  • Somebody get him a glass of water!

  • Make fun of this if you will, it shows your immaturity and illustrates what is wrong with the world today: people take our freedoms for grated, pay lip service love thy neighbor on Sundays (Christians) and then violate the ten commandments the rest of the week.

I am not a religious nut, but I do think there is good in remembering what this country stands for, and we must recapture our legacy.

  • Jimmy Stewart was a famous dolphin right?

  • JamesStewart was a great actor and great man love all his movies

  • Courage, Honor, Ethics and Integrity, have too long been lost from the words and values of the Hollywood Entertainment industry, so eager for ratings, and money, they destroyed everything of value to our country.

  • Jefferson Smith lives! Ron Paul 2012

  • I prefer the Homer Simpson remake

  • He was so incredibly cute.

  • oh my i love this part in the movie...before this part when he is reading the letters and newspapers almost made me cried. James Stewart is such an amazing actor!

  • James Stewart for President!

  • watch this in my government class and this is one of the best political movies i've ever seen

  • Stewart for president

  • Stewart should have ran for president he probably would have won probably would have been pretty good president

  • 9 plus thousands of ordinary people watched this film. Most definitely the greatest political film ever made. Jimmy Stewart was superb as Jefferson Smith.

  • this movie presents everything what's happening in politics in general.

  • I'll have to watch this now! Thanks!

  • WHOSE LINE!!!!!!!!

  • Like him or not I think the only honest politician in Washington that doesn't change his opinions to fit the crowd he's infront of is Ron Paul

  • This is easily the greatest movie ever made. Nothing even comes close.

  • guaaaaaaaaaaaapooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ¡¡¡

  • I LOVE JAMES STEWART.

  • No one in Washington cares this much anymore or has this much passion...

  • We need to empty out the White House and fill them with a bunch of Mr. Smiths!

  • @CrazyRabidPony ... AGENT SMITH!?

  • @misterkevinoh That's another guy we can put into the White House. :D

  • He is so good!

  • @ILUVLUCYDESI : Hi -- I wanted to say I totally agree with you about Jimmy Stewart's acting ability...I think there is one actor who fits every criteria you laid out...Mr. Michael Vartan ("ALIAS," "HawthoRNe")...I have followed him for many years now and I think he is so very subtle that he doesn't seem to be acting...If you've never seen it, go get "ALIAS" Season 4/Episode 4: "Ice"...and I'll show you what I mean...

  • I often think James Stewart doesn't get the credit he deserves for being such an extraordinary actor because he was such a nice person. Perhaps we don't elevate him as much because he wasn't a strutting, arrogant, superiority complex sufferer. He has that ordinary 'everyday man' image, but yet looking at this reminds me that every (yes every!) strutting, arrogant , S.C.S. actor I can think of , and they are many, would have had rings acted around them by our Jimmy .

  • Golly gosh he was hot! Shucks, gee! x

  • Una de las más grandes escenas en la historia del cine. :)

  • Such an amazing scene! :) This movie is AMAZING!

  • I adore Jimmy Stewart.

  • My god, it's just a dream, only a dream to think that today movies such as this and performances such as this can be delivered.

  • James Stewart was one of the greatest actors ever

  • how could anyone dislike this? Nazis on Youtube?

  • Maybe the last time an honest man made it to Washington?

  • they just don't make em like this anymore. man, i wish they did.

  • Back when one could still at least imagine heroics in politics.

  • What do u think happens after we die?

  • @sluggo06 You get reincarnated as half an Oreo

  • hollywood these days seem to fail as 92% of them in the past 2 years were either remakes and reimaginings...all seem to not give a good moral meaning...its all about justin bieber and hot babes...

  • Acting was so different back then. It seemed so formal and by the books, but Stewart was a master of the game on any scale

  • @PulpFictionized

Jimmy wasn't racist. John Ford tricked him into saying something about Woody Strode acting like Uncle Remus while filming THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE. John Ford could be kind of a dick.

  • I'm going to say just one thing..BERNIE SANDERS FOR PRESIDENT!!!

  • I think Jimmy is the greatest actor in the history of film!

  • @JuanMacready Regarding the similarity of the two films, while the two were both very alike in a number of aspects, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington actually was based on an (unpublished) novel by Lewis R. Foster. Mr. Deeds Goes to Town was based on a totally different work of writing.

  • Why would seven people dislike this? Is something Jimmy said that offended? I can't fucking understand you people!!!

  • For this particular scene, he was unable to fake a strained voice so they poured some mercury compound down his throat to make his voice hoarse.

  • "Lost causes are the only causes worth fighting for". That is so true.

Living in America today, I suspect that a lot of us are going to find that is true sooner rather than later.

  • There's nothing hotter than disheveled Jimmy Stewart.

  • @babymoondancer You are so right!

  • I think in this one scene Stewart basically fulfilled every actor's dream. That he didn't win an Oscar is simply ridiculous. I suppose if it had been any year but 1939 ... *sigh*

  • @90lysander So, so true. But at least he was rewarded for the Philadelphia Story the next year. Both so wonderful. :)

  • @Classic1940s Ehhh ... that was a consolation prize, as far as I'm concerned. Apparently Stewart thought so too.

  • @90lysander Haha, yeah, that's sort of what I've gathered from some things I've read/seen, too. But either way, his overall career (even just up to that early point) really did seem to be exceedingly eligible for such a prize. :)

  • @Classic1940s I would certainly agree with that. It's just that I'm not a huge fan of The Philadelphia Story, and as this is probably his all-time best performance (and therefore, one of THE all-time best), I wish he had one the award for this. Again, I think if it had been any year but '39, when Gone with the Wind reigned supreme at the Oscars, he would have won.

  • its actually a good movie for its time. watched it in civics class today... great movie.

  • ryan stiles !!!!

  • hallucinant!

  • this is truly the golden age of cinematography in the US history.. so sad to see the crap they make these days when its only a hand full of movies that seem ok.

  • @mmmodafoca You can tell something about America from its movies. These such films talked about America's promise and what it could be. You saw some of that optimism even with the corporate corruption of the 80s. People still believed they had a chance. You don't see that anymore. Instead of optimism, all you get from movies is bitterness and fingerpointing. All problems, no solutions.

  • @mmmodafoca Well... We also put out a literal fuckton amount more movies now then we did back then. It also would be rare to see a movie, now everyone goes out to watch movies.

  • wouldnt that be hard if u held the senate floor for 23 hours and u need to talk about the topic man he is good but he passed out !

  • With his smoldering eyes, soft, full lips and angular body, the youthful Jimmy Stewart was the hottest looking actor ever. No present-day movie star comes anywhere close. Go to :07 and hit pause. Makes me weak in the knees.

  • Awesome!

  • in the next scene he kill president? am I wrong?

  • @chrihern in the simpsons, yes

  • I just saw the movie, but it is now on m list of favorites

  • I prefer the mel gibson version

  • My favourite actor

  • James Stewart is one of the best american actors of all time !!!

  • memorable

  • @JuanMacready please tell me thats sarcasm

  • @hobbitandwife Mr Deeds was far better than this crap movie with the racist Stewart.

  • @JuanMacready ...wow...

  • @JuanMacready You are neither ready, nor a Mac. And certainly no Juan.

  • I want to go back in time and ask him to marry me....... <3

  • @JuliaDarling You like him huh? :D

  • @JuanMacready Actually, it was supposed to BE a Mr Deeds sequel, but the way couldn't be paved for Gary Cooper to reprise his role as Longfellow Deeds, so Stewart got hired as Deeds with the name changed to Jefferson Smith,

  • @vinidici Having trouble with posting successfully!

Any extreme harsh behavior by Stewart would have got him blackballed by the public while he was still in the industry, as happens to all the other celebs who behave badly. A fringe accusation by associates who didn't like Stewart's right wing politics doesn't seem serious enough to most people to disown Jimmy Stewart.

  • @JuanMacready Stewart had his foibles and fallibilities like anyone else, but if he were even a tiny fraction as bad as you always claim he was, all that stuff (if it were true) would have come out about him and tainted his reputation years before he died. Most folks, world wide, will never see it your way, and for good reason: the racism charges are unproveable and most likely false.

  • one of the best in the history of cinema... cinema doesn't get bigger than this... plain simple rule... love thy neighbors...

  • Excuse my language but Frank Capra was a fucking genius and Jimmy Stewart was incredibly talented. One of my absolute favorite actors. I wish we had great movies like this again.

  • Oh my gosh.....what I would do to have been in the same room as Jimmy Stewart. In my humble opinion, there's rarely anyone in the film industry anymore as talented as he.

  • I like what this film is trying to get across to the viewers

Its a real shame Capra can't live forever making these sorts of films..It's a wonderful life is my all time favorite, this and 'it happened one night' are beautifully made films to . if you haven't seen them then you're truly missing out my friend.

  • There needs to be a revolution in Hollywood, some one needs to make great movies again.

  • love this movie

  • The independent senator from Vermont Bernie Sanders is the modern day Mr. Smith, he's not financed by corporate funds so he's probably the only senator that isn't in someone's back pocket

  • Ron Paul is a modern day real Jefferson Smith!

  • @BeadStallcup you're hilarious! nice joke :)

  • he is so cute!

  • he sounds like batman in the dark knight

  • Frank Capra and Jimmy Stewart would be laughed out of Hollywood today and maybe that tells us more about our society than film making. We miss you Frank and Jimmy.

  • @owings64 My God, that's so very true. I do miss them, too.

  • Uh...

How Jimmy didn't win the Oscar for Best Actor, I dunno.

  • This was the movie that made me fall in love with Jimmy Stewart

  • Omgsh he was so HANDSOME! and he put real emotions in his character.

  • James Stewart= Best actor ever!

Maybe some of those kids on Nickelodeon should watch his movies, because they all need some lessons >_>

  • love this movie. Its not the acting or the plot or any of that. May seem corny I guess but it shows the potential of this country, like what its supposed to be. I think it appeals to so many because we see the corruption everyday, the machine, and if we just had one man standing up for the people we would in turn have a voice. I have my idea of who that guy is but i wonder if anyone else sees a politician that is like Jeff Smith?

  • Did we know...

Jimmy Stewart flew B17s in the early years of ww2 and later became a Squadron Commander. He flew to Schwienfert Germany, 60 planes and 600 men were lost.....his last combat flight was 1966, on a B52 over Vietnam.

He was a decorated Brig. General.

When he enlisted at the beginning of the war he was rejected, went back and rejected again, third time he talked the clerk into letting him pass the exam to get in....He was a big star before he enlisted...STUD.

  • Ah, Jimmy. WAY ahead of his time.

  • TROLLIN'

  • Best. filibuster. ever. 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, are you listening???!!!

  • to what??

  • Today the GOP just threatens filibuster. They don't have the ability to actually do what is shown here. They could not stand and talk for hours like is shown. If they did voters would see how brain dead the GOP has become. They offer no solutions.

  • was there ever a time when politicians weren't bums?

  • Wow, even though he wasn't even born yet, he does a really good Nicholas Cage impression.

  • Gosh, berner, that's a very interesting view point. I'm a big fan of both actors, and have never really noticed that before. It's in the eyes, for sure.

  • Quoting Imdb: "In 1942, when a ban on American films was imposed in German-occupied France, the title theaters chose Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) for their last movie before the ban went into effect. One Paris theater reportedly screened the film nonstop for thirty days prior to the ban."

  • When this film first came out, many people in the political arena critisized the film for inaccurately accusing them of being corrupt, and feared that the film would make foreign countries believe American's government was faulty.

Ironically, many fascist countries banned this movie for fear that it showed Democracy works.

  • yeah i didn't know at the time that the character has been talking for 23 hours, bc i only had seen this clip. Then, i saw the movie and i understand why his voice was like that

  • Every elected Congressman and Senator should be required to watch this movie and remember who they represent - The American people !

  • @steinway21 : Or they could just reside to "Dumb and Dumber". Maybe go visit a trailer park, Idaho or something.

  • @polaroidsky your dumb

  • I love this man

  • i think maybe jimmy was sick during this part of the movie bc of his voice.

  • I don't think so. If he *was* sick, it would be quite a convenient coincidence...... but at this point in the film his character has been talking non-stop for days on end and I think it's just really good voice acting from Stewart

  • It wasn't just "good voice acting" that got Jimmy sounding like that. For authenticity, he wiped his vocal chords down with mercury--MERCURY--every few takes to get them to swell up and sound scratchy.

That's straight out of Frank Capra's autobiography. Jimmy Stewart really went the extra mile for his performance.

Interesting thing that he never developed any problems later in life, but the scaredy-cat government banned mercury-based thermometers because they were "dangerous."

  • He's the best actor in the world. I'm writing my American history report on him, and this is an INCREDIBLE movie. If you're ever planning on becoming an actor, this is the man you want to pay attention to.

  • Even though the everyday film-watcher tends to love Stewart, the film establishment and film snobs tend to look down on him, or at least overlook him, in terms of acting talent. In truth, I think Stewart was one of the greatest actors in the history of film.

  • @Ashiman12 Check the bar scene before he gets to the bridge during"it's a Wonderful Life", his acting is amazing.

  • Capra is genuis!!!

  • 'Well I'm not late!'

  • In his heart, Jimmy won the oscar for Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.

  • his voice is soooo sexy!!!

  • ROFLMFAOOL!!!

  • Woodrow Wilson was liberal and was an extreme racist so liberal doesn't mean your automatically excluded from being racist that is oversimplified statement like all liberals are stupid which is false. General statements such as these should be avoided.

  • Stewart enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a private before Pearl Harbor, earlier in 1941 (after twice failing his physical for being underweight).

By war's end, Stewart had risen to the rank of colonel and been awarded two DFCs and an Air Medal with three Oak Clusters. In 1959 he attained the rank of Brigadier General in the USAF Reserves.

This brief thumbnail hardly scratches the surface of this distinguished American, actor - and human being. Fans would do well to look up his biography.

  • Jimmy Stewart = amazing.

  • best movie ever. Such a pessamesticly optomistic film...Jimmy Stewart's acting...just amazing

  • Great actor, great american, great person in general.

  • James Stewart was a great actor. This is my favorite movie.

  • @Mi11H0US3 not my favorite but i still LOVE it. This is my favorite scene. a runnerup has to be jimmy stewarts face when he sees the boy rangers present him with the suitcase. it still makes me emotional

  • If you want to call him a racist, which he wasn't, be my guest. But if you are going to call him a racist, then look at it in the context of the society in which he lived in.

Never has there been an actor, excluding Henry Fonda, who has given the American people such a feeling of hope in man kind. His wholesome movies, which are riveted with his good nature and unshakable moral core, teach people what it means to "do what's right."

  • his voice is rare

  • Hardly.

  • Jimmy Stewart was not a racist and surely not a Nazi....he went and fought Nazi's in WWII. Also, his closest friend was Henry Fonda who was a lifelong liberal and would have not stood for any bigotry around him.

As for this scene....It is Jimmy's best work and it always brings up deep emotions everytime I watch the movie.

  • STOP FIGHTING PEOPLE whats the point I SAY I,M A BRIT FROM A FREE SOCIETY THE RIGHT TOO FREE SPEECH I LIVE IN THE USA SAME GOES HERE so it doesn,t really matter GREAT SCENE dlpine71 aka as dave from a great great movie ty

  • A fantastic film clip. Thanks for uploading and thanks to dlpine71 for sharing. 5***** x

  • one of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite movies!! lost causes are the only one's worth fighting for!! five stars!! and, thanks for posting!!

  • I see Senator ron paul in this man... this movie was more than amazing.

  • Jimmy Stewart died 12 years ago today. Mr. Smith fought for lost causes, and Jimmy fought for America. James Maitland Stewart was a Great American War Hero. He was loved by so many. He is truly missed.

  • His face after he read those telegrams killed me! I felt so bad I wanted to cry! Jimmy Stewart's amazing and Mr. Smith knows what makes this country great!

  • Great movie. Can you imagine what American politics with today's media would be like without talk radio or the Internet?

  • AHH!!! James Stewert is the best!!!

  • happy bday jimmy

    i will always love ya

  • This actually brought tears to my eyes. The fact that this movie, made 70 years ago, is still so powerful is a testament to the incredible acting talent of Jimmy Stewart. Absolutely amazing. He makes you believe in the American Dream again, doesn't he?

  • jimmy stewart actually went to the doctor and asked him to make him sick - give him a cold - so that he would be more convincing in the filibuster scenes. it really worked! i think this is one of the greatest movies of all time!

  • What a great performance! James Stewart is extraordinary. I love his movies.

  • Because of scenes like this one, J Edgar Hoover believed Frank Capra, the director of this movie, to be a communist.

  • Excellent, powerful movie. James Stewart is the best!

  • Grow up little boy..

  • This is what America is all about.

  • was

  • actually, you are incorrect sir. Dr. King was neither a Democrat or Republican because he believed that black Americans should not devote their political power to one party because that party might become complacent and not fight for their collective rights. It's in Dr. King's autobiography, should you feel the need to read about someone before you post again.

    Thank you for your time.

As for Rosa Parks, I did not know her political affiliation.

  • A great movie, but a fantasy-the game is rigged in Washington, and real Americans don't stand a chance-too many "Taylor machines" are running the show.

  • this is what i love about old films...they didn't have to blow things up or fill the screen with sex...James Stewart only had to stand up and speak and we are all pulled in

  • my favorite movie of all time...there is only

one Jimmy Stewart..He is beyond magnificent

here is this role..Made me love politics...

    also I am a dem,,but realdeal59 is very

    correct in what they wrote...

  • A very young Jimmy Stewart here. He was still starring in movies 25 years after Mr. Smith was produced.

  • LOVE JAMES STEWART!!!

  • He was fighting for a great cause. Go Jimmy, go.

  • Jimmy Stewart and the filibuster beatdown!

  • This is a really good movie, especially for its time period, the ending feels a little hollow but still a great movie...

  • Mangina, No I don't think so, he was a starting guard on the 1934 Notre Dame basketball team! Prove me wrong, failing to sight your sourses means you are sighting hear say and falsehoods! By the way hows that hot mommy of your?

  • Have you lost your mind? This movie merely stands for honesty, patriotism, and determination. The fact that there were black busboys is a reflection of the reality at the time. One of Mr. Smiths own speeches included "freedom for every race, ethnicity, etc". If you can't get past your racist bigotry and see this movie for what it is, a simple good-hearted man vs liars, then thats your problem.

  • MLK was nothing but a sound byte. he is famous and looked fondly on because they have a sound byte of one of his speeches. he, like JFK, is a nothing in american history. you are just cranky because you haven't had your juice.

  • Jmarquise, you are correct in saying that MLK jr was more of a Libertarian then either a Republican or a Democrat. Considering that I hold a number of degrees in history, the Mangina you are trying to debate does no play fair. Mangina is a gutless ball less pussy! I know history and Mangina knows shit!

  • Mangin as a proven LIAR you know nothing about the American political system. And your ignorance of our nations history is monumental! You are a proven LIAR and I proved you as such. So how is your mommy doing you worhtless after birth? Still faling to provide any proof to back your here say up!

  • Is there not a single video on this movie that actually shows anything past the point where Smith collapses? The movie continues after that, you know, and I'd kinda like to see it.

  • @Jurassic0Al well, buy a dvd, then. they have it in shops, you know.

  • one of my favorite movies ever!

  • ...Wow. He was hot. And a great actor.

  • the best

  • James Maitland Stewart. He is the greatest actor ever. He will always be no# 1 on my list.

  • the greatest actor of all time!!

  • He is my idol, this is so crazy, I just watched this part like 2 hours ago.. He is a godly actor.
