On the day that post was made I had 6 feeders out and only two of them were strawberries. The other 4 were quarts with 8 holes.
Today, three years later, I have 7 quarts out with 8 holes each and EVERY ONE of them is twice as crowded as the one in the video. I refill the 7 quarts daily, thats almost 2 gallons of sugar water a day!
I dont think it would be possible to put out enough feeders to satisfy their feeding frenzy.
Ahh, that's awesome, but please get another feeder for them. They are just too competitive and when you see them swarming like that you need to help them out a little bit by getting another feeder (or three).
Ah ok, well that's as good as you can do I guess. I just hate to see it so crowded that they can't all get a chance to feed. Some people will just leave up one or two feeders during conditions like these and that makes it more tough for them as they are preparing for their long migration.
I use Cyberlink Power Director, a great video editing program. It has a backlight correction feature to fix that problem. GREAT shots of the hummers getting ready to head across the Gulf. I'm in Little Rock, and ours just left southward last week. Godspeed, little ones!
Ours are STILL here on 25 October in small numbers. They first arrived on the 3rd of August, a month EARLY and they are still here 10 days LATER that usual. Thanks for the tip on software, I will check it out.
If anyone can help[ me with color correcting my videos I would like to hear from you. I have software to do still shots, but none to do videos. The problem is that when shooting them from below with a sky being the back light makes the foreground too dark. The information is there and can be brought out in a still shot, But I have nothing that will do an entire video.
That old video doesnt show the real story. With 7 feeders up I am counting as many as 50 birds at eash one at any one moment. I am estimating that in 6 weeks we have fed about 45,000 birds.
Our location is on the north shore of Corpus Christi Bay and it is the jumping off place for their migration to Mexico. We are now going through 5 pounds of sugar a day!!! Today, the 20th of September, has been the heaviest I have ever seen. I have several new videos but need help color correcting them.
Today we have up 7 feeders and there is a swarm at each one. They started coming this year on the 3rd of August, a month early. Usually they arrive on the 3rd of September, my birthday, and last year continued until the 14th of October. Since they started early this year (maybe they are expecting an early winter up north?) I expect them to be gone bu the 15th of September. We are going through a gallon of sugar water every two to three days.
Wow this is amazing. I thought i had alot of hummers but i was wrong because the most i ussulay get at one time is about 3 or ocassionally 4. Great footage!
i got a feeder out rite now and since the birds from the north are migrating, they are loading them up like mad. i can see two out there now looking throught the window from my computer.
There are already FIVE feeders. This is just one of them. If you look closely you will see more hummers around a feeder that is behind the column on the left.
ahhhhhhhh ok!!! They seem to love the strawberry feeder a lot as im sure they love the others you have there. I used to have a strawberry feeder, but with the strong winds during monsoons, it was knocked off and broke. I currently have 4 feeders up :) happy hummie watching!! :)
I have that same feeder-4 of them. I hung them out on the canopy frame of my swing. I don't plan to replace the canopy, and decided to see if I can attract hummers to the feeders and be able to sit in my swing while they drink the nectar.I'm glad the feeders are red, because I do not use food coloring in the nectar.
Put up some more feeders. I have one of those strawberry feeders and they only have 2 or 3 ports. Put up more feeders and you will have even more hummers , they will go where the food is.
HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a hummming bird feeder and I only see one at a time! There must not be a lot of natural necter they can get where you live or something...
Its not that there is not a lot od nectar so much as it is the first/last stop after/before a 600 mile over ocean trip to southern Mexico. When they get here in September (this video was done in September) they are on their way south to Mexico. The next 600 miles after my house are over the Gulf of Mexico. In the spring when they return to the north our house is the first sight they get of land.
When I took this video I had to go out and sit quietly. After a while they came back to the feeder and I pressed the record button quietly. in Corpus Christi, TX. This is their last feeding as they prepare to leave on a 600 mile jorney over water to Mexico or their first feeding point as they get back from that trip in the spring. They spend the winter in Mexico. Thease pictures were taken in the Fall they were feeding heavily to build up a store of fat for the 600 mile over water trip.
AWESOME! I love to see them swarming to feed. Only place in New York I have ever seen then swarm is in a tiny little place called Indian Lake, NY : ) Thanks for sharing this beautiful view with us all : ) Meg Pixel
That's beautiful. You are one lucky fellow.

We are going through a pound of sugar a day during the peak of the season, refilling some feeders several times a day.
