@alakazam2192 I completely agree. The band I'm in is playing this, and it's probably the most epic song I've ever had the chance to perform. I play the tympani part, and it's a BEAST. Yet listening to this doesn't quite do justice to the sense of awe you feel when you actually play it; being right behind the bass line, those chords that come in around 1:38 just sound unbelievable.
I'm playing this in wind ensemble right now and it's one of the best pieces I've ever heard. It really sounds like it could be in a movie-that might add to why I like it so much.
Ok, so they did ok in the beginning. Like, they didnt match up and speak as one when it was supposed to happen and they were out of tune a few times. But not bad. Personally, i thought the beginning could hve been a little bit faster. When my band played this piece, we played the beginning a tad faster. This piece is such an amazing piece of music, and with this piece our band recently won a competition throughout the whole state of new jersey.
I play bass clarinet and the whole notes in this song are tough but soooo worth it cause it's sounds so lovely! Last night we had about 105 people playing this song at our concert and it was so epic! But on the second movement are guest conductor took it way faster then 184 but it still sound very cool! David manlanka and Andrew boysen(our guest conductor)are right now my top composers! To you the bands who have not played this song you need to play it!
@Makilovesu1 DUDE! Were you at the Science Hill/ETSU concert?! It sounds exactly like you were considering the Andrew Boysen thing. If you were, that was DEFINITELY the most epicest of epic concerts :D
@blkandwitekeys It was definitely amazing to hear. I was in the group that played Mother Earth, which was demanding but another neat Maslanka piece. I think I'm starting to admire his music!
David Maslanka... is a musical genius. He is by far my favorite composer. We played this a few months back at The OMEA all-state high school honor band in Oklahoma. It was a thrilling piece to play.
Personally, I loved it! The first time I heard this it sounded like the soundtrack to a great movie, like The Perfect Storm or Armageddon or something. My gosh, amazing piece! :D
We played this piece before the U of I wind symphony, and it was the greatest feeling in the world, especially during the end of the second movement. Even more because he worked with us on it.
I LOVE the very low chords in this song. As a clarinet player, I love playing in the low register of my instrument as well as high. This gave me chills. (:
I played this today with the all southern honor band in California and it was one of the most amazing songs ive ever played. Our conductor was gary green from Miami university, he is a very good friend of david and i found that how he describes david and how he described this song from david's point was that most amazing experience of my life. This song is absolutely amazing and will live on forever, its very well written and has so much passion hidden behind every note.
as a horn player, i much prefer the second movement, but overall i think this entire piece is awesome. i was very dissapointed when we stopped playing this in band class.
my Band director got to work with mr maslanka and cshe asked him how does he get ideas and he told her that they were all dreams that he has had this one is about a girl that is geting chased by a animal and gets eating the enitre piece is mvmt 1 and 2
@IForgotMyFirstAcount Lol, who is this?? It's Lucia. And heck yeah, our french horns are more than amazing. We're gonna destroy playing this song at states (:
@Beastlyshin00b Oh, I know! I wish I was playing contra for this song buttttt... I'm playing first clarinet!! :D My solo in the beginning... kind of nerve wrecking....
When I was in Wind Ensemble at Mundelein High School we did this for Superstate and I play tuba with one other person and the directors said me & the other guy had more sound and tone quality than nine tubas. lol. Made my day. :D
We played this song in the Texas All-State Concert Band this year. I played 3rd part clarinet which is more downgraded than 2nd in both movements and I was very upset I didn't get 1st part, but after a few days, it didn't matter to me cuz the music's impact was so phenomenal. I still sing the song to myself and think about it everyday, and we performed more than a month ago!
I totally agree with pacman80500, the first movement is very moving. The second clarinet part does have a lot of whole notes but just listen the first movement and you can tell that it is much deeper musically than the second movement.
I don't know what is wrong with all these comments. I pray to God that none of you become a professional musician because this first movement is an amazing piece of music and for all of you who think this movement sucks or is boring try actually listening to it and you will hopefully see the power it brings. I play trombone and I like the 2nd movement too but you people need to learn to be real musicians and love the fast as well as the slow. Do not come to Stetson. You wont fit in.
@pacman80500 I play trombone too! I played this in January with an amazing band, blew the audience out of their chairs. Maslanka is one of my favorite composers to play... pure genius
@pacman80500 I really hope you don't truly think like that. Yes, a good musician listens, enjoys, and understands contrasting pieces (fast or slow), but also a good musician respects the differences in a people's opinions of music. Good musicians embrace the fact that everyone has their own opinions and interpretations of different pieces. You have successfully made yourself, as long as Stetson, look like a jackass.

I play 1st clarinet on this. The solo is gorgeous. Difficult to play in tune with muted cornet at the end. I commend this player for it.
I'm a little disappointed that the player here left out the second set of grace notes in measure 10...they really add to the line.
All in all, gorgeous. Amazing job.
