I miss those days. Thing were just better when the British were there. More safe and more stable. Now you notice that things have changed. Life in Hong Kong right now is not as good as it was under Britsh administration. British was truly better. I hope they will come back again and kick the stupid communist back to Beijing.
Worst day in the history of Hong Kong, we lost our pride, our nationality, the soul of our city. now the bloody chinese flag flies over us. WHAT HAPPENED???!?!?!
Hong Kong has NOT lost it's pride. The soul of the city (that like you, I love) is only gone if the people of Hong Kong let it be so. Please listen carefully to Chris Patten's last speech. He urges you to go on, and all of us are willing you to succeed and keep the old HK values in your hearts.
Well, things have certainly all gone downhill since then, haven't they.
However, I would only call this the second saddest day in HK's history, but not the saddest day. The saddest day should be 25 Dec 1941, the day HK fell to the Japanese.
Unfortunately, due to the nature of the power that is now occupying Hong Kong, her people had no say in who was to govern them, I think that it is our ultimate failure to our brothers in Hong Kong that we did not fight for their right to choose to remain under Her Majesty's rule, for this I apologise most humbly. God save the Queen!
At the most they should have declared the N.T as Chinese territory under British administration.
China needed Hong Kong the way it was then in order for them to develop, but now the Communist Party is unable to prevent itself from destroying Hong Kong. Its in their nature - a way of self legitimization. Anyway, in 2047, Hong Kong will be folded into the PRC and they are trying to make that as easy as they can.
Britain betrayed 6 million souls to the Chinese. Native Hong Kongers have very little in common with their mainland neighbors. They don't even speak the same language. Hong Kong should never have been given to the Chinese. It could have functioned like Singapore even if the New Territories had to have been given up.
@UKGezr It was Mrs Thatcher's government that had betrayed you, not us British people. Sadly you have to accept Chinese rule cos due to 1984 treaty we cannot take back HK cos of promises.
Britain need China for trades and economic reasons and that's why we can't risk the Chinese tearing all trade treaties so had to keep off HK, also avoid any war with China cos of nuclear weapons they have and wishes to avoid war that may lead to endless WWIII that world don't want.
@DavBlc7 Then it would be better for them to betray us. Good for you. We are not worthy to become the cause of world war, which will only turn out millions of civilians' death.
I completely agree, we should have given back the NT (we should have NEVER leased them, we should have aquired them), and kept what was ours in perpetuality. If China didn't like, then too bad, so sad for them. ONe must remember that by the end of the last century, empires were not politically correct ( That's foolihsness that has ruined western civilization with its ideas of equality that DON'T and NEVER HAVE or NEVER WILL exist) any longer.
Patten was the only voice fighting for some fair result. His back was against Poisonous Percy of the Foreign Office. Martin Lee, for all his good intent, was not helpful. Finally the democratic body Patten helped put in place brought what? CHT and his lovely wife Betty, a grand sell out by HK's wealthy. If Gov Patten had FO support and a bit more time, things might have been quite different. As it is, know that we are all willing HK to succeed while keeping the old values alive
It is a irrecoverable curse to all Hong Kong people !!!
