  • Again I am reminded how much of a beast Robinson was.

  • By the way, do people here remember that the reason Minnesota was ranked 18th was from beating an overranked Purdue? In 2005, Purdue was a preseason dark horse to win the Big Ten and ranked pretty high going into the Minnesota game with everyone asking "Is Purdue for real?" (the answer turned out to be no, Purdue started off 2-0, lost six straight, their sixth being to Penn State, then finished a more respectable 5-6). After this game, people found out that it was Penn State that was for real.

  • @MVillani1985 Hey! We have talked about Minnesota under Glen Mason. This win was sweet, because Penn State finally put a whipping on Glen and the Gophers. During Glen's 10-year run at Minnesota, every other game against Penn State was either a win for the Gophers or a close-game loss for the Gophers. I was cheering for Penn State, of course, but Mason outcoached JoePa several teams. Glen is 60 and is hoping to coach again. I hope he gets a job. He has been talked about for Indiana.

  • @gymman1031 Well, 1998 was a whipping too, but 1998 and 2005 were about it. 1997 was a close game that foreshadowed Michigan knocking PSU out of the #1 spot. Glen Mason could probably turn Indiana into a middle of the pack team with occasional shots at the Rose Bowl for the first time since they had Lee Corso as coach. Currently, Kirk Ferentz is another coach whose Iowa teams have been a thorn in Penn State's side, even though PSU laid a whooping on Iowa in 1999 and 2007.

  • @MVillani1985 Well, even after all the coaching changes in 2010, Glen Mason still doesn't have a job. I say he gets one in time. And, to tell you the truth, I think the coaching jobs Glen did against Penn State were even more impressive than Kirk Ferentz' jobs. Kirk doesn't get lots of super highly-ranked players, but he definitely gets more talent than Mason ever got at Minnesota. And, Penn State beat Minnesota, 27-17 in 1998. While it was a double-digit win, it still wasn't a wipeout.

  • @gymman1031 27-17 was a lot closer than the talent differential between the two teams.

  • @gymman1031 That's very true, Glen Mason had a way of keeping it close with Penn State. He also had a way of scrounging out close wins. The talent levels from 2006 to 2007 weren't much different, but the 6-7 2006 Gophers won a lot of tight games. The most dramatic example of Glen Mason's coaching job came in a loss. Penn State finished 9-3 (would have been 11-1 or 10-2 if Enis and Jurevicius hadn't been suspended) but only beat Minnesota (3-8) 16-15 after being down 15-3.

  • @MVillani1985 Yep! That 1997 16-15 win, as you said, shook Penn State's confidence going into the Michigan game. Kudos to Penn State for making the comeback. But, there was one play that saved Penn State. Minnesota had a 3rd and short late and fumbled. Had they made the first down or even made a good punt, they very well might have won. Have I ever told you before that, class act JoePa went into the Gophers' locker room after the game. And, he said, for all to hear, "The better team lost today."

  • @gymman1031 Well that, plus injuries to Aaron Harris and a few other key players helped set the tone of the rest of the season. Penn State before the Minnesota game was a much different team than after in 1997. And with 1999, that safety Derek Fox is probably my least favorite Penn State player of all time.

  • @MVillani1985 Yep! You are right that the 1997 Penn State Football team looked much better before the Minnesota game than after it. And, while they went downhill in 1999 after the Minnesota loss, they weren't as impressive BEFORE that game as they were before the Minnesota game in 1997. Penn State was undefeated and #2 going into the Minnesota game in 1999. However, they seemed to have a glass jaw, had some ugly wins, and seemed to play with matches. The Pitt, Miami, and Purdue wins were ugly.

  • @MVillani1985 Yep! Glen Mason studied Penn State before that 1999 game. And he figured that Derek Fox was the player to exploit. Boy, was he right! That Minnesota QB had loads of passing yards.

  • @MVillani1985 By the way, Glen Mason's most brilliant coaching moving in the 1999 game was figuring out that Penn State had a defensive back who had serious issues. He totally had his team exploit that, and, against a very good defense, they got lots and lots of yards.

  • @MVillani1985 Glen hit his ceiling at Minnesota because he couldn't recruit. But that dude sure did a lot with what he had to work with. And, if he went to Indiana, he would probably get lots of 2* and lower players. But he sure can coach, he sure can take a struggling program and lead them to lots of wins, and I bet he is hungrier than ever.

  • I was there for this game. I was there for the Ohio State game. I was there for the entire season, and I'll be damned if anyone tells me that wasn't one of the best times I have had in my life. I haven't missed a home game since 2003, and haven't worn any jersey but 31 since 2005. Penn state proud baby.
