to do so. What I can't figure is how is this different than auto, life or home insurance? Each state regulates those as well. Why has that state regulation not proven to be a barrier to entering the market?
