I remember feeling terribly excited when I heard the Beatles (Oh god, yes, THE actual Beatles) were to release a single: Free as a Bird / Real Love. I stayed up late waiting for the premiere and when I heard them, I cried so hard, especially with this one. It gave me a feeling of "Oh hello there, boys, where had you been all this time? we missed you!!" It was a nice way to finally get some serious closure on this amazing history.
Where are u John? We miss u, miss new records at Christmas, miss a good word to go beyond hard times.... there are no problems, only solutions! You really helped us. Don't know why, but U did! Night John, night everybody.
@shoutandtwist uh...he's dead, you ask where are you then you kinda answer your own question..yes unfortunately he gone, but to start out saying where are you, which you couldn't even take the time to spell,is a little melodramtic? especially since you know..surprised you didn't put r for are.he didn't help his first wife & child, julian.never paid a dime to help raise his first son, never even went to see him.ignored him entirely until a year or so before he died.and julian made the effort, not john
Funny, but this made me sad about Harrison, when I thought it would make me sad about Lennon. He too, is missed. I love the chord changes Lennon plays on the piano on the bridge between the verses and the chorus.
Everyone make a little sign that says Real Love and put it in your window. You can make it as fancy as you want or as simple as you want. Can you dig it.
I would love to see this song and Free As A Bird be released for The Beatles Rockband, The dreams scape of the fab four playing this would be amazing.
I was 12 when they hit American radio. They changed my life; and not much of a push to say they changed the world. What a privilege to have been there, and what a stark contrast to the wasteland that remains. The Beatles wrote the Next Wave of classical music, and will be icons when GaGa and Fiddy Cent are trash bin footnotes.
I wonder if that is Paul leaning down to hug George at 3:20?....whatever problems they all had in the past it didn't matter...they always loved each other...
@MsJune54 Yes. that is Paul hugging his brother George. They were like brothers and brothers can sometimes not get along but they did love each other no doubt about it.
The flying white piano is John Lennon's piano he played in "Imagine". Then a few years ago Lady Gaga bought it and painted it with colors and destroyed it. That piano was historical.
I remember when this came out in 96'. I felt left out of the whole beatlemania thing cos I wasn't born in the 60s. This was my chance to feel at least 1/100% of what they felt back then. With something released during my time I was in line to buy it when it came out. It went to number 1, of course.
@The6thSimpson Well, working on this was tough. And it really was, I think the problem was the isolating his voice from the music. And I think they just decided to work on that master tape. They should've done his other song "Grow old with me" but now it's too late since George is dead.
@The6thSimpson I completely agree! I think it's nice how they used John's vocal and acoustic guitar track from way back when, and recorded the rest of the instruments and back-up vocals themselves. Even though John's singing was kind of distorted, I think it sounds better that way, because it gives the song a little bit of distortion to it. I like this video more than Free as a Bird's, also, by the way.
I was born when the Beatles had already gone their own way but how magical this music connects us all to the Beatles and they connect us all to eachother. These men knew more about Love than any Religion. Thank you for changing my Life spiritually and for giving it a meaning!
This quote by Ringo just hit me harder that a bullet shot: "Recording the new songs didn't feel contrived at all, it felt very natural and it was a lot of fun, but emotional too at times. But it's the end of the line, really. There's nothing more we can do as The Beatles."
all I can say is when this was released a new generation was introduced to the greatest of great bands. We will never have a group like the Beatles again.
I still prefer the original edit of the Real Love video. Having said that I understand why they've added clips - in particular the George ones, now that he's also dead.
This band broke up before I was even born yet I feel so connected to this song and their music in general. I can only imagine how the people who lived in those times feel when they hear this song...
i listen to metal an classical but they have the sound that is omniscient, they will not remain in the past, they are the future coming back towards us!
You must give respect to the founders of modern musical thought.
@Remulakfubar Sure! you're lucky! I was born in 63. and i listen to the Beatles and ex B since i was 7, thanks to my brother who was 15 at that time. I always would have been born at least 15 years earlier and in England. In France,, where I live, that was not the same feeling towards them.
I cryed during this video, just thinking of the beautiful music the beatles made together, i cant believe mark david chapman shot him, out of all the people in the world. Somebody who is so against violence is killed by the exact same thing he is against.
Me too osseman12 and I always do. The Beatles are my father the only ones I ever had. I was lucky I had four growing up. I learned love, dreams, hope and laughter and imagination from them.
Anyone else notice how much better a guitarist George became in the years after the breakup? On this song and "Free as a Bird," he is unbelievably musical (for lack of a better term). Not virtuosic, but just right. That was always his great strength, but I think that it became even greater with time.
AMAZING. i cried the first 20 or so times i heard this song and whats even more powerful is the story about how this came about on the anthology albums
It was such a beautiful thing they did for John. "Real Love" was one of the best songs he ever wrote, but it was just a demo when he died. Unfortunately, the remaining Beatles and Jeff Lynne felt the need to increase the pitch of John's voice to try to replicate a more psychedelic 60's feel.
