Solomon Burke needs no explanation or excuses... Gillian can sing with or without anybody... David is one of the best acoustical musicians today... Good songwriter too...
I agree that Welch and Rawlings aren't in the spotlight, they play as supporting artists in this piece. Burke's good, having only listened to this performance, but I don't know how well the artists voices mesh here.. I think it could be improved.
Check out Gillian Welch's and David Rawlings' BBC performance of their song "Look at Miss Ohio" for a performance I consider really great. Another top highlight for me is "Throw me a rope" (a.k.a "The way it will be", but the Throw me... video is gr8.
I was totally shocked about the sudden death of Solomon Burke. I could not believe it, because I met him last year in March personal. I knew Solomon since many years and he was for me not just any man or friend, no, he was something very special for me. I thank everyone, who sending some Videos from him to this chanel. Please don`t forget Solomon and his music. He was the only King of Soul. Best wishes and don` forget Solomon's words: You're not alone.
King and queen of BLUEGRASS????? Hate to break it to you but the King of Bluegrass title belongs to one person-- Jimmy Martin, and as talented as Gillian Welch is, she's about as bluegrass as Pete Seeger. Solomon Burke had more soul in his left foot than either of these two, who were fortunate enough to share the stage with him.
Let's keep it real folks. Solomon steals the show here, and Gillian and Dave are just along for the ride.
Solomon is good but we should give credit to the two supporting him... whatever their genre that we classify them in... they are modern day folksingers and David is one of the best guitarists in this generation.

@shellacster you are not right and let me say this there are plenty out there that have soul and can play bluegrass do u think they get on the stage thinking they are better then the rest then you are an Idiot, that is not what music is about
MusicFann. Thank you so much for sharing this. At first glance I did not expect artists from such different mucial traditions to blend and complement each other so well or perhaps my expectations were previously too low. This performance is testament to all their talents.
@didi1213 This is from a televison concert recorded at Nashville's Belcourt Theatre, September 25th 2006. The concert was later released on DVD as "Live in Nashville" on the Snapper Music label.
going through my music collection and stumbled on the studio version of this...came here and found a smile...thanks for the smile mr. burke and rest easy.
Brilliant! Unfortunately, I truly did not 'discover' Mr./Rev Burke until after 'Don't Give Up on Me'. Nonetheless, a beautiful-thunderous voice. God bless you sir.
I recently drove from New York to Denver and ended up listening to Nashville for almost half of the drive. Paired with Gill and Dave he is just plain heavenly.
His record "Nashville" was the best album of the decade! "King" Soloman will be sorely missed! R.I.P.
An earlier post referred to Gillain and Rawlings as the "King and Queen of Bluegrass"?!?!?! How utterly misguided!!! Bluegrass?! Not even close! At least Rawlings appears to have showered and put on clean clothes for this show! Bluegrass?!? Sheesh...
@JAPRYDER Bill Monroe, Stanley Bros, Jimmy Martin, Del McCoury are bluegrass, Welch and Rawlings are NOT, and they would tell you the same thing. I could not let the "king and queen" comment lie without comment. I think they;re good at what they do, but their general appearance/hygiene (see photos on "Machine" record) is a bit too "tragic" for me. Is this "tossing"? I make a great salad!!
What an AWESOME sound from these three! They should all three feel blessed!

Well, he plays a Jimmy Martin line @1:31...but they're not the king and queen of bluegrass though they're damn darn good.
