i saw him as Val Jean a few weeks ago at The Walnut Street Theater is philly. i got to meet him this past weekend i got an autograph! he's so sweet =]
AH! I saw him there too! He was so fantabulous. My friends and I were sitting in the last row of the mezzanine dying. But I didn't get to meet him. Lucky!
Except for the fact that he was not acting in the first place here. The whole point of this performance wasn't to sing it as Marius, but as a tribute to people he has known over the years who have died from or lived with HIV/AIDS...this wasn't within the context of Les Miz at all, but a charity concert for amFAR. There was no acting, just personal emotion there.
Oh, poor Hugh, being sick at a concert! But he still did awesome here. His Marius is second to only Michael Ball's, IMO, and oodles better than *blech* David Bryant.
Yes, they are friends. Peter Lockyer was his understudy at Phantom for a time and they both toured w/ Barbra Streisand over the summer. I don't know if Peter will ever play Marius again. I don't think Hugh will since I'm familiar with his next project, though it's not official yet.
Thank you very much for your reply. I am Japanese and had lived in the U.S. and London for 2 years since 2000. I had seen many musical shows during that time, but Peter Lockyer's Marius in Broadways was the best acting in my opinion. Of course, I found Hugh's musical skill is very good from this website.
Sigh! I missed so many shows that he's be in. DARN!!! I thought he was great in MG! He's so talented! No wonder he's touring with Streisand right now! :D I hope his first solo album is out soon if not out already. :)
I like Michael Ball as a concert/recording artist, though I've never really carried for his Marius. However, I wouldn't go to the trouble of seeking out one of his videos here solely for the purpose of saying "Hugh Panaro is the best Marius and always will be the best Marius." I respect both men and the opinions of their fans too much to do so.
Okay. Watching this for the thousandth time; can't believe I haven't commented yet. He's just so incredible! Ranks right up there with Michael Ball - but you can actually hear that he's sick. His pitch is off at points, and his tone is weak, too, which is really unusual for him. Regardless, I love this song. And I love Hugh Panaro. He's like chocolate - better than sex. XD He's so cute! Love those dimples.
There are no words to tell how much I love this.. Hugh is wonderful, and the emotion he puts into everything (especially songs like this that obviously hold a meaning to him) is inspiring. Love it!!
Actually, he was pretty sick that evening. He didn't want it mentioned at the time, but he's talked about it in an interview since then so it's all good. He'd gotten a spider bite a night or two before which left him with a 102 fever. He was sicker than we realized and had a trip to the ER later that night.
Oh poor hugh. What was he exactly sick with? He dosen't look sick. He's soooooooooo cute and so sweet. I wish I could meet him some day. Thats so sweet that he is crying. His mother must have raised him well.
I dont think this song should be one for him to cry during, since i don't believe marius cries during this scene in Les Mis. Of course, it's up to the performer to decide what to do. I just think its supposed to be more bitter than sorrowful as in crying.
But he wasn't in character as Marius in the first place. This was a very small concert to raise money for amFAR. He wasn't playing a part in Les Miz with this anymore than he was playing Lestat when he sang "Right Before My Eyes" that same night. As he said, the song became an anthem for the AIDS cause and he has lost friends to it over the years. So, any tears this time were his own. I've seen him play Marius and he didn't cry during that scene.
oh wow. i love it but I like it better not looking at him I think. I don't know...causesome part of me thinks its really overacting but eh...its just me. Love him still though.
I can't agree that it was overacting. As he mentioned in his intro, the song has a lot of personal meaning to him and all the emotion he showed there was his own genuine feelings, not acting at all.
Beautifully sung, too bad his shirt doesn't have buttons.

is he a friend of Peter Lockyer? I wanted to see Peter Lockyer's Marius too. Do you know anything about if he is playing Marius again?

Hopefully, he'll be able to focus on it when he gets back from the tour. He and his label have both talked about releasing it this fall.
