  • how much boost can a stock 4.0 handle?

  • sounds like a detroit!

  • what did you have to do to make it hold up to 500trq-450hp?! Christ, I'd be happy if it made 250-275, Im gonna turbo my 4.0 xj, probally use a megasquirt for tuning. Ive had experience with turbo's and tuning with my cobra, But do you have any sugestions or tricks about the 4.0 with boost?

    awsome engine!

  • hey man pretty interested in this do u guys have a website?

  • help!! i am going to build one of these as i currently buy jeeps that dont run and get them back on the street. i love these and would really like to build a 4.0 to show non believers whats up. can you give me a detail on how you built this? parts, machined, turbo......? thanks

  • what did you do with the computer to increase injector pulse width in relation to boost? I was thinking of doing this but dont know where to get a computer flashed.

  • I'd like to drop that into my Jeep! LOL! Sweet! Nice job man!

  • a stock I6 4.0L engine with a turbo? how much boost can it handle?

  • I'm working on a turbo stroker. I have a turbo from a 6.0 powerstroke. Bored .060"+ it comes out to roughly 4.66l. Why the e-85? I'm planning on installing mine in a 2000 Laredo so I'm keeping my electronic ignition & fuel injection obviously but I'd have to get it reprogrammed for a different fuel. But if theres an advantage I'm all ears to suggestions.

  • @SpliffbobSmokeplants a lot of people with turbos are starting to use E-85, higher octane levels, makes it run better.

  • @SpliffbobSmokeplants Its true you get higher octane levels with with 85% alcohol, but your fuel mileage drops through the floor. It runs cooler and works well with higher compression because it lacks the thermal output of straight gasoline. E85 would probably work well in a carburated application, but you will run into entirely too many hurdles to make it work with the Chrysler JTEC controller. Ill put another post up after this to try to explain it more in detail.

  • Since you have to make up for the lack in thermal energy in alcohol with more volume, you need a higher rate fuel pump, larger injectors and a way to increase the pulse width when running flat out at full boost. It takes a TON of E85 to supply enough fuel to a boosted engine to prevent a catastrophic lean condition. I dont know that you could manipulate the JTEC with enough false inputs to actually keep it from melting down. Sounds like a cool build, but id stick with gas to be safe.

  • what did you do to it? im guessing reswirling the heads, maybe porting, tuning, performance computer a few other things and the turbo. i'd intercool it to.

  • toooooooooooooooooooooooorqueeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

That thing sounds awesome, what have you got done to it?

  • baby cummins haha. those 4.0 jeep engines are nearly invincible. any jeeper can tell you that. sucks chrysler discontinued it.

  • @09adge13 Chrysler had actually planned on continuing production of the 4.0L but they couldn't get the economy and emissions they were looking for with it.

  • @kovacs88 damn that really sucks i really wanted to see them power the new JKs.

  • Ha! It sounds just like an old "screeming Jimmy" 2-stroke.

  • Shit, yeah, that does sound like a 2 stroke Detroit Diesel, cool sound.

  • sounds like a diesel

  • you should sell kits on e-bay :D

  • damn! that sounds like a fuckin detroit 6v71!

  • Rocky Mountain Humming Bird!

  • 505 performance makes a kit

  • What other mods does the engine have other than turbo?

  • LOL.. it runs like a diesel!!!

    Best ET is 10.89 @ 122mph in the 1/4

    In a1979 AMC Spirit

  • iam runing a 81 amc spirit with a sb 304 stock runing high 12 in the 1/4

  • the 4.2 has bigger internals like said, thats why guys sawp 4.0 fuelinjected heads on them, so its the power of the 4.2, but the drivebility/performance, fuel milege of the 4.0. i wish i never sold mine, time to find another, and turbo it. this thing sounds like a diesel!!! lol

  • Where do I go to get this turbo for my jeep

  • Sounds awesome, and great numbers. I'd love to have a small turbo on the 4.0, but that's more power than I'd ever need. I wonder how a turbo would fare on the 2.5.

  • Sorry I don't make a kit.

    Just built it all myself.

With some help from good friends

  • How much for a kit?

  • how much would this turbo kit cost?

  • Everybody wants a stroker its good to see some people out there that knows that there,s plenty of potential out of a 4.0 without stroking it.

  • yeah I agree, does the 4L crank have more stroke then the 4.2?

  • No the 4.2 has the longer stroke thats how you make a stroker by putting it in the 4.0 block.

  • Man i need that

  • Thats sick

  • Final result ... 500 ft lbs at 4300 RPM

    450 HP at 5500 RPM

13 pounds of boost on E-85

  • I love these engines! ...I do believe more buildup details are available at one of the AMC forums...

  • Hey mate, just curious why the 4L thing weighs like 500lbs, good engine, but weighs a shit load, why didn't you use something else?

  • Cause I am an AMC guy!!!!

  • Very good reason!

  • Ur retarded it wieghs 360lbs for the long block

  • your retarded

  • @DardeeChar using that theory, everyone should be running r/c engines.

  • @DardeeChar It IS a good engine, and very capable of lasting well over 200K miles with regular service. Yeah, it's an iron lump, a smooth torquey, somewhat economical, reliable durable iron lump though. That engine pretty much saved the Cherokee from the mediocrity it was suffering with the GM 2.5-4 or 2.6 V-6 junk it was first on the market with. It's something that AMC really got right.

  • I love it! im doing the same build up, for my 04 jeep, where did you get forged pistons?stock bore?thanks

  • i got a '65 cj5 with a ford 2.3 turbo in it. makes 30 lbs. of boost.

  • It shoved the stock 60,000 mile head gasket out at 15 lbs. And cracked 2 stock pistons. I built the header based off the stock one. Sorry, I will not be making kits or headers for sale. The engine is going in a 1979 AMC Spirit drag car. I have new forged pistons on the way. This is an on going project and I fully expected to break a few things. Shooting for 500hp with a cam change and the next test. Also going to E-85 fuel. Thanks for the interest!

  • @TurboAMC what rods are you using? you may want to consider lowering the compression either with the new pistons if possible or rod/crank, i assume your using arp head studs? have you experimented with the 258 block?

  • how much would the turbo kit cost?

  • es muy importante for you to tell us your findings. What is the website? I have the appetite, i want to fight. I was not too good at tae bow but i certainly WANT A turbo!!!

  • What You Got To Do For Have 400hp... If Have A Stock Wrangler 4.0l???

  • did you have to custom make the exhaust manifold?and how much boost can you run on a stock head gasket?ive heard 5psi if you dont want to hurt anything

  • Stock 2000 jeep 4.0

    MegaSquirt Fuel injection

Very old TO-4 turbo from an international truck.

  • Specs, specs, specs?

  • Verry nice I cant wait for some more vids.
