  • i am completely in love with the clarinets in this piece!

  • God the trumpet solos in this one were so hard... cup muted.. but I love this song so much... here I am looking it up 4 years later

  • I'm looking at all your videos... and you have definitely earned my subscription.

  • I had to practice this by myself for Honours Band (I play flute), and it made absolutely NO sense until I listened to this!

  • @alakazam2192 I completely agree. The band I'm in is playing this, and it's probably the most epic song I've ever had the chance to perform. I play the tympani part, and it's a BEAST. Yet listening to this doesn't quite do justice to the sense of awe you feel when you actually play it; being right behind the bass line, those chords that come in around 1:38 just sound unbelievable.

  • I'm playing this in wind ensemble right now and it's one of the best pieces I've ever heard. It really sounds like it could be in a movie-that might add to why I like it so much.

  • Ok, so they did ok in the beginning. Like, they didnt match up and speak as one when it was supposed to happen and they were out of tune a few times. But not bad. Personally, i thought the beginning could hve been a little bit faster. When my band played this piece, we played the beginning a tad faster. This piece is such an amazing piece of music, and with this piece our band recently won a competition throughout the whole state of new jersey.

  • i played this for all county my senior year. both movements are phenomenal!

  • Great Performance. I played this one once and I love it.

  • Ahh the piece that got us into MFA: National Concert Band Festival (along with a marched called Eagle Squadron). This is such an amazing piece.

  • We played this my sophomore year in high school , it was fun ! :)

  • Does anyone know where I can find a professional recording of this? I cannot seem to find one.

  • I play bass clarinet and the whole notes in this song are tough but soooo worth it cause it's sounds so lovely! Last night we had about 105 people playing this song at our concert and it was so epic! But on the second movement are guest conductor took it way faster then 184 but it still sound very cool! David manlanka and Andrew boysen(our guest conductor)are right now my top composers! To you the bands who have not played this song you need to play it!

  • @Makilovesu1 DUDE! Were you at the Science Hill/ETSU concert?! It sounds exactly like you were considering the Andrew Boysen thing. If you were, that was DEFINITELY the most epicest of epic concerts :D

  • @FlutisticMe not only was i at it i was playimg in that concert haha it was very epic and i enjoyed being able to work with etsu!

  • @Makilovesu1 Hun, we were both in it :p Heheh POOF! XD

  • @Makilovesu1 I play bass clarinet and we are starting this piece soon! I'm really excited for it!!!

  • I play 1st clarinet on this. The solo is gorgeous. Difficult to play in tune with muted cornet at the end. I commend this player for it.

I'm a little disappointed that the player here left out the second set of grace notes in measure 10...they really add to the line.

All in all, gorgeous. Amazing job.

  • @wiiman250 playing this at IMEA was amazing.

  • @blkandwitekeys It was definitely amazing to hear. I was in the group that played Mother Earth, which was demanding but another neat Maslanka piece. I think I'm starting to admire his music!

  • holy french horns

    in a good way lol

  • David Maslanka... is a musical genius. He is by far my favorite composer. We played this a few months back at The OMEA all-state high school honor band in Oklahoma. It was a thrilling piece to play.

  • @tah654 They played this at IMEA (Illinois) all-state too!

  • @wiiman250 Timothy Rhea, the director at Texas A&M, Was our guest director. He was awesome!

  • Personally, I loved it! The first time I heard this it sounded like the soundtrack to a great movie, like The Perfect Storm or Armageddon or something. My gosh, amazing piece! :D

  • This was my favorite movement...by far. It made me cry when I played it last semester.

  • rofl, my internet froze at 6:17 >.<

  • We played this piece before the U of I wind symphony, and it was the greatest feeling in the world, especially during the end of the second movement. Even more because he worked with us on it.

  • I LOVE the very low chords in this song. As a clarinet player, I love playing in the low register of my instrument as well as high. This gave me chills. (:

  • I like listening to this but I do not enjoy playing it.

  • so... no words= piece... its not a song... thanks.

  • I played this today with the all southern honor band in California and it was one of the most amazing songs ive ever played. Our conductor was gary green from Miami university, he is a very good friend of david and i found that how he describes david and how he described this song from david's point was that most amazing experience of my life. This song is absolutely amazing and will live on forever, its very well written and has so much passion hidden behind every note.

  • as a horn player, i much prefer the second movement, but overall i think this entire piece is awesome. i was very dissapointed when we stopped playing this in band class.

  • my Band director got to work with mr maslanka and cshe asked him how does he get ideas and he told her that they were all dreams that he has had this one is about a girl that is geting chased by a animal and gets eating the enitre piece is mvmt 1 and 2

  • This is perhaps the most beautiful song I've ever heard.

  • @wiiman250 My band director says people will be throwing babies at us too (no joke)...where are you from?

  • @trouble292 northern Illinois. I look forward to a day where I get to play this song again.

  • @trouble292 OMG OURS TOO he said that it is the test of the best band if you get babies thrown at you

  • this by far is the most emotional song ive ever have played,i cry in this while i played this, and please,Give Us This Day

  • just got the music today...

  • Which band recorded this?

  • not enough french horn at 6:50 ish. I go to West Boca High and some of our horns can rip and it's amazing.

  • @IForgotMyFirstAcount Lol, who is this?? It's Lucia. And heck yeah, our french horns are more than amazing. We're gonna destroy playing this song at states (:

  • @RockinPirate18 Jason :)

  • @RockinPirate18 I think the contras are amazing, they really make the piece =) they have some pretty sexy parts

  • @Beastlyshin00b Oh, I know! I wish I was playing contra for this song buttttt... I'm playing first clarinet!! :D My solo in the beginning... kind of nerve wrecking....

  • @RockinPirate18 Your solo will be great

  • @Beastlyshin00b Thanks, Carl. (I just found out it was you, btw... lol)

  • @RockinPirate18 Loo-sea-ahhhhh!!!! that's not carl..... </3

  • @j3r0ch i think it's like ryan george? or something like that

  • 2:30-3:45 is the best

  • any1 know composer of firefly?

  • played this in junior year of high school with october, march of symphonic metamorphisis, firefly in wind ensemble really fun

highly recommended firefly if you like this

  • if you like this song, i would highly recommend October by Eric Whitacre. It's my favorite song ever

  • @illiniballer4 I played October almost four years before I played this piece, and I immediately thought of October when I started this one.

  • @illiniballer4 we played that in our halftime show three years ago

  • @shefcod124 *two years ago

  • The first movement of this piece is one of the most emotional things I have ever had the privilege to play.

  • When I was in Wind Ensemble at Mundelein High School we did this for Superstate and I play tuba with one other person and the directors said me & the other guy had more sound and tone quality than nine tubas. lol. Made my day. :D

  • @Pinkfloyder15 dude We're playing this at Libertyville High School right now!

  • Easily one of my favorite pieces. I loved playing it.

  • I love this piece sooo much. We're playing it right now (: Both movements of this song give me chills. It's that amazing.

  • Who is performing this??

  • such a great piece :D

  • Who is this performed by?

  • This is better than the recording I have on my iPod at least, it's more in tune and more pleasurable to listen to.....(sounds weird haha)

  • I've heard way better ive actually played it. 2009 fba state recording flanagan high school wind orchestra thats a real recording n 10x better

  • Maslanka came to my school in La Mesa, CA and watched us performed this and gave us a lecture it was amazing!

  • we played this last year. i miss it so much. it gives me chills. also the 2nd movement. it's great.

  • this is one of the better recordings I've heard

  • Maslanka lives in my town, Missoula, Montana, and his song, "Hell's gate" was orrigionally meant for my school's band to play.

The name of my school is "HellGate," which makes sense :)

I met him today in band, he came in to help us with, "Heart Songs" which we will be performing tommarow.

    SO epic! :D

  • @xXDJToastXx I... envy... you...

  • we are playing it in may so i have it stuck in my head everyday

  • this is one of those pieces that's just so awesome, people throw babies at those who play it. For those that don't know, that's a good thing.

  • @tj888334 our band received many a flying infant while playing this. Twas distracting yet honorable.

  • @wiiman250

Let them throw their first born!!

  • @WiiMan19952004 It would be but the highest honor

  • I love the blend in the clarinet and trumpet solo in the beginning.

  • We played this song in the Texas All-State Concert Band this year. I played 3rd part clarinet which is more downgraded than 2nd in both movements and I was very upset I didn't get 1st part, but after a few days, it didn't matter to me cuz the music's impact was so phenomenal. I still sing the song to myself and think about it everyday, and we performed more than a month ago!

  • I just performed this last week!

In fact, today I got tor rehearse with Maslanka himself.- performing his 7th Symphony! He's soo soft spoken!

  • @somepianist WOW

  • David is one of my favorite composer! He is such a wonderful musician and a great respectful gentleman! He is making music with his heart and soul!

  • I totally agree with pacman80500, the first movement is very moving. The second clarinet part does have a lot of whole notes but just listen the first movement and you can tell that it is much deeper musically than the second movement.

  • I don't know what is wrong with all these comments. I pray to God that none of you become a professional musician because this first movement is an amazing piece of music and for all of you who think this movement sucks or is boring try actually listening to it and you will hopefully see the power it brings. I play trombone and I like the 2nd movement too but you people need to learn to be real musicians and love the fast as well as the slow. Do not come to Stetson. You wont fit in.

  • hahaha,...

they just haven't learned how to "be a person" ;-)

  • @pacman80500 I play trombone too! I played this in January with an amazing band, blew the audience out of their chairs. Maslanka is one of my favorite composers to play... pure genius

  • @pacman80500

I agree. The first movement nearly brings me to tears. How can one not enjoy it?

  • @pacman80500 My high school is playing this, I love it, and I want to go to Stetson (tentatively) What more could one ask for?!! Hahahaha

  • @pacman80500 I really hope you don't truly think like that. Yes, a good musician listens, enjoys, and understands contrasting pieces (fast or slow), but also a good musician respects the differences in a people's opinions of music. Good musicians embrace the fact that everyone has their own opinions and interpretations of different pieces. You have successfully made yourself, as long as Stetson, look like a jackass.

  • i played this my jr year of highschool in my wind symphony. 1st chair alto. David Maslanka came in and guest Directed xD it was awesome.

  • im playing this on 3rd trombone its fun... its not hard in movement 1 but the second is sooo cool!!

  • I played this in Wyoming All State band last year. I was first chair bassoon. I have to say that the second movement was way better

  • The first movement sets up the second movement. They each have their value.

  • My HS band played this three years ago for BOA National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis. We were supposed to have a rehearsal with Mr. Maslanka, but he was snowed in and couldn't get to our HS. I played 2nd clarinet and man was I getting tired of all the whole notes in this movement. Second movement was awesome!

  • Oh yay! I was the in the percussion section of the group that premiered this piece! I was the second mallet part, I don't remember much except how much of a ripping marimba part the second movement is. lol

  • Beautiful and amazing, my wind ensemble is playing this

  • Timpani part's hard but it's so much fun to play!

  • I respect David Maslanka and all but I LOATHE playing this movement. I have bass clarinet part and because of all the whole notes I'm holding, I start getting asthma attacks and the room begins to change colors. But it sounds so mysterious and cool and starts to build up tension for Movement II.

  • right? and its like hold for twenty measures. Then right after all the low long notes, theres freaking runs in the second movement haha
