I look at this and see one of the reasons that Whammy! wasn't as good as this: a lot of the best second rounds in PYL came from tons of whammies in the first round. The rule change in the remake took away that possibility.

Not so much an error. She'd rather have Chris get that final whammy and level the totals all three ways, as opposed to hitting a whammy herself, which not only gives her three whammies, but also gives Chris the advantage.
