I thought P-a-g-l-i-a was pronounced S-c-a-f-l-y! Has Paglia joined the "LADIES AGAINST WOMEN' movement? She must read NAOMI WOLF'S 'FIRE WITH FIRE'! To further VICTIMIZE girls and women with her brand of pseudo-intellectual regressive-feminist propaganda is not helping empower women. She should read Wolf's extraordinary book,as she DOES agree with Paglia --to a logical point only. Compromise is needed. Camile can't continue her femicide with intellectual impunity!!
Paglia's take on all things "Naomi"is shrilly derisory. She's vituperated Wolf for not being able to competently construct a paragraph...!...An absurdity likenable to accusing Aristide Maillols of sculpting saggy breasts!
i was looking for Cammile Paglia's interviews on youtube, and ran into your vid. Thank you. I enjoyed watching it and hear your comment on the book. You are really beautiful.
just a question..about Camille Paglia... what specifically is her stance on online pornography and it's prevalence and accessibility among our youth. I know her opinions on the issue are considered radical by some, but are often well reasoned regarding this issue. Please clarify if you can.
Read the Scars of Evolution by Elaine Morgan. Then proceed to "The Moral Animal" by Richard Wright. Camille Paglia did say that are laptop culture is turning our men into a bunch of "sissies." Our youtube, myspace, reality is anti-intellectual. And an intellectual like Paglia surely understands this.
if a woman is seperated away from the women and left to the men she'd be gang raped. the concept of obstacle and female specific liberation is total bullshit...as paglia states in the first chapter of sexual personae, perfect freedom would be to die by earth air water and fire...this cow milking artsy intellectual discourse is too depressing...nyculla tell em!

As a woman, I am objectified nothing wrong with that. To deny that is to be insane...R077 is making the point I am stupid because I am a good looking 'object.' I can be both an effective object and a mind all at the same time.

Paglia's great pro-sex feminism may be to blame for hook-up culture. The recognition of sexuality in art for its own sake, liberates the erotic impulses, encourages carnal thinking when looking at art, but then it can take over. After SP, can you think of sexiness and substance as opposite?
I agree with you on the value Camille Paglias thinking. I have sought out her ideas over many years now. I think of her as one of my "teachers" I've never met, and she is about my age. Her gender and sexual orientation have never stopped me from appreciating her intellectual resources.
Oh, and also, are you wearing braces? That is so awesome!! Did you read in SP (I think it was chapter 6) where Camille writes that women who wear braces were held in great esteem as markers of the big swerve of society getting away from enemy nature. THis is why you see girls with braces in ALL the Hollywood films. And also, Im willing to bet money that Camille would insist that you put on some CHAPSTICK as SOON AS POSSIBLE!!
Thanks. I have always been a bit alienated by the reaction I have on men. It is a complicated thing, and I loved her book because she talked so frankly about what aesthetics means to us, the animal that walks.
Thanks. I have always been a bit alienated by the reaction I have on men. It is a complicated thing, and I loved her book because she talked so frankly about what aesthetics means to us, the animal that walks.
I don't believe that, I think you enjoy the attention, otherwise you'd make no effort to make yourself up. I think it's possible you don't want to appear like you have a big ego.
Well I think that you make yourself look beautiful to attract attention from men. Maybe you do it subconsiously? I'm not a sexist pig... at least I don't think I am. I treat everyone with the respect they deserve.
For me, Sexual Personae was a revelation of why many rock stars wear long hair, why they adopt the dionysian effeminacy, and also why rock music appeals to a certain type of personality. I see Camille Paglia as a prophetess of all art and her observations tie in very neatly with a psychosexual reading of religion, too, a thing I've long suspected and had confirmed by her.
it was an epiphany for me too. I saw the bust of Nefeterit in Berlin shortly after reading it, and she was so right about how it was a great step in civilization, were a woman's beauty was her head, and not her body.
Can you clarify that a little bit? When you say that woman's beauty was her head and not her body, do you mean that the "shape" of her head was beautiful, or that nefertiti was a smart thinker? Because Im inclined to think these days that if you have the right shaped head and have alot of power, that automatically means youre SMART, and hence beautiful!!"
So, what you are saying is that Camille is a big fan of "dionysian effeminacy?!?!?" Could you explain that, because I thought she preferred religion to gay culture.
Dionysian effeminacy does not necessarilly equate "gay" and Camille Paglia didn't come across to me as taking a partizan position in "Sexual Personae". Have you read the book? As an example, Elvis Presley falls in the cathegory of the "beautiful boy" without being gay.
So, in other words, camille is ok with "dionysian effemincacy" just as long as there is no "gayness" to it. I think Im beginning to understand. Because the "dionysian effeminacy" that DOES involve "gayness" is something you REALLY have to watch out for! And Elvis was SOOOO dionysian. Did you see that one movie where he hung out with guys who dressed up as Pan and had festivals in the forest? And those gospel songs he sung must have been a tribute to Bacchus himself.
Oh, wow!.. As far as SP goes, Camille Paglia "approves" of gayness. The bit about ancient pederasty must have been in the other half you didn't read. :p Also, if you really must know how dionysian Elvis or any rock star really is/was, why don't you look at the effect they have on women - pretty much the hysteria of the ancient rites. But if you expect a literal reenactment of pagan mystery cults to see sense in what CP is saying, I'm afraid her book is wasted on you.
Yeah, man, I DID read about the pederasty, but who said Camille is sane and consistent? Ok, so let me see if I understand this: When talking about "straight dionysian" phenomenon(Elvis), its something positive, something to keep! But when talking about "gay dionysian" phenomenon, suddenly LITERAL REENACTMENTS of "grisly" dionysian rites(pagan mystery cults, rape, gangbangs, murder, etc) surface-the type that we need religion to protect us from.
I will need to read that article about gay culture; can you give me a link? In SP "gayness" CP talks as of a bond between males against "the Mother", but she really doesn't take sides in that book - not the way I read it.
I've now read the article: to sum it up, it does not follow that gayness is a ticket to being a brilliant artist or scientist, which gay activism seems to purport. And I have to agree with that. In contrast to gayness, religion is, despite everything, intrinsically value producing - in Western civilization religion has been the greatest patron of art. So that's what CP is getting at. If you're gay and smart, you really shouldn't feel offended.
Man, you are so AWESOME! "In contrast to gayness, Religion is, *DESPITE EVERYTHING*, intrinsically value producing."
Shall we run through a quick list of what that "EVERYTHING" is? "Despite everything" indeed!!!!!! Both you and this stupid K-Mart nyculla bitch are only proving to me that IDIOTS are into Camille Paglia.
Yeah, I know that she's a lesbian, and that you arent her. I just found it ironic that you two were saying these things in the context of this discussion on CP. Get it??! Get it!???!
Ok, Im sorry I called you a Stupid K-Mart bitch and idiots. I forgot that Im somewhat older than you and have had more time to think about these concepts as they relate to real life experience.
Holy cow! Sheltered means you live inside of a shelter. In this context, Im saying that you are not really exposed to the outside world. If you were, I doubt you would find me odd. Im nothing compared to whats out there.
you are very odd. who are you to say I am a sheltered Kmart bitch? If it makes you feel better to make generalizations and insults about people go right ahead.
She gives a "read thread" to the whole of Western culture and much of what she actually says has been said before in various forms. I hope you're at least familiar with the dionysian and appollonian as the ying-yang of art. Nietzsche also analyzes these principles in great depth and their mixing together he identifies as "decadence". But all these words do not mean what they mean colloquially.
Ive read half of SP, most of Vamps and Tramps, and countless articles including "I'll Take Religion Over Gay Culture" in which she is in NO WAY partisan!
That's an interesting, very personal reading of her book. For me, the accent fell on sexual archetypes of which the androgyne is the most poignant - it seems, where the male and female principles mix in that particular way, regardless whether in a man or a woman, great art is born - or whatever other outlet.
Well, I cant wait for all your friends here to deride me as a Pro-Gloria Steinem Stalinist,PC, hippie, left liberal commie. Thats usually the response when I talk about these things.
Well Ms. Paglia I think would never dislike someone for thinking. It is as much a victim as Ms. Steinem of the vitriol we give out to our female intellectuals who dare to have opinions on how women should be treated or act.
Ok, I have to ask this, even though I know Im going to be labeled an extremist. Paglia's model for feminism is Madonna. So why do you think that Paglia doesn't want you to be a "sexy young woman" instead of a "woman of substance?"
Paglia is not really a fan of Madonna, per se. She is interested in how women's images have been molded and changed throught civilization. She is a fan of beauty and civilization, not Madonna. I really loved the book because it made me feel better about falling prey to the profound pressure we as humans put on young women. My eating disorder was a simple extension of my tie to the earth, my foremothers also had to battle.
This reminds me of Britney Spears praising of George Bush in the film "Fahrenheit 911." Let me ask you, did you read Paglia's article "I'll Take Religion Over Gay Culture?"
Ha I guess I am supposed to be offended instead I amuzed. Camille would be impressed that you equated to a modern day pagan goddess like Britney. I have not read it, but I will not that you mention it. Knowing Camille it was prob. an amazing critique of how gay culture is obsessed with being gay, hopefully the future holds the promise of people being viewed as people independent of who they choose to sleep with. Camille is an intellectual of the future.

Camile Paglia seems to have a balanced view on many topics which means shes hated by those positioned at an extreme. Should be good for an arguement or two with this conservative feminist friend of mine - I'll bring her up.
I like her a lot too. She has a brief scene in Hal Hartley's "Henry Fool" dvd - and recently on youtube there was a 3 part "Return of A Clockwork Orange" where she is interviewed quite a bit.

Well, I cant wait for all your friends here to deride me as a Pro-Gloria Steinem Stalinist,PC, hippie, left liberal commie. Thats usually the response when I talk about these things.
chrismanxxx 4 years ago
My friends are all PC hippie, liberal communists. and I do not mind Gloria she dares to think.
nyculla 4 years ago
I meant all your friends HERE on this Youtube page. And you better not let Camille find out you dont mind Gloria.

Well Ms. Paglia I think would never dislike someone for thinking. It is as much a victim as Ms. Steinem of the vitriol we give out to our female intellectuals who dare to have opinions on how women should be treated or act.
nyculla 4 years ago
Well, Camille has LOTS of vitriol for Ms. Steinem. Why? Because she dislikes the way she thinks.
chrismanxxx 4 years ago
Oh goodness you got me there. I am so tired. I concede on the point.
nyculla 4 years ago
Ok, I have to ask this, even though I know Im going to be labeled an extremist. Paglia's model for feminism is Madonna. So why do you think that Paglia doesn't want you to be a "sexy young woman" instead of a "woman of substance?"
chrismanxxx 4 years ago
Paglia is not really a fan of Madonna, per se. She is interested in how women's images have been molded and changed throught civilization. She is a fan of beauty and civilization, not Madonna. I really loved the book because it made me feel better about falling prey to the profound pressure we as humans put on young women. My eating disorder was a simple extension of my tie to the earth, my foremothers also had to battle.

Paglia is not really a fan of Madonna!??!?!?!? Debating you is gonna be easier than I thought.

This reminds me of Britney Spears praising of George Bush in the film "Fahrenheit 911." Let me ask you, did you read Paglia's article "I'll Take Religion Over Gay Culture?"
chrismanxxx 4 years ago
Ha I guess I am supposed to be offended instead I amuzed. Camille would be impressed that you equated to a modern day pagan goddess like Britney. I have not read it, but I will not that you mention it. Knowing Camille it was prob. an amazing critique of how gay culture is obsessed with being gay, hopefully the future holds the promise of people being viewed as people independent of who they choose to sleep with. Camille is an intellectual of the future.
nyculla 4 years ago
Yeah, please read it.
chrismanxxx 4 years ago
I will, thanks for the tip!:)
nyculla 4 years ago
Yeah, since when did Camille go for the Sinead O'Connor look?

Ha! I guess I am supposed to be offended instead I amused. Camille would be impressed that you equated me to a modern day pagan goddess like Britney. I have not read it, but I will now that you mention it. Beautiful video. I lean towards Paglian alot, too...and I stick out like sore thumb (a violent one) in my poststructuralist-dominated department.
Cheers :-)

Good luck, it saddens me that she invokes such reaction form the intellectual establishment.
