The only fear I have in owning a Presa is getting a full blooded one. i have no fear in it's ability or it's power to stop most things including vicious dogs but the only fear is realy finding a pure bred one. I realy want to own one but finding one that is pure is hard it makes me want to change my mind and go with my second favorite dog a cane corso.

@Taud Are you talking about the dogs in the video here? No, they were presas. All of which were confirmed by judges in the Canary Islands. I don't think any of the dogs in this video are alive today. This was from 1999 I believe. Papers will prevent what you are talking about and the fact that if you look at a bullmastiff you can easily see the difference. Duna, the fawn female produced some of the best working presas ever.
@primolilla No, im saying the bullmastiffs generally look different depending on which country you are in, in north america they have a snout a lot like a presa or a fila, they also crop the ears occasionally, papers can be faked a number of ways now with current technologies some look more english bulldog if theyre from the UK,i have friends here that easily paper their pits off as other breeds cuz pits are illegal, so whats to stop someone from selling a 300$ bullmastiff as a 1500$ presa?
@Taud I hear ya. I thought you were saying these dogs looked like B/M. I agree you can fake papers, but one thing you can't really fake is the breed standards. The best way to avoid what you are saying is to research the breeder, do your own homework and go see and test the breeding pair before you get a pup. That said you can and will get a real presa that looks like a throwback now and then. You bring up good points. Research is the key. lots of crap breeders looking for $ out there.
@primolilla Yea for sure im not saying these dogs are in fact bullmastiffs, i was just saying they could easily be mistaken for them, because they can look very similar, given the face and height, color yeah thats what im doing right now, im moving out on my own next year and i need guard dogs so im really wondering if ive in fact seen mixes being advertised as presa or fila cuz theres nothing to stop ppl from doing so, who knows i might get a bully mix anyways
@Taud Good Luck. If you are in the UK, I know Red Star has shipped a few dogs over from the US. They have a fair amount of training info on their web page and some videos here. There are some other kennels too.
I would recomend u get pofessional training for your dog presas have a great potencial to become aggressive if not properly handeled and trained as puppies. He's still young so do it now these dogs need to have a job and a lot of attention with someone who knows how to handle them so go research and don't let your little kids play with him by themselves they can have a strong preying instinct
i got him about 2 hrs ago from a family that couldnt keep him no more, he is a big fucking dog and very energetic (almost hyper).
im not sure of the best way to train this dog for us, we are the 3rd owners of this dog.
i have kids that are 2,4, and 6 and so far he has been good with them, i am kinda nervous since he is so big and i have read that they are aggressive and dominant...any suggestions?
@chemogrizzly I don't think that's the best idea to have them around kids that young, but I wouldn't know... I heard that they will never bite the family they grew up with.
You want to for sure get some training. It might cost a bit, but its worth it. The dog probably won't be outright aggressive, but keep an eye out when feeding him. Don't let him on the bed, and watch him close around other male dogs. Keep kids and dog separate unless you are there and doing something active like playing fetch. If you have problems check out Red star Kennels in WI. They are excellent trainers. Good luck, you should be OK if you stay in control and let the dog know U R boss.
@primolilla What is the bit with not letting the Presa Canario on the bed? Does this pertain to other pieces of furniture as well? I'm just curious, you sound learned and I'd like to understand the rationale behind.
@hork111 Generally speaking its not a great idea. We let our 1st one up as we thought it was cute and cozy, but one night we decided he was too big, it was hot, we didn't want dog hair on the bed and so on. When we tried to make him get off, he got defensive and growled. We knew how to deal with it because our trainers told what to do. The average presa owner may not. Having them up simply starts a territorial issue. Not all, but they feel its their place, and it can cause aggression problems.
@primolilla Yes, I see. I like Presas but upon reading I think they are a handful. And with a dog that size if something goes wrong it can end up horribly. Besides the Whipple case there was the woman in Florida. Her Presa starts growling at her and days later she's dead. Thanks for the info.
@hork111 Yes, no doubt if you do not do things correctly, as with any large breed, things can go wrong. That's the trouble with many good working breeds, EVERYBODY likes, and thinks they can own one. They are great IF you are prepared to do the right things, buy from a good breeder, invest in training, and follow through with it. we are on our second presa and the kids love him. If we have any questions we speak with our trainer/breeder immediately. The breed is good in general. Its up 2 owners

The Canarians wanted to resurrect the breed but the Spaniards weren't foolish enough to let them use precious Alanos. So the Canarians used mastiffs/fake bulldogs
instead of the real thing. Long story short, it was a failure. Not as disastrous as the Ca De Bou recreation process was (because the Bardino is still alive & kicking but the Ca De Bestiar still has a ways to go), but a failure nonetheless.

I don't really disagree that once extinct you can actually "re-create" the same dog of old, but again. This is what is NOW a presa canario. There are some very good dogs out there.
but these dogs AREN'T Presa Canarios. The original Canario was bred STRICTLY for fighting. nothing else. The Canarians had the Bardino for the guarding/cattle management. They used the prey driven nature of the Alano & the ferociousness of the Bardino to create the ultimate fighting dog, just as the Majorcans combined Ca De Bestiar with Alano Espanol to create Presa Majorcan. I dont doubt that these false specimens are good dogs. All dogs are "good dogs".

Well, good for you with your alano. I had a friend that imported one after visiting the islands. I found it to be rather lame for what we do and nowhere near what we have. I won't judge the whole breed by one dog. My Presa is titled in real legit working dog trials. I'll take a PSA 1 titled dog any day no matter the breed. Alanos would never do PSA work because aggressiveness towards humans (and other dogs for that matter) is an extremely undesirable trait in the breed. Spanish Bulldogs are bred to catch cattle & hunt large game in packs, nothing more. they are far too confident in themselves to view humans as a threat.
No pumas on the islands. They are used to protect cattle and farms yes, but there really aren't any large predators on the Canary Islands. Lots of lizards though LOL!

Pit Bulls do not have natural guard ability, are just fearless and courageous. Presa Canarios on the other hand, can get up to 3 times the weight of a Pit Bull; they have natural guard ability, their bite alone is more than 400 lbs of pressure, it COULD rip a Pit apart, except Presas are stabler in temperament than EVERY Pit I've seen. They don't have a bad reputation either.

Presa Canarios are in fact at LEAST 3 times larger than APBTs. I'm not a dog fighter, I don't watch them rip each other apart for fun and money so I'm not taking sides here. Learn what a pack leader is and be one. Puppies need discipline - they're like children. Set boundaries and stick to them. You can't have a dog with that raw power and ability and NOT have it obedient. I recommend you enroll in obedience classes immediately.

Be assertive. actions speak louder than words.Correct bad behaviour as soon as it occurs.Reward good bahaviour in same way. Correcting a puppy is simple,just grab gently but firmly on scruff of neck and scold. DO NOT wait till the dog is older.
Yeah but you don't want to be doing that scruff thing, or the belly roll when it is older if you haven't already asserted your dominance. You could be seriously bitten! Walking through hallways and doors first is a good one. Not letting him on the couch, eating before he does, petting him not when he asks but when you call him, etc make a big difference.

I have presa 8 month girl, and I have had her in training since I got her. Presa's are very goofy and powerful! If ur not experienced in training dogs with a dominant tempermant, I suggest findding a trainer that is, as if the dog is not trained at fully grown a presa can kill a grown man. So they need boundaries set for sure!

@hork111 Yes, no doubt if you do not do things correctly, as with any large breed, things can go wrong. That's the trouble with many good working breeds, EVERYBODY likes, and thinks they can own one. They are great IF you are prepared to do the right things, buy from a good breeder, invest in training, and follow through with it. we are on our second presa and the kids love him. If we have any questions we speak with our trainer/breeder immediately. The breed is good in general. Its up 2 owners

@chemogrizzly well what exactly is the problem with him ? all u stated was that he is big and hyper. being the third owner of that dog isn't a bonus..they say when a dog changes owners or is given away they become depressed, they get attached. this could lead to aggression or some other forms of behavior.im not a vet or any thing but i have a good backround with dogs. what is it exactly your having issues with?

actually, no, the recreation process was a complete failure.
And this video is 100% false. The Presa Canario was a cross between a Presa (Spanish Bulldog) & Bardino Majorero. There was no mastiff blood infused & the english bulldog hadn't even been created yet.
It also says that Presa Canario wasn't created to fight, which is a lie. It most certainly was.

Here's the deal, and I don't think you are totally out of line. But the fact is, THIS is what is now being called a presa canario. Like it or not it IS a breed and IS a good dog. I don't really disagree that once extinct you can actually "re-create" the same dog of old, but again. This is what is NOW a presa canario. There are some very good dogs out there.

but these dogs AREN'T Presa Canarios. The original Canario was bred STRICTLY for fighting. nothing else. The Canarians had the Bardino for the guarding/cattle management. They used the prey driven nature of the Alano & the ferociousness of the Bardino to create the ultimate fighting dog, just as the Majorcans combined Ca De Bestiar with Alano Espanol to create Presa Majorcan. I dont doubt that these false specimens are good dogs. All dogs are "good dogs".

Well, good for you with your alano. I had a friend that imported one after visiting the islands. I found it to be rather lame for what we do and nowhere near what we have. I won't judge the whole breed by one dog. My Presa is titled in real legit working dog trials. I'll take a PSA 1 titled dog any day no matter the breed. Dog fighting is illegal so its a non factor here. Congrats on your "real deal". Good luck.

The Spaniards won't deploy them to Majorca or the Canaries because they don't want to dirty up precious Alano blood with the mutt-blood of the "newly recreated" Presas Majorcan & Canario.

Alanos would never do PSA work because aggressiveness towards humans (and other dogs for that matter) is an extremely undesirable trait in the breed. Spanish Bulldogs are bred to catch cattle & hunt large game in packs, nothing more. they are far too confident in themselves to view humans as a threat.

presa CAN be agressive to wards other dogs, and suspicious of strangers. But that is just like with all dogs, you have to socialize them and do a lot of training. I really want one. Only thing is that dippshits use them for dogfights and give the dog, a bad reputation ? hmm sounds a little wrong right there ;) But no one want to sell me one, because im young and they think ill use it for dogfights or that i am in a drug thingy....

Pit Bulls do not have natural guard ability, are just fearless and courageous. Presa Canarios on the other hand, can get up to 3 times the weight of a Pit Bull; they have natural guard ability, their bite alone is more than 400 lbs of pressure, it COULD rip a Pit apart, except Presas are stabler in temperament than EVERY Pit I've seen. They don't have a bad reputation either.
Try a Fila Brasileiro if you like aggressive dogs, and if you're so tough

That's very true, but we're talking about Presas and Pit Bulls. The fact of the matter is Presa Canarios have natural guard and protection ability. That's all I said.. then this dogfighter guy comes in and tells me a Pit could rip a PC apart, which I don't honestly care about, since I don't fight dogs. I show and work, like they're supposed to be. And I agree about the licencing -- these dogs aren't for everyone, especially fighters.

Well you can't blame them. Pit bulls are manufactored like cheap generic cereal. They are cheap, gullible, and can be slaves to a bad owner - that's why they are the most popular dog to fight. That's what's sad about it... Pits are naturally want to please their owner and for that reason they are taken advantage of. Their courage and intelligence are too. Both breeds, Pits and Presas alike, are great companion dogs and just because of their courage and fierce look, are used for fighting, and as cash generators.

Learn what a pack leader is and be one. Puppies need discipline - they're like children. Set boundaries and stick to them. You can't have a dog with that raw power and ability and NOT have it obedient. I recommend you enroll in obedience classes immediately.

Firstly,Presacanarios are not for inexperienced dog owners.being in the wrong hands could lead to very destructive and dangerous behaviour.proper training begins at home. The presa requires a firm hand and above all,consistency.Establish urself and ur family as dominant. before u ask, this does NOT require any cruel treatment. Do not listen to people who tell you that striking a dominant dog will establish dominance over it.this will only lead to instability.

Be assertive. actions speak louder than words.Correct bad behaviour as soon as it occurs.Reward good bahaviour in same way. Correcting a puppy is simple,just grab gently but firmly on scruff of neck and scold. DO NOT wait till the dog is older.

Yeah but you don't want to be doing that scruff thing, or the belly roll when it is older if you haven't already asserted your dominance. You could be seriously bitten! Walking through hallways and doors first is a good one. Not letting him on the couch, eating before he does, petting him not when he asks but when you call him, etc make a big difference.

I have presa 8 month girl, and I have had her in training since I got her. Presa's are very goofy and powerful! If ur not experienced in training dogs with a dominant tempermant, I suggest findding a trainer that is, as if the dog is not trained at fully grown a presa can kill a grown man. So they need boundaries set for sure!
