I remember watching "Sanford and Son" growing up and seeing at the end of that show that it was based on "Steptoe and Son" I must say I love Youtube because I can see the original. Why are people talking about J.J. Walker? Redd Fox was great in Sanford and Son. Sanford and Son was probably the only show that America ripped off that was actually decent. You can't compare these two shows. They are good on their own.
@merseyman69 lol, dont think it was just his weird sexual habits for reason they didnt get on. he was arrogant, obnoxious, turning up drunk and fluffing his lines alot (some episodes its very clear to see him drunk), not turning up, being paid way more (1k and episode which was massive back then). the list goes on and on why he hated the ol' man but they were and still are the best thing ever produced with sir norman wisdom. i have all the steptoe's and wisdom movies.
They tried to upstage each other at every given moment....& Wilfred Bramble was extremely jealous as Harry H Corbett, got so many better lines than him...they ended up hating each other because of Brambles jealousy. Corbett was clearly the funnier comedy actor....Bramble makes a mistake at 4.13 but recovers well..still timeless British comedy at its best!!!

@mrcydonia i stand corrected thanks. yes hardy was a yank but lets face it.....Laurel was by far the funnier out of the two comedians. Also Harold Lloyd was not bad for a yank though lol.

I think U.K. comedies rely more on physical humor whereas U.S. comedies put more of an emphasis on plots and funny lines. Also, the production value of U.K. comedies aren't quite up to par with U.S. comedies and that is why U.S shows are popular in the U.K. but U.K. shows are not quite so popular in the U.S.
@nkevinb I'd say exactly the opposite... Perhaps they're more similar than dissimilar... Though NO ONE would just open a house door without knocking, which seems to be an interesting comic device in many American and Canadian sitcoms...
The UK and The US have very good actors and tv sitcoms as well as many other countries... Steptoe & Son was a clasic in the UK as was Sanford & Son in the US.
This is classic old day comedy, and most you american folk wouldn't understand this era of england, you lot were to busy with vietnam and gettin off ya faces on shrooms
@northvilletunnels are are show called sanford & son was based from this and sanford & son is a big hit here it was a bit hit when it first came out in the 70's and still is a big hit in reruns today ...we also have hit shows here like this one show we have called (house) staring a british actor named (Hugh Laurie) and that show is also a big hit here ....so i got to say as an American we have alot of great shows in the usa
@neonbrights why is it not ok to base some of are shows on your stuff ...but its ok to let your actors come over to are country and be in are movies and in are tv shows ...like are tv show called (house) its stars a british actor named(Hugh Laurie) hes from oxford england theres one ...then we have a late night talk show with a british host named craig ferguson..so that's ok right to give your people acting jobs but if we dare base a show from your country we are assholes is that what your sayin
@arkie74 you can say that again ....i got some british assholes trying to tell me there steptoe & son is better ...i say bullshit ...i juat watched this clip from there show i didn't laugh once ....sanford & son is and will always be better ...yeah we mite have got the idea from them but we made a much better show out of it .long live FRED G SANFORD AND THE G IS FOR GREAT SHOW
Legendary writing, legendary acting...today's comedy writers/so called actors..throw away what you think you know..this is how it's done...we don't want pc crap..we dont want people talking like they are 5 year olds and somehow thinking it is funny..it's not..this is how it is done..got it.
I think they really didn't like each other at all by this point. Most of the problem stemmed from Wilfred's alcoholism and unwillingness to rehearse properly. Harry being a very committed professional actor used to find this very disrespectful. It makes it all the more astounding that the chemistry worked so well on screen. Sometimes you can detect the hostility between them. The problems in their working relationship seem to add another dimension to the show somehow.
@multimill steptoe & son ain't funny at all ...and for one thing the actor that plays the son needs to learn to stop looking at the camera ..a good actor don't stare into the camera....and i just watched this clip i didn't laugh once matter fact it was boring me to death ....your steptoe & son can never be compared to are sanford & son even if are show is based off yours ..we made it funny ..yours wan't funny at all ...keep trying you mite git it right some day
@paul1967uk yeah and us yanks as you call us give your actors jobs in movies and in tv ...like craig ferguson a late night talk show host ...then a actor named Hugh Laurie that plays a doctor in a hit tv show called house ...but thats ok ....and i just saw your steptoe & son not as funny as are sanford & son .....but anyway thats ok ain't it give your actors jobs that we could be giving are actors..and how you show your thanks ...you bitch about us basing a show one one of your shows (please)
@paul1967uk we got great actors here in the usa you just have bad taste ....Philo Taylor Farnsworth (August 19, 1906 – March 11, 1971) was an American inventor and television pioneer.[2] Although he made many contributions that were crucial to the early development of all-electronic television, he is perhaps best known for inventing the first fully-functional all-electronic image pickup device (video camera tube), the "image dissector", the first fully-functional and complete
@paul1967uk 2nd part of my message ....all-electronic television system, and for being the first person to demonstrate such a system to the public........now do you see that name American inventor ....sounds like thats where the real tv came from ...so maybe you should be thankful for tv
It's kind of sad and affective, but I was listening to Kelly Clarkson's Because of You and jumping through various episodes, Curse of Steptoe, and some of their interviews. It's a good match, when you think about it.
Sometimes I think I am becoming Harold. I used to love albert as a kid, but now as I get older I can sympathise and identify with Harold more ...ha ha ha ha ! This is just the best Steptoe ever. Modern comedy cannot copare to the ideas and scrpt writing on these classics !
@capricious71 Think lot of that stuff was blown out of preportion though about the two of them really hating each other, think it was like any working relationship, they probably had their good and bad days on set.
One of the best programmes ever,so funny.

Modern comedy cannot copare to the ideas and scrpt writing on these classics !

lol when albert puts the teeth in and they are too big

Brilliant writing and acting. I think the fact that they didn't really get on in real life, from what I heard, just seemed to add to it.

@capricious71 Think lot of that stuff was blown out of preportion though about the two of them really hating each other, think it was like any working relationship, they probably had their good and bad days on set.

I've just realised what 'Steptoe and Son' is... it's... it's ARISTOPHANES!! (ancient Greek comic playwright - see 'The Wasps')
