Why don't cyclocross bikes have flat bars? Surly that would be more practical? I thought drop bars were for an aerodynamic riding position and comfort on long rides? Wouldn't a rigid frame, large wheeled flat barred bike be easier to handle, whilst maintaining responsiveness and speed?

This sport sucks where I'm at. Bunch of snobby roadies. Im the only mtb guy and am screwed. The junior class Im with rotates between Cat 4 and junior. When they go Cat 4 they win the whole damn thing. I dont stand a chance .

You can run fairly well in shoes that have shimano spd's. I haven't done cyclocross but they could be using those. Flexibility of the shoe would also make a difference one way or the other.

Almost all the pros would use MTB shoes. They are perfect for 'cross as they allow for a good combination of traction while running, stiffness, durability and reliabilty, power transfer while in the pedals and comfort

@zestCC The best ones out there are Crank Brother's "Egg Beaters." Real nice open design, so the mud is never a problem. Easiest to get in and out of too. Best choice for cross. Hope that helped!
