  • Why don't you make more videos, they are quite telling and relaxed reviews, i watched almost all of them

  • Comment removed

  • great playing as usual john! have you by chance ever tried the g.e. smith signature telecaster?

  • The best looking finish by far on a tele. I'm gonna get one of these once I get the money

  • Almost like a banjo sound at times. So many sounds from this guitar!

  • you can certainly tell when youre playing the bridge pickup in that thing. Just grabbed a roland cube 30 off craigslist for 40 and have been using it with my tele. I love the sound of the roland compared to my old mustang I amp

  • Anyone who compares Fender Telecasters to ESP guitars need a good smacking.

  • in this video and in the other about the telecaster, i hear that this guitar is mostly for country music, but i've always linked this guitar to funk and fusion. i was thinking on buying one, but now i am not so shure. can anyone give me some advice?

    thank you

  • @Shishimu

Theese guitars are versitile :P But they do excell at country, but you can play blues, funk and Rock N Roll on them, no problem :) I even know a guy who uses his standard telecaster for some heavyli tuned down metal stuff.. But then again, its all in the player :-)

  • just wondering what your settings are on the amp and if you're using any pedals. thanks

  • Clean channel with tone controls straight up.

  • Played one of these before.... amazing

  • Really great reviews , we get to hear a lot of guitar play and feel the sound , as well as much usefull info. You are quite precise and easy to understand. Only thing that you might consider telling more about price/value relation. Good work

  • yihaa, cowboy

  • I would like to kick that ass too 0:52

  • man look at this hipster and his ironic hat jesus

  • When you pick up a tele its sounds great. Its your technique to, it enhances the inherit tone. Like to see more chicken pickin John!

  • Hal Leonard is soon to release a DVD that has 80 of my chickin' pickin' riffs. I hope people like it! Thanks!

  • I know Ted Greene used a variety of nocasters and teles but are these off the shelf teles going to be good for jazz? If so single coil or the humbucker neck pickup model?

Fantastic playing and as always great information man. Is there a style you can't play?

  • I started playing with an epiphone explorer and a gretsch 5122. I can't play a guitar with contours if I want to. Hell, I can't even hold a strat without have to concentrate on it.

  • That is one badass guitar, man

  • G'day John. I have very fond memories of seeing you many times when you were living and playing in Perth, Western Oz. Great to see you still pickin'. You were and are a legend. Cheers, Tim

  • Whoa. Thanks Tim. And I'm still carrying the love of those moments around myself. I will return and play again hopefully in the near future. Cheers mate!

  • Hey, i've got an older tele and the same roland cube amp, what settings did you use?

  • FANTASTIC BRAND NEW TELE !!!!

  • Did John knock the switch cap off? It was there up until about 7:30, and then it was gone for the rest of the video

  • what are the inlays? they look almost silver colored

  • Very nice man! Gotta question for you though: How would you compare this to a Highway 1 tele?

  • Im sure the truss rod channel is filled with walnut?

  • Rosewood perhaps?

  • @johnhguitar I always remember growing up and people talking about the walnut skunk stripe on Fenders. Perhaps it depends on the year?

  • @johnhguitar i've played a tele before it sounds great with reverb! best thing about it i played it at musos corner in newcastle

  • The switch knob came off during your video/while you were playing?!

It is a quality instrument but they cost a lot of money and if I spend a lot of money on a guitar I don't want knobs falling off while I'm playing

  • pa mi q tu ers putito

  • Aghh, does anyone know how much this guitar costs? it's so sexy, it's unreal xD

  • this guy gives very good comprehensive reviews. respect

  • The hat on the pick up selector fell off mine too had to glue it on.

  • you play guitar like mark knopfler!

  • im getting a tele for my b day and i really want a sunburst with the white outline

  • Fender!!!

  • have to say i enjoy watching your videos, very informative

  • he's like an american Terry Tibbs from 1:00-1:10

  • The Telecaster is one of the worst designed and bony, scraggy - sounding guitars ever. Everything about it sounds cheap. The Telecaster doesn't have any character or depth, compared with a Les Paul. Fender tried everything to make it sound like a Les Paul - they put noiseless pick-ups and humbuckers in the deluxe versions and added a rosewood neck, but it still sounds like s***.

  • @jprincehouston Wrong. The DELUXE Tele's are absolute shit (IMO). but not as shit as Les Pauls (IMO). Who wants an electric guitar that you can't get past the 14th fret? LP = one of the dumbest guitars in history (although it was admittedly groundbreaking when it was invented)

  • @Canadianspunge That must be why everyone plays them.... Genius statement.

They also have this concept called "practice", which, with enough repetitions, will allow your fingers to automatically reach higher frets without much hindrance or lack of comfort. Try it sometime.

  • @tcinpa37

Hahaha. IMO means in my opinion jackass. I understand that there are people that love the Les Paul, but it's beyond me to see why.

  • I don't know... Fender really hit the nail on the head with their American Special lines and even their MIM lines. The American Deluxe Strat is beautiful too, but I gotta say they missed with the deluxe Tele. A Tele with a binding and a contoured body? Sorry Fender, but that'll never be a Telecaster to me.

  • What an excellent player! Very informative video. I have a telecaster deluxe but it is not the same animal. I believe need a real tele in its original form.

  • Does it come with the hat?

    Just kiddin ;)

  • This guitar is really sweet apart from the contours at the back IMO. To me it just kinda spoils the point of a tele and the plank like shape of a tele has never really bothered me. Plus i'd imagine without the contours it would have a slightly fuller tone although they're won't be a massive difference.

  • nice review!

    great playing!

  • how do noisleless pickups work? i assume they dont work like a noise gate muting the signal while u stop playing...

  • The newer ones are stacked coils but there's also the new Lawrence design that I don't know much about. The Lace pickups on the older guitars were the coils with a magnet sheet instead of coils around a magnet which is the traditional way.

  • Their are also active pickups that are noiseless because the preamps in them would boost the volume above the noise a lot more than a passive pickup.

  • @44eelz The magnetic force is from miniature samarium cobalt magnets which, in conjunction with the moderator bars, deliver a wider, softer magnetic field. The pole pieces and moderator bars are made from special alloys to avoid inductance leakage and circular currents, as well as for the control of the eddy current effect. Theres no noise gate but alot of complicated Physics.

  • @joelbyrne thanks

  • Damn...Sounds like MY Tele~Bear 8-)

  • YEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  • I used to be Gibson Les Paul all the way. Now I love single coils and just bought a new deluxe tele!!! Love it!!! Best tone in the world!!

  • y'all hear

  • those feel incredibly nice in the hands! 8-)

  • that's a walnut stripe on the back of the neck. pretty standard fare for a tele. Let me know if i'm wrong about that. beautiful burst and binding. thx for the vid post. never knew about the tuning machine stagger and pitch angle. thanks!!

  • @abarbee81 Rosewood stripe is what they use most often.

  • he said in the video that its rosewood

  • he said in the video that it's rosewood, but i hate to say it, boys; the "skunk stripe" that adorns the back of the neck, as well as the little plug that covers the truss rod end are typically made of walnut. read up. love the video. love the teles.

  • The reason for diferent heights in tuners is a desing inprovment for better tuning estability. Especific angle range achieves that.

  • Im looking into Buying a telecaster.. i play lots of country-style rockabilly.. would a telecaster deluxe be right for me? or should i buy something like a highway one? i need twang right?

  • I own a highway one, it is quite a bit cheaper, the deluxe featurse alot o flare, unless you dislike hum from single coils, go with the highway one, but thats just me :)

  • best guitars in the world

  • @Andy13deanguitars your right

  • @Andy13deanguitars

    Best hat in the world

  • Did you remove the "hat" of the pickup selector, did it fall off or did it come that way?

  • Didn't notice. I'll check it out the next time I'm over at the owner's house.....Thanks

    What's with the crucifix?

  • John accidentally knocked it off at 7:34 in the video, he doesn't remember. Someone else commented on it.

    -jc

  • Most American Telecasters come with the round knob cover, not the hat style. I like both...

  • I got this for christmas last year, the greatest guitar i have ever played, i've tried every guitar and i love this tele the best

    rock on dudes and dudests

  • I tried one of these in a guitar store recently. It played like a dream and sounded great [better even than on this vid]. Contemplating buying one, but they're pricey.

  • IMHO deluxe series (Tele and Strat) sound like they are on anesthetics because of SCNs...

  • why fender doesnt make all their teles with contoured back like this?

  • Then it wouldn't be as classic. Teles I'd say are better kept original.

  • i may just be weird but i like slab bodies on tele's more, they just feel more solid to me lol

  • @teleman587063 so agree theres something special about just a solid peice of wood with no frills

  • Volcom shirt + cowboy hat + fender telecaster = awesome ! =D

  • this guitar player is way way better than any rock distortionist

  • it has a dummy coil so its technically not a single coil

  • the American Deluxe tele is a great guitar I owned one for a year or so but I liked the sound of the Highway 1 more which I got used for 425. HIghway one is not nearly as sexy but the tone is fantastic.

  • great review and great playing, I do not own a Tele yet but will own one some day. By the way has anyone ever told you that you look like Al Bundy in a cowboy hat. Just an observation not a bad thing by the way. Keep up the good work.

  • Hey I was just wondering the model of that exact guitar. So it's an American Deluxe telescaster sunburst colour?

  • Yes, aged cherry sunburst, but I paid $1125 when I got it last Dec. Here's the link,

    (remove spaces)

    guitarcenter . com /Fender-American-Deluxe-Series-Telecaster-Electric-Guitar-102576121-i1146730.gc

  • This guy is a really good guitarist!

  • I like the fact that you play through a cube amp, since most players watching these videos don't have expensive tube amps. I think it gives a more realistic feel to the sound of the guitar.

    cheers

  • Exactly. The point is to give the guitars an even chance. All the guitars through the same cheap amp....

  • great review, keep up the good work John!

  • do mim fender nashville telecasters have contoured bodies?

  • The E and A tuning machines aren't higher, the rest are shorter. This is done to insure that you get more downward force on the higher strings without having to use 2 string trees. Pretty good general purpose info videos, though.

  • What I lack people are suppose to fill in. I've learned a lot by sticking my neck out in just talking about this stuff in plain view. Thanks for being so polite and explaining this so clearly. There are those in our world looking for an excuse to drive an other's self confidence into the ground. I just try and share enough to get the interest going and the rest is left to divine providence.

  • Hey John, i think that the saddles are stainless steel saddles, not really the chrome covered brass ones.

  • I got this guitar at GC last Dec, and their website now says,

"Stainless steel bridge with chrome-plated brass saddles"

    guitarcenter . com / Fender-American-Deluxe-Series-Telecaster-Electric-Guitar-102576121-i1146730 . gc

Although the price is a lot higher now...

    -jc

  • Yeah i actually saw that too on one of the hang tags. Another reviewer on here said the y used stainless steel saddles, so now i'm confused but i'll go with what the tags say.

  • the mexican version sounded better.

  • nice playing and fantastic review.

I would like one like that, sounds amazing!

at 7:35 you blow away the pickup selector cover .. Try searching it can't go so far

    :D

  • hey john, nice review of my dream guitar haha

what do you think of the highway one teles compared to the mexican standards&americans? thankss~

  • Nice tele man! Thats my dream guitar! Sounds Good!

  • haha around 8.10 he knocked off the head of the guitars pick-up selector. ^_^

  • i mean 7.34/7.35

  • I was wondering how long it would take someone to notice that ... 5 months.

    -jc

  • chicken picken :D

    yay.

  • I own a tele and I'm still impressed by how simple it is compared so some guitars (no floyde tremelo, other fancy features etc.) but the guitar is still one of the best out there, don't be fooled by this guitars appearance, it can do a lot of tones and it sounds amazing!

  • im a fan of gibson sound but that guitar has a hell of sound. soon i'll have one...

  • How much money did you pay for that guitar ?

  • they cost about 1,7k

  • i love country music

  • that intro riff is extremely repetitive and annoying .

  • ami me mola todas tus guitarras especialmente la gibson es 335

  • maybe if the standard has a more square shape, you can still play it stand up

  • nice hat dude

  • That was some sweet riffage at the beginning! ^_^

  • You don't? I love it, more than the huge Stratocaster one.

  • Just a matter of what's normal...I grew up with Gibson headstocks, and the normal STRAT headstock seemt to small to me...so I had to go with a 70's CBS style one...

  • paradise of guitars!

  • A small correction - the SCN pickups are stacked humbuckers, that's why they're noiseless. They are not "real" single-coils. The only quiet "true" single coils were made by Lace.

  • Is that true? I was told that these pickups have a magnet that was developed by Bill Lawrence. So they're a new stacked pickup with a new magnet design?

    Thanks for the clarification. John

  • What about Gibson's new P90h single coil pick ups? They're noiseless.

  • Roland Cube 30, its ok, great reverb, I'm impressed! Excelent Tele, Great Player. Greetings from Argentina, John, from a tele fan:)

  • tamburica

  • i really hate know it all comments. for all i know they just copy excerpts from Wikipedia and it all can't be true since you can edit what they say there.

  • If this is directed at me I can only say I've worked in music stores my whole life and I don't study anything. I've said some things on these videos that were not quite correct but I'm more concerned about the quality of the instrument than the serial number. I just pick them up and play them and give an opinion and that's what everyone should do in the end. Go out there and play these guitars at stores and get a feel for good and bad. You can't listen to me talk and become a good guitarist.

  • with all respect dude that wasn't directed at you. i love all your videos especially the blues lessons.

  • great tone. JUST TO LET EVERYONE KNOW,

its not only for country, blues, etc,

keith richards uses one, jim root of slipknot uses one, john Frusciante, and various others. its a great guitar.

  • bruce springsteen

  • how much?

  • I always love your reviews John. That intro peice was great.

  • Telecaster is 'noted' as country AND Rock n Roll lineage. The greatest ROCKERS of all time have used em...still do. Jimmy Page played his STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN solo WITH A TELECASTER.....remember that Les Paul fans.

  • Most of Jimmy's studio stuff was done on a telecaster. Obviously, he knew his stuff.

  • wr0ng

  • Les Paul Custom with 3 pickups. He only got the tele came later (a gift from Jeff Beck), when he joined the Yardbirds.

  • no "came"** :)

  • Its a Fact that led zeppelin used a telecaster when he recorded his first album. I'm not sure but I think it was given to him by Joe Walsh

  • It was really given to him in 1966 by Jeff Beck. Jimmy bought the Les Paul Standard from Joe Walsh (that became his #1 guitar), in early 1969.

  • great guitar indeed but play some jazz or rock to see what a tele can give,,WHY IS IT ALWAYS A COUNTRY style when it comes to tele demo...

  • One of my favorite guitarist was Ted Greene and he was not a country guy at all...........but a great tele chord melody dude.........

  • well my guitar teacher uses one with just a hotter bridge pickup.

and the tone is just amazing!

but i have never ever worked with country.

mostly blues and jazz and sometimes rock.

oh and if you need to hear some rock with this guitar just look up We the Kings.

  • Its always country because a tele is generally a country guitar! It's way more versatile than that though

  • Danny Gatton used a tele...enough said.

  • well i'd like to know if there are any other telecasters with an assymetrical neck plate and not a square one.

Some cheaper model than this american deluxe one.

  • I know there were some USA HM models that with that plate design back in the 80's or 90's. I think they made an HM Tele but I don't remember the details....Sorry

  • John, you are one of the best doing tests. No bullshit and you know what you are talking about- it is very very interesting even to those of us who also know a few things.- you know how to play these guitars too. (understatement)

deep admiration and thanks from norway

  • Thank you very much. Not all people see or say it that way but that's the price for going public... Check out the PRS review and see for yourself....Thanks again.....

  • Very good review. I bought the american deluxe tele and I'm thoroughly impressed with it.

  • i dont like telecasters' appearance that much.. they look nice, but they dont have that sweet flashy look of strats or les pauls...

  • Yeah, but sound's what really counts (not that any of those three don't sound great.)

  • telecasters are the most twangy guitars ever

  • They made the changes due to the Alternative Rock guys using them.

  • Thanks for the review. Did you ever play with a plectrum and just give it away? Or did you just learn to play without one.

  • myxomatosico, te va a joder, hijo de puta, se no te gusta, va joder tu culo.

  • Could someone translate??

  • Its not pleasent

  • johnhguitar,

Don't worry about waht myxomatosico wrote, he is a known schizophrenic asshole!

I loved your review and you kick ass with your guitar playing! By the way, what size strings do guys use on telecasters?

Keep up the good work and thank you for the video, I'm going to purchase a tele today!!

  • I use .12 or .11 depending on what the store has. They almost always run out of .12

  • Wow! I tried 10's for the first time and they seem pretty thick but the sound is fantastic! I have used 8's but thinner strings had a weak sound to them and not a full heavy sound like the 10's.

How can you bend 11's or 12's?

What kind of music do you play?

  • you need to build some hand strength. i use 12's on a telecaster and stratocaster for paisley type stuff and bend them without a problem. they have devices to build hand strength. buy one.

  • Fantastic!! I'll go to guitar center and get one of these devices you mentioned. Hopefully some day I'll be able to use and bend 12's!!

Once again thank you for the info!!

  • no prob.i never used one of the strengtheners partly because i worked on cars and air conditioners and had pretty good hand strength already. when i first started playing like 10 years ago, i was kind of week in the hands as far as guitar goes because it was all new, but the device lets you strengthen one finger at a time. its got springs on it and you squeeze one finger at a time with the hand you grab the chords with for however long and it helps. your hands might hurt but it will get easier.

  • 10s are almost as weak as 9s for me. I can bend up two steps or more with 11s and 12s. I play a little bit of everything, blues, rock, country, jazz, church music.

  • i use 13's on my Artcore but i don't do bends :))

  • That is amazing! I went from 8's to 10's and I notice the difference right away. I think I'll work my way up little by little.

I sure love my Tele! It has sounds no other guitar has and it plays very, very well.

I've started playing my classical music on it and people like the sound!! I've even started playing Flamenco on it and it drives people crazy! At first they think I'm going to play a country solo and are shocked to hear Flamenco!!

  • Yes, they are very versatile instruments.

  • i usually use .12 or .11 also but i have a problem tuning it. every time i try i guess im putting to much tension on the bridge because every time i would try to tune it down all the other strings would go up and vis versa. do you have that problem?

  • have you tried reducing the stress and tension on the back bridge block? it might mess with your action so if you try that be careful

  • ill try that. thanks.

  • np tell me how it works out for ya =)

  • it worked perfectly. i have had this problem for months and it used to take me 15 minuets getting every string right. now it take me my usual 2 or 3 minutes. thanks again.

  • he said some nasty things don't try to translate it
