One of my fav speakers, finishing the book tonight or something. The Element is a inspiring book and i think everyone should read it.Go grab it if u find this video interesting . There is a lot more in the book.
Unfortunately the university old cronies in their ivory towers don't want it to change because they are sitting pretty. They (deans etc.) earn a lot of money and have a lot of power where they sit. Some HE's in the UK are a form of indoctrination and debt slaving. Either you believe in their way of thinking or you get a low grade or you get kicked out. Some HE institutes have become so narrow minded in this respect that they will do ANYTHING to resist this change.
"........and this cultural standardized testing, i think, is erm.......... depriving teachers of the essential freedom they need to do their job properly." ----- 9 minutes to 9 minutes, 10 seconds
Some teachers (or most), would prefer the simplicity of standardization as it helps do their job as they should, although creativity can be built on top of the subject to help the understanding of learning students and developing their lifelong learning potential. Good, constructive creativity.
@Pantiesboo Stardadized tests would be a fine thing, provided there are standardized students. The problem is that students are expected to measure up to a standard rather than helped to find their true abilities. For those who cannot the best they can hope for is a diagnosis of some description. Dyslexia, ADHD, etc. Children are not standard units. They are unique and should be treated as such...
@Pantiesboo The problem is that we've sacrificed quality of learning for ease of quantifying...it's a disaster...and I've been a teacher for 2 decades. Standardized testing has very limited use in terms of reflecting learning and skill acquisition. They don't help us "do [our] jobs as [we] should"--quite the opposite in many instances. The tests do not give us much usable information about learning beyond knowledge or comprehension; they're helpful primarily for administrative purposes.
I was moved by his thoughts, it is true that creativity killed by our school. I think our creativity starts at kindergarden. If we have the right curriculum or activity we will discover what our talent. And his right about its not to late for anybody to be happy on what your doing. Start to reinvent....
i wish our school system didnt treat social science like foods class. I felt completely insulted by the soc/psych/anthro courses available at both of the high schools i went to. the course designers seemed to take on a position that we (the stupid kids) are utterly incapable of the complexities of these disciplines. both grades 11 and 12 courses were virtually identical and painfully insubstantial. a slap in the face for anyone interested in a career in these fields.
they should teach kids things like electromotive mechanics (eg electric bicycles etc) lots of learning such as maths, physics and electronics here. or game programming kids love this kind of stuff because it relates to something they can use to enhance their lives now (like modifying their bike to become electric means quicker paperounds and more pocket money!!!) and be useful skill in the future.
Wow - I have a degree in neurosci but never thought of balance as a "sense" - it definitely fits the bill though! My mind is blown! O_O Can't believe I missed thinking about it like that! I guess I've always clumped it in with acoustical sense.
@jazcash depend what part of England your from like 'grass' and 'bath' etc but I guess one should pronounce it like they do if they are from Warick (town).
Dance should be daily, so too meditation, yoga, music and poetry. The read word, oratory, teamwork and projects. Art, creativity, interactive design and flipping classes to video and make class rooms discussion and projects zones and media labs. Volunteer for wikipedia, flickr or photographic, video or 3D drawing and story telling. Bring on the education revolution!
@rODIUMuk In his other talks he did. I think it went along the lines of "creativity is the manifestation of ideas that have value", or something along those lines. For more on it, check out his talks on "Do Schools Kill Creativity" and "Changing Education Paradigms"
@liv4themoments@rODIUMuk Actually, he says that "creativity is the process of having original ideas that have value." He also calls it "applied imagination" in another instance.
He gives a more thorough explanation in this video (copy and paste this into the YouTube search box): "Sir Ken Robinson: Collaboration in the 21st Century"
For Americans: "But what shocks is that we should so eagerly have adopted one of the very worst aspects of Prussian culture: an educational system deliberately designed to produce mediocre intellects, to hamstring the inner life, to deny students appreciable leadership skills, and to ensure docile and incomplete citizens in order to render the populace "manageable." John Taylor Gatto
See Sir Ken Live in Norwich UK on The 18th of November. I'm lucky I live in Norwich I'll be there go to his web site 'around the world' tab or search specialist education.
*) "British comes from an Hebrew word, berith. A 'berith' is a contract in the old Hebrew language, and 'ish' is a man or men. Therefore berith-ish becomes british – man of the contract."
On the other hand there's an author named Jon Beasley-Murray that I don't know at all yet (posthegemony.blogspot) who wrote on March 6, 2010:
"I have to say I find Robinson absolutely nauseating."
(a comment from "the terry project" blog, youtuber: terryproject)
This capacity to be stimulated and enlightened by looking beyond yourself is distinctive to human beings. So I think, it's the most powerful capacity that we have. [...] It's this capacity that will get us through it or not and we can't afford to squander it."
The British *) knight sounds to me a bit like Terence McKenna here who once said, "the future is mental, figure it out. If the mind does not loom large in the future history of this species then what the hell future is it going to be?
on hailing creativity as the highest level of learning and intelligence:
"Well, you know, I think that imagination, on which depends all of this, is the most distinctive feature of human intelligence. It's what sets us apart from anything else on the planet. Very few other things set us apart from all the other things on the planet, but this ability is distinctive. And look at the extraordinary achievements that human culture has brought about. [...]
The finger-child-dog argument is flawed. You cannot expect a dog to understand the symbolism employed by human beings. It is a completely biased comparison. It is like speaking English to a Frenchman and concluding that the French are less intelligent than the English because they don't understand what an English child does.
Please, someone get all of the nations' governments, stick them in a room, and let this guy entrance them with his words of wisdom. This man has made me see, that, no matter result I get in my HSC, it's not an true estimation of my intelligence. It's an estimation of my memory capabilities, not my creativity levels. Our children need to be encouraged in their interests, not conformed into the same "model". Variety is the key and the spice to life. And that's what would make this world better.
The interviewer talks too much. For the love of Noam, keep the questions short and punchy. Let Ken speak more... it's HIS expertise people want to hear.
I was luckly enough to meet Sir Ken a few years ago and i must say after his 15 minute speech was life changing and after he offered people to speak to him one to one and i jumped at tha chance. He told me to follow my passion and be creative and original and i have done that, and now im going to
university to study my passion of Music Production. This man could completly change our education system for the better, its so good to have people like him who understand what children need.
Some adults turn into dogs as they grow old then ;-) sorry that just popped into my head at the begining. But seriously I totaly agree with Sir Ken here.
we have a drama dept, a music dept, and sports at school including academic classes with decent teachers, but still I wish we could learn stuff like it actually mattered, not like we're just to be taught like blockheads. A lot of kids would just like to do something different for a change. Why are we on a set-up treadmill toward college in a rush? Help us Ken and do something about the IB standard.
@hannaremnant The IB? Just started that....it's painful, but it depends on how oyu approach it; and it IS meant to be very demanding, by the end of it you have a huge foundation for everything.
@TonyKaku Yeah, he's awesome! He has totally transformed my life from being a guy studying science with nothing else as an option. And now I'm thrilled about life! I look into ideas on videos like this, I think about politics during nights. Nothing has ever given me so much energy, I'm superconvinced that schools need to change, NOW! Don't you agree!? =)
