Nice piece of work. But any one knows who are these people? Are they Iranian? Actually they don't look Iranian but they sing very good. If anyone has any information about this group, I'll be more than happy to hear.
The performance is not amazing, but maybe they don't claim to be the best performers. An arrangement would have improved the piece but probably needed some time, energy and expertise. Now I'd like to question the original song's quality. The melodies are simple and good for group singing in an elementary school, but the lyrics are just mediocre. first the bird (morgh) is asked to sing out loud about freedom and injustice but at the end it is asked to shut up and cut back on complaining.
the poem is written by Bahar, an archenemy of modern poetry (Nima suffered every day with poverty while Bahar enjoyed fame, he recited a poem for Reza Shah's throning). This poem has a 2nd segment (Band-e dovom) that is supposed to be sung with all the same melodies from the beginning to end. But it is so bad, un-artistic and heavy-handed that it is never performed and most folks don't even know about it. Not sure why this mediocre piece is so popular. bad taste?
goodcyrus, You need to get your history straight. Bahar's lips where actually sowed together for writing freedom related poems not liked by the darbar. His time was before Nima, so how could he have been an archenemy of modern poetry when it didn't yet exist! Furthermore, this song has become an icon of freedom and justice in our culture, exactly the opposite of what you say. This is a publicly read web site & it is irresponsible of us to write things we are not sure of.
People around the world can watch such clips and realize on their own how mediocre a composition like this is. What I write is of little consequence. All artisitc productions from Iran show whether we are an un-artistic nation. Nima (1895-1959) and Bahar (1886-1951) were within 9 yrs of each other. Natel Khanlary and Bahar were massive road blocks to innovation in poetry. Ali Dashty and Bahar both in Majlis had sympathies with Reza khan for years until he as ousted.
"First the bird (morgh) is asked to sing out loud about freedom and injustice but at the end it is asked to shut up and cut back on complaining." What? You don't get it do you?
Archenemy? Bahar is considered to had a huge role in development of modern persian poetry. Granted, Nima went through difficulties in publishing his poetry, but that doesn't take away anything from Bahar, and this wonderful poem. And please get off the high horse criticizing the ensemble trying to showcase persian poetry.
Persians are the most artistic and creative people on earth. Their music and darvish philosophy is rvered by everyone. Who needs Plato and Aristotle when there is Rumi and Hafiz. This composition and this performace are better than Mozart's Requiem performed by the Academy of Ancient Music directed by Christopher Hogwood on period instruments or Bach's cantata's directed of Rifkin. Fellow Persians, please wake up and get real. (Also read Nima's memoires.)
your sarcastic comments does nothing to justify your null believes... you are using the fact that western philosophers and western artist and musicians are revered in the west to prove that western philosophy are art is better than persian or other eastern ones.... you need to get real
I'm not going to make any comment on the piece since I don't know the background or who these people are. Regarding the poetry though, no matter who Bahar was, what he did or how he lived you should listen or read the words more carefully before you start critisizing! I think you should read some more poetry and study the persian language a bit more and then, maybe then, you start to understand what this poetry is all about.
My posts reflect my understanding of the Persian literature. did you even know about the 2nd half of the poem? Omr-e Haghighat beh sar shod ... Naaleye Ashegh Naaz Mashoogh, Har do dorough-o bisamar shod==Bad poetry. This poem turned out so bad because Bahar made it to fit the melodies. As Esmail Khoyi alludes cleverly to the Persians' false sense of pride: "man gereftam dastan-e bastanat rast bood..." Please do not deceive yourself ... and/or add meaning to a poem or your culture.
As always in persian poetry (and for any other forms of art from any country for that matter), you can understnd the poesi in different ways and eveyone might have their own interpretation. You can see Bahar's piece as a conversation between 2, the bird and a person. The first few lines are from the person asking the bird to free itself, folowed by the bird's answer of how sad its situation is, ended by the person's request to the bird to stop complaining and instead take some action!
Bahar's poetry, as you can read in my last comment, is a mirror of how our society or our people have thought through history. We always complain about what situation we are in rather than doing something about it! This was true in the 18 and 1900 and is, unfortunately, true still today. Morghe âshegh, sharhe hejrân mokhtasar.. mokhtasar kon!
you guys are a bunch of idiots...these american singers go out of their way to sing one of the most classic persian songs and we critique them.... give them some credit....god!!!!!!!!!!!!!
loooooooooooooooool be emam zaman ghassam ye 40 saanieyee yeravand khandidam. LOOOOOOOOOOOOOL oh man! ajab commenti dadi, reedi be halesshoon loooooooool mordam az khande
sometime, i just wonder. This is my first ever, and probably last, commenting in youtube, but i could not help myself. your comments are just worthless. can't we just enjoy things in life without stupidly trying to make hero/foe, angle/devil, etc out of just ordinary things, like performance by a bunch of nice people who put efforts in something!!! oh, please grow up.
They are Iranian... Don't you know Bahram OsqueeZadeh? The singers seem to be Iranian too... And there is nothing wrong with the accent, I beleive... They have tried their best...
Are you being dumb are are you naturally stupid. Don't try and start an arguement when you know that the singers are blonde and ARE NOT IRANIAN. Santoor guy is Iranian (but that is only one). ANYWAY!, I did say the 'singers were non-iranian'. You listen to Shajarian singing this poem and you will see how crude their accent is. AND I DID SAY "BUT GREAT EFFORT", so don't make it seem as if i think they are stupid. However, i know you are.
ohhhhhhhhh... take it easy... Of course Shajarian is the best... and they are not bad... your words are somehow discouraging... One day Shajarian will retire, and with such words, the traditional music will come to a standstill... And I did not see your "GREAT EFFORT" comment sorry for that... And finally... you can never say that there is something from Shajarian, the great master, that I have not heard... :D:D I'm a great fan of him
by the way, his son will replace him, if you were a great fan of his, then you should know that. The boy who sits next to him is his son. Did you know? "no"
Of course I know his son, Homayoun... I even know why his name is Homayoun :D:D But our traditional music needs more of such talents... I simply mean that we should not discourage them... :D:D That's it... Take it easy... :D:D
beautifully done.

@Ishattar You should at least know the name of the language being sung, Farsi - not Iranian. :)
