  • Again, the sound is just beautiful Michael. Beautifully played as well.

  • This is an incredible sound. Like nothing I've ever heard. I'd like to know if there is any concern for stability of this instrument? Over a few years of playing, might the pressure of all this sound and strings cause any cracks, neck warping or stress damage?

  • @imzvivace Thanks, I haven't had any problems with stability, I put two carbon fibre rods in the neck.

  • @JMichaelThames I'm just now familiarizing myself with your classical sprucetops. Very very beautiful craftsmanship. I'd love to try one if you ever swing through the NYC area.

  • Ticlano, I don't know how I get the lute sound, I think it's the design, and the Dminor tuning.

  • Dear Michael,

I'm quite impressed with your instrument. Marvelous sound!! Could I ask you something?

How do you achieve this "lute" sound? I've seen a lot of multi string and Alto Guitars, but you reach the lute like any other!! (sorry for the bad English)

    Thank you!!

  • you could also use harmonics on the other 6 strings :D

  • wonderful!

  • beautiful performance and guitar

  • after the 10 strings... you buy a harp

  • That is the most beautiful guitar I have yet ever heard! Thanks you playing is quite good!

  • He's a luthier. It says so right in the description. He built it himself. Just responding to "who built it?"

  • that was wonderful

  • Fantastic sound! *******

  • I love it. It really sounds like a lute with all of those bass strings. If you don't mind me asking who built your guitar and how much did it cost?

  • @jajacob410 lol, He built it! I'm trying to convince my wife to go on vacation without me so I can order one when she's not looking!

  • Fantastic guitar and guitarist! Really wonderful sound and thoughtful performance. Anyone who wants to know more about this guitar should look for Michael thames' longer video about his innovative (ironically for an instrument designed for baroque music) 13-string "Dresden" guitar. It was conceived to enable one to play Weiss et al baroque lute music written for 13-course lutes but here played on a classical guitar. It may not be "authentic" for purists, but neither would a grand piano playing

  • the strong sustain of the guitar causes the bass to get kind of murky with dissonance after such a long bass sequence..

  • beautiful

  • From Jose Sepulveda.....this guitar is the most beautiful-sounding guitar I have ever heard in my life. I would die to be able to AFFORD one of these! Unbelievable.......

  • Beautiful, Beautiful,&Beautiful,John

    Ciao,

    Claudio

  • i wonder how hard is it to bar that thing, u'll have to use ur whole arm

  • Sounds quite "lutish". Bravo!

  • this guitar looks extremely strange! it sounds wonderful but looks so odd. u obviously can only play the top 6 (or however many) strings as open. also, ive seen a 12-string guitar that doesnt even have a neck THAT wide. that is incredible..

  • Beautiful, just beautiful! Some day I really want one of these!

  • Love it

  • Hi, this was really nice! Beautiful tone, and on a new instrument.

How much does one of those beauties set one back?

More questions: Is the neck reinforced somehow? And, what, realistically, is the range of the upper 5 strings?

    Wonderful instrument.

  • Whoa...Impressive.

  • Excelente

  • Must be bugger to re-string this thing lol

  • Good Lord, a 13 string guitar?!

  • Wouldnt this be fun to restring and tune

    nicely played btw

  • Really beautifully played. You have a lovely touch.

  • i think the first six strings are tuned in D, A, F, C, G, D, one tone lower than tradititional tuning.

  • @cocoapicho Thanks to all for the wonderful comments! The tuning of the first 6 strings is from the first string down,,,,fdafda

  • @JMichaelThames what are the notes your playing for this?

  • WANT

  • I wonder which tuning this guitar has,, the same as a regular guitar, E,B,G,D,A,E for the first 6?,, Thanks,,

  • That guitar sounds beautiful, Michael. I like how you play this, too. I first learned this from a Frederick Noad book about 30 years ago and I tried playing it as fast as I could. Killed a lot of notes that way. Maybe I need to slow it down.

  • Bravo, belle interprétation,

    merci

  • Fascinating instrument and beautiful music !

  • Amazing

  • You are one of the very few persons that enjoy the ours of work as your hobby, complementing this beatifull and reguarding work by playing the instrument that you created at proffesional level!! . I am sure Bill Gates is very zealous of you!!!!! Fantastic instrument and your interpretation is at professional level. Do yuo have any job of this kind for me???

  • @AGLMIL I'm guessing English isn't your first language.

  • @AGLMIL .Yes, you are correct, but I belive that you understud what I said.

I am guessing that you are not a gentelman. A gentelman will not post such unnecessary comment.

  • Not exactly awe inspiring but hay, he built the dam thing!!

  • thats so awesome

    i wanna have it !!!

  • O.O

  • what an amazing sound thanx

  • wow! I have no words... Simply amazing

  • The guitar looks and sounds amazing...also the playing is great....a moment of repose in a restless world .

I also wonder about the bracing.....

  • Marvelous playing and luthiery!

  • jeez what a sound box!!! What kind of bracing does that guitar have and how did you make the neck? Can you do the same for a steel string guitar or would the body collapse?

  • What I like about this guitar is the sound. Mostly because it lacks that mellow tone that most of the extended-range classical guitars produce. I find these guitars totally incompatible with the baroque style.

However, this instrument does justice to the sound of baroque, getting close to the lute but retaining the properties of the classical guitar.

  • amazing sound!!

  • excelente guitarra , saludos.

  • Wow!

  • what a sound!

  • Fantastic sound and wonderful playing. Bravo!!!

  • This prelude sounds amazing on the guitar.this is phenomenal how wonderful the Dresen sounds.closest thing to an actual baroque lute.

  • How much more beautiful this is with the wider palette of notes from such a fine sounding intrument

  • Compliments on the playing too.

  • Phenomenal sound. Yes!
