1. could carry heavier bombs
2. could make sharper turns
3. was technologically more advanced than any fighter jet in the world
4. was cheaper to manufacture than the F-16
the US refused to continue supporting it financially under fear that it will replace their F-16, the project was canceled and sold to china that today call it the J-10 and take credit for it.
@bsbssb1 you know that the lavi was in the testing fase just as powerfull as the f-16 in 2005 were and the testing fase was in 1986. so the plane was about 20 years ahead of the game, unfortunately the americans decided to stop funding the development because they were afraid israel wouldnt buy any more planes from america when the lavi was done.

It was apparently superior to the F16, could carry heavier payload, tighter turning etc. Just imagine what this thing could have evolved into over 20 or so years (like the merkava), probably would kick everythings arse out of the sky now, probably be stealth as well. @geofx09 This was a joint project between Israel and the US. Israel later cooperated with China giving birth to China's J10. If you compare the two you will notice the similarities. Experts say both J10 and F16 compare similarly.
as a solider in the israeli air force i can tell it could be a dream to work on such a fantastic plane so sad its price has reached too high and was unable to afford i think it got to 22 billions dollar. tho im sure one day it will be re activate

I think that Syria learned it's lesson in 1982 and this is why it is not buying or training it's pilots . In a way that is smart because they save themselves some money and they also manage to save face . in all fairness though, if i was an isreali engineer who spent the past 5 years putting my heart and soul into making my country's first fighter only to have it cancelled because the americans were selling f16s at super low prices, i would be pretty annoyed.

Israel played naughty, so the US stomped all over its pet project in retaliation. It was canceled from a lack of funding when the US refused to continue funding a project that would commentate with their F-16 in international sales. Considering all the US kits that was in that bird and that the program was largely funded by them - It's understandable that the Americans was somewhat pissed off over that the Lavi prototype allegedly ended up in China.
I am an Aerospace Engineer, and there are a lot of flaws to that plane, first of all, if the speed on landing was 120Kts the aircraft has an inability to slow down and it's turning capabilities as well as maneuvering are using old technology that can't exceed a certain pressure kilo pascals, making the aircraft less stable if used in mass numbers and in huge air battles. Overall it is a good aircraft but it's not the best.
I think the Lavi wouldn't have been much different than the F-16I Sufa and filled much of the same role in IAF. A good airframe, but not fantastic, more a overweight strike aircraft than a dog fighter - but with excellent electronics and avionics in the package
well what a mess a very good fighter plane witch was cancelled because of political reasons is now being developed by china air force manufacturers by the name "j10" and yes they didn't copy the lavi project they have bought the rights of this project

But i think the reason for this design have been discontinuated is for the same reason for the US government prohibited the sell of Kfirs to my country ( Mexico) in the 80´s and Latin America
Though it could hardly be called a 'copy' of the Eurofighter. Since the LAVI's first flight was only four months after that of the first flight of the EAP.
In that time it was, for Israel use. Israel buit as the USA didn't want to sell us the F-16, so we had to built somthing. After the US saw that, they asked us to stop, and sold us the F-16. It cost us billiard, to the technology was sold. To whom? China. I don't think it was smart policy what the US did in that times. I really don't understand it.

the lavi was abit better than f16 but it has almost same attacking power. usa sold them at half price to Israel, and israel cancled the project.

in all fairness though, if i was an isreali engineer who spent the past 5 years putting my heart and soul into making my country's first fighter only to have it cancelled because the americans were selling f16s at super low prices, i would be pretty annoyed.
so if some chinese guy was willing to pay big amounts of money so that my work would not go to waste and live on somewhere else, i would be very tempted...

Israel played naughty, so the US stomped all over its pet project in retaliation. It was canceled from a lack of funding when the US refused to continue funding a project that would commentate with their F-16 in international sales. Considering all the US kits that was in that bird and that the program was largely funded by them - It's understandable that the Americans was somewhat pissed off over that the Lavi prototype allegedly ended up in China.

I am an Aerospace Engineer, and there are a lot of flaws to that plane, first of all, if the speed on landing was 120Kts the aircraft has an inability to slow down and it's turning capabilities as well as maneuvering are using old technology that can't exceed a certain pressure kilo pascals, making the aircraft less stable if used in mass numbers and in huge air battles. Overall it is a good aircraft but it's not the best.

I think the Lavi wouldn't have been much different than the F-16I Sufa and filled much of the same role in IAF. A good airframe, but not fantastic, more a overweight strike aircraft than a dog fighter - but with excellent electronics and avionics in the package

well what a mess a very good fighter plane witch was cancelled because of political reasons is now being developed by china air force manufacturers by the name "j10" and yes they didn't copy the lavi project they have bought the rights of this project

the LAVI project was stopped because the US understood the the LAVI is better then any f-16 yet its also cheaper if the LAVI would have been made it would kill the f-16 and so the US pulled the plog on that project

Of course, if the spastic child that is israel would, for once, pay its own technology bills, The USA could stop changing israel's diapers, and who knows, that sense of personal fiscal responsibiltiy would see kikes spend money wisely. and not wastefully .... for once.

Right...why would US fund this plane if it competed directly with the F-16? That's most of the reason it was canceled Israel couldn't fund it and wanted US to help lol.

In that time it was, for Israel use. Israel buit as the USA didn't want to sell us the F-16, so we had to built somthing. After the US saw that, they asked us to stop, and sold us the F-16. It cost us billiard, to the technology was sold. To whom? China. I don't think it was smart policy what the US did in that times. I really don't understand it.
