Anybody who's complaining about Chris Thile's voice needs to understand that he is one of the greatest, if not THE greatest instrumentalist of this generation, but he does the best that he can with HIS voice. His voice is different from Dan Tyminski's or Steve Gulley's and I think he does rather nicely with what he has. As for Tony, He revolutionized flatpicking thirty years before anybody else even thought about doing the things he was doing. This is an amazing combination!!
I would hate to be the other guitar player on stage and have to solo after Rice. If I take a break before and he destroys me after I'd be like "Hey what do you want, it's Tony Rice". But to solo after is like saying "Pretty good Mr. Rice, but watch this"
@crrudin Man, you're exactly right. Don't mind folks being so enthusiastic about any particular musician ( I have my own heros) but to say any certain one is the greatest or best...C'mon. It really boils down to personal taste overall and is so subjective you'd have to qualify why you'd say it. Some are better at certain styles...apples and oranges, right? So it gets very silly ranting. Admire each for what they bring to the music overall. To say one's the greatest insults other greats.
@TruegrassBoy I had a mandolin teacher who once said to me that Tony Rice was the "just about the best bluegrass singer." It's taken me ten years to realize how wise he really was on that one. It's too damn bad that Tony blew his voice out.
Our friend Steve Gillette does this song well; his own take on it.

@gunny7147236 The greatest instrumentalist of this generation?? Oh please......

I don't care much for this singer. With his style he should be fronting a boy band, not a bluegrass band.

@md65000 You are quite right--Chris Thile's voice is not a bluegrass voice. it is good for other contexts, i think, but not this one.

Chris Thile has chops, but he doesn't respect the music. He wants it to be about him.
