I've been making lightsabers for years, at the moment I use a somewhat unpopular method that (long story short) involves making a white bar and then moving it around in After Effects, which gives me the motion blur I'm after.

The coloured glow, I learned how to do from a guy called Ryan Wieber.

yeah I've seen ryan vs. dorkman, and it's really good. I wonder why the method is unpopular? does he have tutorials online somewhere?

Oh his method is the most popular one by far. The difference is that doing it his way, you sort of draw the lightsaber using a mask. I just have a rotating white bar with motion blur. I only do it that way because I like the blur.

His videos should be fairly easy to find, anyhoo.
