I so loved these updates ! Ares 1-X launched !! I´m at a lost as to why the Constellation is gone ! It worked !! I was so looking forward to seeing the flight test of the Ares V in 2018 !!
No need to finish Ares I as the EELVs can do it's job for a lot less. But the work done so far needs to be redirected to an HLV such as Shuttle-C or Direct.
This would not be much more expensive then shutting down the program and killing all contracts.
I think the Jupiter 246 could be flying by 2014 if the decision is made now.
This vehicle has two RSRMs unchanged from STS, four SSMEs and 6 RL-10s.
Shame about the programme's cancellation. Now all that NASA can do is continue making the most of the last penny in the budget for the fiscal year 2010.
Cancelled or not, I still think it should be completed up to the point where it can carry people and then mothballed or shelved. could be a handy asset..
Its important to show progress, because constellations competition has been busy spreading the rumor that NASA has been sitting on its laurels all these years.
The Obama vision is about what states and what companies get money. Exploration has very little to do with it.
Thanks for the report. Even if this program doesn't go through, I hope the new technology developed during this program is continued. How elseare we going to manage to build a Heavy Launch Vehicle?
Therer is still some hope. Lockheed is pulling Orion development in house, so hopefully we will see it in the commercial sector. I am pretty sure that we wont See Ares I/V, however congress is pushing had for an SD-HLV that will use 5 segment boosters, J-2X, and Avionics all from the Constellation program (will use smaller tank diameter though) While it wont be the original program, we will still save a lot, so support those in Congress fighting for BEO exploration!
Anybody who thinks that Ares had any chance of actually taking off doesn't know anything about Aerospace. I could have told you in 2006 Ares wouldn't have flown because the Bush administration cut funding for NASA in their proposals.
Thanks all for your comments. The Constellation Program and Ares Projects is still active, and the team is hard at work developing exploration technologies and hardware. It's the President's 2011 budget that cancels Ares.
@AresTV So although the programme has been cancelled the money is still being used to fund the research and development into the Constellation programme. I suppose your just making the most of every last penny in the budget allocated to a machine that won't be flying to the Moon, now that the Orion spacecraft is to become a lifeboat for the ISS. What are NASA's plans for the future in manned space flight. It might have money to make new tech but will it ever be used in one way or another?
@joachim2464 Constellation isn't canceled until Congress says it's canceled. They preemptively passed a law in 2009(?) prohibiting the president from making changes like what has happened. The battle is going on right now.
Common misconception. Obama doesn't have the power to cancel Constellation. That would be illegal. All he did was propose a budget that would cancel the program, but the final decision is still in the hands of congress and the budget appropriation committee.
No one knows. The process on reworking the budget proposal starts in June or July this year, but it could drag on for months and if a consensus isn't reached by the beginning of fiscal year 2011 (1st of October) Constellation could continue, because the budget hasn't been approved.
I am rootin for you. But it seems lately that there has been little new on constellation progress after ares 1-x. Then i heard the 1-y test fligth is cancelled. Has the program been slowed down?
Idk if you meant that question for me. Just so you know I'm not part of the Constellation program or NASA for that matter. Again, nothing is canceled officially. As far as I know Ares I-Y is still 2 years away, provided the new budget is rejected. Don't get your hopes up though. Constellation might survive, but I'm not sure about Ares I.

Again, good luck on getting Constellation back. It's wonderful to see all the progress that's been made in spite of the President's proposal.
