However, given the muddled nature of Loughner's thinking and of his personal rage, the state will no doubt point to this as "proof" of mental illness, and of the defendent's incompetence to stand trial. In this way, society will be furnished its explanation of an "irrational" act. However, to paraphrase C.K. Chesterton, "sanity is the one thing a madman maintains to the very end."
