  • I wish Youtube would make a repeat button already

  • Eccentricity

  • @ zorfalx cont- thats awesome that your grandfather played franch horn in the boston symphony! my great grandfather played drums in new orleans in the 1920s-40s...i think that musicians of the past would be overwelmed by the music that has come out in the past 60 years. theres so much more of it then there was then and music/composing has been taken to another level.

  • @zorflax - that is awesome that youre going to a show with your son! im thinking about taking my mom or prob my dad to a show. i follow a lot of bands on tour and catch as many shows as i can. it is an important part of my life that i want to share with my parents. or atleast expose them to. this is a beautfiul song, so well composed. sufjan is truly a genius. a little bizzare but thats what makes him unique....that is awesome that your grandfather played french horn. leaving another comment

  • I caught this on the original PBS "Austin City Limits" show one week and have appreciated the fact I did ever since. Each song was a knockout. Besides all playing and/or singing beautifully, it seemed they were having a heck of a lot of fun, too.

  • just rediscovered this song..I love it AND they are all wearing wings!!!! I want wings!

  • If I'm not mistaken all four members of OSSO String Quartet (the ones that played the string quartet version of the entire Enjoy Your Rabbit album originally by Sufjan Stevens) are in the string section of his band in this performance.

  • @reishvedaur probably. I also know one of the violists, she is my viola professor at TX State University. She plays with a quartet called the tosca strings who have also played with Vampire Weekend and Arcade Fire and David Byrne (from talking heads) to name a few :)

  • 1. Did anybody else notice that their color scheme is the Star Trek color scheme, where Sufjan is wearing yellow (commander) and everybody else is wearing red (expendable)? 2. OH! Shara Worden, OH! OH! OH!

  • i showed this to my dad and he said it reminded him of Elton John. I was like eeewwww!

  • my dad said the same thing.

  • anyone know where i can get this dvd????

  • How can he afford to employ so many people?

  • @centerforce2 they probably pay HIM to be in his band. i know i would.

  • Is that Dean Ween playing the trumpet?

  • This orchestration is so fucking incredible. So simple and yet so perfect. Damn I wish I could write something like this ...

  • Sufjan and Shara's voices were meant to be together.

  • The 6 people who don't like this must have had a bad experience in Jacksonville, and hearing the name brings back painful memories. There's no other reason I can think of that someone could not love this.

  • @jamesdavies67 Agreed. Wow.

  • damn, this guy is just awesome...he has fun and is incredibly talented.

  • shara worden looks like she's having such a good time in this vid

  • this is so great

  • They're doin' it.

  • ACL....!!!

  • YEEEEEAH!

  • stop clapping you fools!!

  • I've heard this is about my home town, Jacksonville, IL. Great song!

  • excelente música.

  • Does anybody know, what that tiny piano looking instrument , the girl is playing, is called?

  • @mathiasgrunge it's a celeste

  • @mathiasgrunge It sounds like a Glockenspiel (don't know if that's the right term in English). I think it's just a Glockenspiel with a wider range, and you don't play it with sticks, but the keys are attached to hammers, which hit the metal plates.

  • @driesbanierink That would be a celeste (aka celesta), if what you describe is in fact what it is! Look it up on wikipedia, it's quite the beautiful instrument.

  • @jonbashjonbash Yep you're right! I think that's what it is. thanks!

  • I find it totally ridiculous that all this, plus the rest of Illinois all came from just one guy's head... amazing stuff.

  • I sometimes like to think that Shara Worden and Sufjan have a thing going on. They could have incredibly talented babies.

  • Ending piano runs....

  • I think i would actually kill to see him live...

  • @leeeeuwtje I'll get you some tickets if you kill some people I know.

  • @N6688846993 It's a deal.

  • will some one tell me why people keep having their sufjan videos removed :(

  • Five people aren't going to the capitol line

  • Comment removed

  • what i would give to see him live....come to london, sufjan!

  • @mrsalbinorhino I wish! I wish!

  • Shara Worden. Enough said...

  • @WhereMightWaldoB Oh yes... : )

  • @WhereMightWaldoB She's so beautiful :D

  • Sufjan. In Canada. Tomorrow.

  • Who knew that "folk" music could groove so hard?!

  • This took my breath away! My son has invited me to Sufjan's concert in Boston (in November) and we are going! (He's 21 I'm 55!) My grandfather, an immigrant from Italy, played the French Horn for the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the early l900's. I am sure that this music would even make him proud!!!

    ! What am amazing video!

  • A Short Reprise for Mary Todd, Who Went Insane, but for Very Good Reasons

  • i never knew his name was prenounced 'Soofyan' XD

  • Best. Period!

  • this is the best thing i have ever seen on youtube besides piano cat

  • @moneyguy66 Her name is Shara Worden, look her up - her solo stuff is amazing

  • Amazing... and it just wouldn't be right without A Short Reprise for Mary-Todd at the end.

  • Just PHENOMENAL.

  • so great to see bands that don't limit themselves to guitar, bass, and drums. beautiful string section.

  • chills.

  • This song turned me on to Sufjan Stevens. It's amazing.

  • Does anyone know when this performance was filmed? (BTW, Shara is so hot in this)

  • @deacblues

    ~Austin City Limits~

    Taped 09/17/2006 - Aired 11/04/2006

  • @deacblues It's from the Austin City Limits appearance.

  • Ummm...where's the song about Camargo Sufjan?

  • I would die to see him live. I would die and go straight to heaven that night.

  • Grooves and layers....ooooh YEAH!

  • Gotta love the aviators.

  • Not racisct at all.

  • amazing!

  • So damn good. I love this song.

  • ^w^

  • This is amazing! Odd that I've listen to this several times on my way to Jacksonville, IL

  • I hope I get to see him live one day. Amazing!

  • this is so much funkier live! love it!

  • creativity + talent + initiative

  • Incredible! Evidence than Musical Artistry is alive, well and thriving, thanks Sufjan!

  • My Brightest Diamond indeed!

  • is that the gril from My Brightest Diamond?

  • This dude rocks! He is from one of the best music scenes in America--Detroit.

  • Holy... they rock this song live. LOVE the wings. These people are actually talented! And lastly, Sufjan is so incredibly sexy in his aviators. Yum.

  • The chinese butterfly brigade upgraded to sun glasses!

  • wow. just wow!

  • This is a GREAT song!

  • Does he usually have this many musicians when he performs live or was this a one off thing?

  • Every time I've seen a video of him performing live, it has been this big a band or bigger.

  • not normally BUT his songs need it..otherwise totally stripped down like the KCRW Performance.. this is the best version of this marvelous track..this should be propelled to legend status... i've seen some good music in my 40 years and have 100 gigs > of music so , for this to stand out it has to be good AND IT IS!

  • i love the wings

  • Man, this sucks. Just kidding, I hate when those pricks get on here just to say a band sucks. This song is amazing. One of the few bands that sound better live than on recording.

  • i live in jacksonville, IL. This song is great too!

  • it was on Austin City Limits on one of our local schannels

  • What show is this?Is there a DVD?

  • Um, AMAZING!!!

  • Love Sufjan's voice in this performance. Sweet as honey.

  • This is incredible!!! This is my favorite song anyways, but this performance is epic! What I would have paid to be at this concert. Thank you for posting it.

  • who is the name of the woman at 0:25 , singing along and tambourine? I swear she is in another band. I love jacksonville and I was so honored to see sufjan live in chicago of all places..haha

  • From the band....My Brightest Diamond

  • Her name is Shara Worden. She's from My Brightest Diamond, and sings on the new Decemberists record. She's one of my all time favorite singers.

  • Very, very nice.

  • That was... worth watching. And deffinately worth hearing!

  • lol some parts remind me of led zeppelind black dog xD but yea THIS GUYS AWESOME!!! :D

  • isso é de algum dvd?

  • Saw this on Austin City Limits on PBS.

  • Try singing the chorus to "Les Fleur" by Minnie Ripperton over the start of this. Fit's perfectly.

  • es preciosa

    me encanta!!!

  • very very awesome.

anyone know any songs like jacksonville, by other bands?

  • absolutely amazing, period.

  • I enjoy me both of some Sufjan Stevens and Marilyn Manson.. regardless of how slutty that might make me sound if taken out of context. I find both can make me think 'deeply' on different sorts of things.

Also, I find that they both from time to time can do some rather danceable music. And especially at the part in this song starting around 3:11 the urge to dance is irresistible pretty much.

  • Jammin'

  • troll alert! troll alert!

  • This is great stuff

  • great song. it's nice to see real musicians that actually write and play their own music

  • These retards appeared on PBS?! Goddamn! This is only further proof that they suck ass!!

  • where was this taken?

  • Austin City Limits (the show not the festival)

  • ok, cool. cause i remember i saw My Morning Jacket on PBS at the same place.

  • Why do you have a problem with Shara Worden wearing a boy scout uniform when Marilyn Manson ran an advertising campaign wearing fake breasts?

  • No need to fight. Just go watch some Marylin Manson videos and everyone will be happy.

  • AyshLoundou;

Everyone tells me this(some in friendly terms some in not so friendly terms)and I have still to discover who this Marylin Manson is! I've heard of the brilliant, beyond belief talented Marilyn Manson but I've yet to hear anything by this Marylin Manson. Maybe you can shed some light as to whom he or she is because everyone else who's heard of Marylin Manson cannot.

  • Sorry friend, I'm a Sufjan kinda guy. I don't dabble in the Marylin Manson. Maybe you should find out for yourself what MM is like. Heck, you're already on YouTube! Stop wasting your precious time on this Stevens goof (who you seem to dislike) and type Manson in the search bar! Enlighten yourself homie!

  • Well, I guess you're right. You're argument is much too intelligent for me to dispute.

Why don't you get the fuck off of this board if you hate Sufjan Stevens so much? Go to back to your shitty emo music.

  • ya man, tell him, sufjan is one of the last truley original artists

  • sufjan stevens AND marilyn manson are both great. sufjan is truly original and manson is not emo, but very sociopolitical.

can the both of you just stop the dispute? you both like different music. no need to argue about it. just have an open mind and maybe accept that not everyone that disagrees with you is a "slut" or has a shitty taste in music, ok?

  • jaboa0is0insanity;

Hey, I just posted a comment with my opinion it's NOT my fault that some retards have to get their panties in a wad over it!

  • marilyn manson sucks, get with the program you stupid goth. go blog about your feelings.

  • SmokingFlip;

At least Marilyn Manson has talent unlike these retarded losers who dress like Boy Scout Butterflies and mumble to horribly played music! YOU get with the times you retarded, moronic, tone deaf wasted cum shot! If anyone sucks it's your mother for not aborting you all most three decades ago!

  • ha ha, that's funny, i bet marilyn manson wore this outfit (which by the way, it's not a boy scout uniform, it's a marching band uniform) you stupid goths would that was so dark, and he was making a brilliant statement. face it all you goths are, are old school emos.

  • Listen you retarded, low life, cum guzzler(SmokingFlip); first off you're a miserable pussy blocker. I also do NOT live in my parents' basement(I live in Florida and there are no basements in Florida you stupid retard)but with my fiancee. I'm sorry but because you're such a horrible human being you'll never EVER experience marriage! Who care what the fuck these retards in the above video are wearing their music still sucks ass just as much as you reek of ass!! Now piss off worthless cum shot

  • How come all your responses have something to do with cum? That's what sucks about goths, they use different wording to say the same comebacks, unoriginal bastards. I guess that's why they all worship shitty music like marilyn manson. by the way, fuck your fiance, i bet she's another stupid goth and that's the only reason you two are together. colombine looking douchebag. (see what i say doesn't have to involve cum)

  • Can anyone tell me what key this song is in?

  • sheer genius

  • sufjan is amazing =]

  • GREAT SONG! Mad Soul groove.

There is something special about the way he composes his music. It reaches me.

  • When I caught the whole Austin City Limits

set I became an instant fan!

  • God, how I love this song.

  • Ya! I was trying to find the Austin version of Jacksonville. Good work.

  • ammoman23;

If you hate YouTube so much than why bother to comment and favor videos? There's one over all word to describe you and that word is hypocrite!

  • Ha! Wow, followed me here? You must have an abundance of important things to do in your day! The subtle difference that prevents me from being a hypocrite, is that I have not watched thousands and thousands of videos in 6 months. That is like calling Gandhi and a glutton the same because they have both eaten food.

  • Yup, you truly are a loser ammoman23! Why not stop being such a miserable goddamn hypocrite and go find your towns prostitute(your mother)and go get laid? It's quite obvious that the only one that would want any sort of relationship with you is one that you have to pay!

  • I love boy scout butterflies! Also, that was absolutely brilliant.

  • Jville representin'! lol

  • i didn't like this song at first, but after giving it more listens i've learned to really appreciate it...it's sooo musical

  • how cool is he?!!

haha at 0:52, "follow my heart"

    he is so cool!

  • how cool do Sufjan and My Brightest look on this vid. Ace version of a great song!

  • By far the best version of this song. The trombone makes it.

  • loove this song.

  • Man I just love this tune....this version is better than others....I first saw it on ACL...very catchy...humming it all day. A new generation has command of the music and I'm cool with this kind....thanks for posting it...
