There is so much love for Grandia 1 I see. When I was young (like 7??) my friend introduced me to Grandia 2 and we were obsessed with it. To this day it's my favorite RPG. However I've never been exposed to Grandia 1, so I have yet to see what the hype is about. But Grandia 2 will forever hold a very special place in my gaming heart.
you pretty sum up nearly all reasons why grandia 1 is (together with FF7) my most beloved game of all times. probably the only game that ever made me cry (farewell sue ;___; and ending )
Have you guys ever thought of doing a Shining Force series review? It's one of my personal favorites, but I never had the saturn or PS2 entries. I remember playing the first one until the early hours of the morning, and being late for school because of that. Didn't matter because my werewolf kicked major ass, and I had a whole legion of those centaur guys.
They actually have a character named Juston in Grandia Xtreme and he is an old adventurer, i think its a shout out to Justin from the original grandia. as he looks like an older version of him.
Grandia 1 is without question the best game I have ever played and the only game I rank higher overall than FF7. Music, characters, story, background, battle, equipment everything is just so perfect. The only problem I have with it was that there were only 3 optional dungeons. Grandia 2 was good but never gripped me in the same way that 1 did and unfortunately we never got number 3 over here in the UK so I have never had the chance to play that one.
@AnimeDoomOfNoD 3 was awesome I played it for like a week straight had an amazing story and the battle system was kickass you could like string together combo's with your characters was intense haa.
Rob's like *envy!!* when you show the Justin picture! XD I'm actually playing through II at the moment, I neglected it somewhat but am going to go back to it, perhaps re-start it and do a proper playthrough.. Number 1 looks great, I'll certainly check it out when I have the chance.. I find the problem with video games is there are far *too many* of them, even when you filter out the rubbish and focus on classics and of course RPG's are REAL time sinks - I'm still playing Persona 4! ^_^
What a great review. I played the first two Grandias on the SEGA-consoles and I fell in love with both of them AND of course the music. This incredible music. You guys are spot on about that. Working (even at that time already) in the creative part of the music business I pay a lot of attention to videogame music and this stands out -until today- as one of the games with the best soundtrack. Thanx for taking me back in time in such an entertaining and well done way!
I agree! Grandia was very different from other RPGs and still is really. It never looses its feeling of discovery and wonder. Definetly my number 1 RPG.
i decided to play Grandia based on your one line "Such a breath of fresh air". Man oh man what a breath of fresh air. Its been the rpg I have been searching for, for a long time. Thanks guys for the review and I can see how you could like it so much. I wish you could still play after you beat the game. Just walk around the world. Truly it is my favorite rpg I have played. The character growth even the ending I thought was great. Now I'm 36 and glad I did not pass it this one up.
I am a hardcore, diehard Grandia fan through and through. It may sound silly, but playing the first one at a tender, young age, around the ages when hormones start to change, really changed my life. The amazing characters and their development, the lands, the masterful score by Noriyuki Iwadare, the battle system. Everything hit home and every Grandia game since is emblazoned into my memory. Good times. I have to say, though, Grandia 3 felt unfinished and rather generic. Lacked GA's magic touch.
Grandia 1 was a game I didn't have the pateint to beat. My 2 problems with this game were how easy the battles were, so easy that it got a little boring sometimes. The other problem was that on dungeons, forest or something, it was easy for me to get lost and took me too long to finally finish that part in the game. Since there's no map and the environments tend to look the same, it was disorienting and annoying to keep moving the camera to figure out where to go.
Also one of the best most intimate scenes I've ever seen in a game (towards the end of Disc 1) is between Justin and Feena when they're alone on the boat and the voice acting and dialogue felt so genuine and human, just WHOA Grandia will remain in my heart and mind for a long time as one exceptional gaming experience on a level of Planescape Torment :)
@TheMarine250789 I find it so interesting that SO many people feel so strongly about this game series, especially the first, like myself. There's just something about it I suppose, some perfect blend of every emotion that strikes deep. It'd brilliant. A lot of people dislike the voice acting however and I really don't know why. The voice acting felt real, organic and yes, human. It didn't really sound like voice actors trying to get it perfect, it sounded natural. =)
@MegaMacTV Yeah, I've noticed the same things and Grandia was released on the Saturn in 97, it's actually older than many other famous RPG's and it was one of the earliest attempts at voice acting. (MGS had superb voice acting)
I think it just adds a lot more human connection compared to just text boxes. ALL games have flaws and I'm keen on figuring them out, most games excel at some area but falter in others and in the end it's about the overall package, something few games ever accomplish.
@TheMarine250789 Me too, but that´s where my adventure ended. No disc 2 :( I will play it in the future one time again just to see this beautiful scene again.
I'm currently playing towards the end of Grandia, I got espxe 1.7 which works with superb graphics for the sole reason to play Grandia which I picked as the first choice out of choosing all the available games for the PS1.
I've been playing games for 11 years, I love Grandia on so many levels, it IMPRESSED me over a decade since it's release. My only gripe with the game is that the monsters are to weak and the difficulty to easy but the characters are amazingly engaging...Feena <3
If you actually gave a damn about Grandia that much you'd buy the original games and a cheap PS1 console online.
So gtfo with your PS1 emulator shit. It is one thing to emulate old consoles or games that are prohibitively expensive, but another to emulate something that still is available widely (PS1 and PS2 consoles).
Would also make a difference if the emulation weren't complete shit and an insult to the original games.
Played the original PS1 Grandia at least a decade ago as a rental from Blockbuster or some similar rental store. I knew it was something fantastic but sadly never really got into it in the few hours that I played it. It was very unique, colorful, and playful, but it didn't really seem to be all that compelling for me as a teen at the time. FF7 of course was so popular partly because of the angsty teens that most players could relate to one way or another.
It's kind of funny, but I really never got into Grandia 1, I borrowed it from a friend and never returned it (sorry!). But it was too childish for me to really get into, I only spent a few hours playing it.
Grandia 2 I loved, and still have it for DC. I never got that into it - you don't mention, but they had a PC port as well, and GOD it was better - the graphics, the load times, everything. I maxxed out my save file back in the day getting and finishing everything on the PC version.
I wasn't a big fan of Grandia, but I did beat it, and it was pretty good. I don't think I will ever play another Grandia game again though unless they bring back the original characters, but almost assuredly they won't. Which is a shame because I would love to see how Justin and Feena grew up.
Even though i am a FF fan, i must admit Grandia is better then most ff game and the only game i could give 10/10, damn i just wish i could erase my memory of Grandia and play through it like i did years ago =D, ahhh wonderful times.
Nice sketch. I liked the original Grandia a lot, though for me the 3rd one really took a dive, in story and characters, and voice acting as well. The 2nd one was okay.
@riachupwns £6.29 to be exact...and as soon as the PS Store is up...GET IT! I bought it back in November and played it through and it is now one of my favourite games...in my top 5 easily. Argh, I want to delete my memory of it and play it again, sooo good :)
@Terramax Thanks a bunch =) I am watching the video series now, and it is surprising. Saturn could have had a much greater impact if it had shown these graphics off...
Actually I hope that Grandia 3 wasn't the last in the series. I mean now-a day's it's Tales, Tales, Tales. I would love to see a Grandia 4 and also Suikoden 6. (I'm also a Suikoden fan too ^^; )
Based on how much you loved Grandia and how you were all into the series I felt I would give it a shot (PSN PSP). I'm about 29hrs on it and into Disc 2 and my impression was this. "WOW what breath of fresh air". Its the rpg I have been longing for. I grew up on N64 and missed out on PSX games. Now I'm a 35 Video Game Artist and I love Grandia. Thank you for this review otherwise I might have missed out on this. You gave me a part of my childhood back. Grandia is so good and Justin and Feena rock
I happened to buy this game just by luck.. haven't heard anything of it but the graphics got my intention.. when i got home and started playing... well.. let's just say that Grandia is always on my favorite top3 RPG list.
You have no idea how jealous I am of you meeting the character designer and getting that picture, haha. I think I'd follow him and gush at him if I happened to meet him too. XD Thanks for this great review! :D I LOVE Grandia 1 and am a little way into Grandia 2 but sadly they never released anything later than those in Europe. I wish they'd released Parallel Trippers or Digital Museum outside of Japan. ;A;

i recently downloaded Grandia a few weeks ago and i LOVE IT! omg i am actually dedicating my 199th written review to two game arts games the first being Grandia
I haven't really played much rpgs but I most say that the Grandia series was the best. I started with Grandia 2, then 3, and xtreme and now the first game. I have only completed Grandia 2 and it's still my favorite of the series since the graphics, storyline and characters was so amazing in that game. Gotta love it
"Grandia" seems like a plain RPG to me. I did however enjoyed the battle system, but I wish it wasn't so much stop and go. It would be cool if RPGs incorporated the spell leveling system found in "Grandia." "Legend of Legaia" has a spell leveling up system but further skills cannot be acquired though it. The spells only get stronger.
Anyway, "Grandia" was the easiest RPG I've ever played. The story was so boring I nearly feel asleep. Luckily, the character were entertaining.
@poolmav2008 i know what your saying about the story, when i bought it i was like wtf is this? how could this even be worth £6? ive only got outside the city because im not sure i should bother playing it, its attempt at humour is pitiful and i hate the characters there just so mediocre, i mean the protagonist actually goes LOOKING for an adventure, adventures are supposed to be the result of the butterfly effect not somthing you go looking for
I'm sure this has been brought to your attention already but you didn't mention anything about Grandia Online. Its pretty new and in japan only. I actually have the 2xCD soundtrack for that game
i first played grandia and it was fantastic then after finishing it i played the ff7, and i say to my self what the fuck ff7 is a crap compared to grandia.
That depends on how you play, if you try to go straight I promise you'll wasted, but if you take the time you need to collect all the mana eggs and train Justice and Feena in all the elements of magic they can learn the generic battles can seem pretty easy, the boss battles, not so much. In fact the boss battles can get rather difficult at times. All and all I'd say the game has a moderate difficulty level.
@WiseStrategist Compared to most JRPGs, Grandia is a very easy game. And that's saying something. Even if you're underleveled, the game doesn't offer too much difficulty especially when it comes to the normal enemies.
However, if you're looking for difficulty, then you should play Grandia ReDux (check my channel). It not only increases the difficulty but also adds new items, abilities etc... More fans need to give it a try. : )
@bagelsofDEATH you wont be disapointed! i still got the first and second one for ps1/ps2 and i also have grandia 1 on an emulator aswell. Just so addictive!
@TheRift101 In my opinion, the first. To me the story and characters were more fun to get to know and the atmosphere was just excellent. Besides, Gadwin > Mareg
Oh god. now because of you grandia has become like a disease to me. I can't stop playing the game after starting until it's been about 5 hours (not counting my breaks). I just love the characters so much there so cool and funny. Thanx for introducing me to the series.
Damn, you got a sketch from the actual character designer? That's probably one of the most golden moments in your life, dude. I never played any of the Grandia games, but I went and bought a copy off from Ebay, so I should be getting it soon. I heard great things about the game, so I thought, "Why not?" and I bought it.
The only Grandia game I've played is the second one for the DreamCast, and I'm proud to say that I still own it. I remember really enjoying it when I went through it, but I can't really recall much of it to be honest. I remember it having an (at the time) somewhat innovative battle system and the latter half of the game seemed kind of anti-religious.
I might have to play through it again some time. And, perhaps, check out the PS2 releases! Love these series videos. Can't wait to see more.
grandia sounds like an over head shooter if you just hear the name and don't see any footage of the game.
grandia seems to be for a following audience so the style slowly becomes more grown up because the series seems to be made for people who are kids that started with the original so that when the darker more grown up games came out the original audience are dark and grown up.
Damn...awesome retrospective guys. I praised the heavens when Grandia was announced for the PSX, because despite it's flaws, it was coming out over here. Just seeing some of those cut scenes gave me chills. You guys have earned a sub without a doubt. Can't wait to watch the rest of your vids!
Great video almost brought a tear to my eye when i was remembering the first grandia. Of course i have played the others as well but the firts one still holds a special place in my heart.
just like rob man i also got grandia on the psx the xmas it came out. last week i bought it again on psn. it's actually aged pretty well aside from the voice acting which was crappy even in 1999. the final boss in grandia 3 took me nearly an hour to finish. i took a smoke break halfway through lol. thanks for the upload, the world needs to know more about grandia! ive heard a rumor about grandia online but lets have a proper grandia 4 on the ps3 please!
Hey, Johnny i have a request if you don't mind. Have you ever played this PSX classic "The Legend of Dragoon"? Well, it seems like this game has been forgotten over time and is a very excellent RPG(Battle System, Music, and Story). Seeing as you as you're a huge RPG fan you probably have played this game and if you have could you make a video about it so more people can remember and discover and excellent RPG for it's time and why it deserves a Sequel, Prequel, and/or Remake.
Review the whole shining force series starting with the genesis versions up to whatever came last including ps2 releases NEO and EXA ... those were awesome.
Thank you for the video guys :) I really enjoyed it!
A little question:
I just picked up Grandia II, and was wondering if you think I should get number 1 and play that first? THe only problem about Grandia I, is that it's pretty expensive!
Funny that you guys do this review now; I just bought Grandia Digital Museum off Ebay! Grandia on the Saturn is a true masterpiece with its story and battle system. I really want to try G3; its difficulty intrigues me.
3:52 - I actually enjoyed Evolution 2 and Skies of Arcadia about 8 times as much as Grandia II. Both have far more challenging and stimulating battles, better stories, and more of that classic RPG feel. Grandia II is pretty much an RPG for people who have never tried RPGs before.
Grandia 2 the best grandia.... ilove grandia series, grandia 3 and 1 were ok, but extreme, i cannot stand the fact of being always in dungeons and no outside world....and yesss if you wanna play grandia2 go for the dreamcast version much betta...
I remember finishing Grandia 1 and 2 the year after I left highschool. I took the whole year off just to dedicate it to video games, mainly JRPG's. I was so obsessive back then that I finished the original Grandia with all of my characters completely maxed out (did that mind bending bonus tower and everything). I remember the final boss died in like 2 hits I was way overpowered. Grandia 2 was awesome too. Great video.
I never knew that Grandia was originally a Sega RPG. Then again, when you think of Sega and RPGs, you think Phantasy Star. Great review, and thanks for the info.
I remember working at Game Stop and it came out on the Dreamcast and I so wanted to buy a DC! Then later back in 2003 people were trying to find that game which was sold at a very high priced used! Anyways I enjoy the videos!
i first saw Grandia at a mates house, was really astonished at the time as it was the first RPG i seen wich had voices. Thankfully i have added that to my collection now and will play it in the near future and funny thing is i also bought that Parallel Trippers for £5 ($7-8) the other week myself out of curiousity.
Nice review guys. I only got to play G1 but alas, I never finished it. Got about 80% through it I'd assume. It was pretty compelling. My PS1 went in the pawn shop and I never saw it again. I regret. :(
At any rate, keep up the reviews and nostalgia! gotta love it!!
Personally I like Grandia because of the script. The plot utterly sucked, and godforbid you go to a dungeon that had a really bad song. It really does suck (Played the PS ver). However, I had to admit I like the Theme Song (OP), and the Ambush song more then the Battle song tbqh. The ending didn't please me honestly, but I'd love to replay this again on SS (Sega Sat) hearing the VA in Japanese.

And I agree, the music is wonderful ! ^^

You have no idea how jealous I am of you meeting the character designer and getting that picture, haha. I think I'd follow him and gush at him if I happened to meet him too. XD Thanks for this great review! :D I LOVE Grandia 1 and am a little way into Grandia 2 but sadly they never released anything later than those in Europe. I wish they'd released Parallel Trippers or Digital Museum outside of Japan. ;A;

Luckily, the character were entertaining.
poolmav2008 1 year ago
@poolmav2008 i know what your saying about the story, when i bought it i was like wtf is this? how could this even be worth £6? ive only got outside the city because im not sure i should bother playing it, its attempt at humour is pitiful and i hate the characters there just so mediocre, i mean the protagonist actually goes LOOKING for an adventure, adventures are supposed to be the result of the butterfly effect not somthing you go looking for
Nintendomanic 1 year ago
@poolmav2008 im not sure if i should even bother playing on to the ruins its humour is awful but i also liked the battle system.

I love RPGs from Japan.
Especilly the ones that start off all innocent and bright at the start, and the characters grow with you.
I also remember that Skies of Arcadia on the Dreamcast and that was my first Japanese RPG experience and I really enjoyed it.
Sadly the Dtandia series was never released into my country of Australia. so I think I missed out on something special.

I'm thinking about getting the first grandia from the PSN but I hear the game is really easy and provides no challenge?
RapturousxPoet 1 year ago
@RapturousxPoet
WiseStrategist 1 year ago
@WiseStrategist Compared to most JRPGs, Grandia is a very easy game. And that's saying something. Even if you're underleveled, the game doesn't offer too much difficulty especially when it comes to the normal enemies.
However, if you're looking for difficulty, then you should play Grandia ReDux (check my channel). It not only increases the difficulty but also adds new items, abilities etc... More fans need to give it a try. : )

@henry666hotmail Why? Because u can spend fucking 100 hours in it and then do it over all again without getting ultra bored like in other games.

The reason that Grandia 1 is on PSN now is a reason to buy PS3 instead of 360 lol.

Can't wait to see more.

grandia sounds like an over head shooter if you just hear the name and don't see any footage of the game.
grandia seems to be for a following audience so the style slowly becomes more grown up because the series seems to be made for people who are kids that started with the original so that when the darker more grown up games came out the original audience are dark and grown up.
sorry for LONG message.

just like rob man i also got grandia on the psx the xmas it came out. last week i bought it again on psn. it's actually aged pretty well aside from the voice acting which was crappy even in 1999. the final boss in grandia 3 took me nearly an hour to finish. i took a smoke break halfway through lol. thanks for the upload, the world needs to know more about grandia! ive heard a rumor about grandia online but lets have a proper grandia 4 on the ps3 please!

A little question:

But what do you think? :)

@Ko009 But, yes, if you MUST play this game try to cut your volume down low when entering any dungeon and esp any english VA.
