This is one of the first tunes I learned how to play. You start out sitting straight with the guitar on your knee and by the time your finished, you're laying your ear on the wood. Nobody ever rolled out hypnotic rhythms like the Grateful Dead, then or since. Songs like this and Stella Blue had a spectral quality about them that, on a good night, was the absolute horizon of American mysticism. It was participating in someone else's long gone history. You can smell the smoke, whiskey, & sawdust.
Now this was a great time to be on the road chasing these cat"s around the country. There was no limit to the energy that came off the stage each night, although i did like the small theatre"s more, plus you could lose 10 pounds at each show from sweating. I gotta tell ya i miss this stuff.Alot.
gimme the 66'-71' period for ultimate ya-ya's.....esp 66' , some of those tones out of the ol' red just sting and melt all at the same time.....pig was at his best.....bear was on board. oh if only i could time travel.......
beautiful..play it for em slow n pretty jerry! this song was meant to be slowed down and pained, whether or not the killers were running strong. fuckin perfect..
It was truly a priveledge to experiance Jerry Garcia whenever and whereever that occured...I am better for and blessed by the experiance...He was truly a beautiful human being whom I will miss the rest of my life...
I was born three months after this performance and got into the Dead seventeen years after that. I love hearing them. There's more depth there than I'll ever know.
@pac401 Too critical meng,, you've got to appreciate the mistakes and differences that comes with every live performance. It's a direct reflection of the musician's state of mind during the set. I'm guessing this was right after a hefty smoke break : )
But yeah,, definitely a bit slow for my tastes too. Haha.
@alexbald12 I think you are missing the concept here. You only get 1 choice. Yeah, I would miss loads of other stuff. Pink Floyd and the Doors included. But, slow or not, this is one of the best songs Ever performed, by one of the Best bands to Ever grace Gods green earth. And, I Mean that from the bottom of my soul.
Nobody ever feels exactly the same way everyday...why should they be any different...so you would rather hear the same song played the same way everytime..goes against the whole concept...dont ya think...
counter culture is consumer culture if you wanna be independant shop at second hand stores make your own propadanda start a fn revolution i got your back
I really like this performance. It's just a bit too slow, but I love how the bass really sticks out. I saw the Rhythm Devils about a month back and their encore sounded so much like Loser that I didn't realize it was different until the lyrics... Lol. One of my favorite songs of all time. Thanks for the upload!
God. They were so young, back then. They play so slow, like life lasts forever, or something. Miss them so bad. I guess I'll miss them the rest of my life.((. If I had one Desert Island disc, it would be Dead Set. Anyone who says different can join me in hell. Actually, you can't you little pricks. Hell is for Heroes.
My very first show!!! 34 years ago today. I was into The Dead for three years before this, so I was really pumped for this, my first. Went on to see 40 more over the years. Great memories...
the future is the youth. we must give away what we got for so many years. im 30 . i saw jerry at his best.. his last preformance at shoreline . unbroken chain. amazing, the youth are the unbroken chain. looking for familiar faces in an empty window pain,. One love.. Anthony Isaac.. keep the movement moving. we revolt with songs of freedom and love.. Jah
@MrJaimeDean im 18 and never got too see them so you still beat me but if you're thirty you never saw jerry at his best. you weren't born yet when he was at his best.
aw man, that's hard to say, those are some great songs too. i just love the minor chords in this one and that psychedelic western feel they pull off so well.
Jerry was truly the king of the slow ballad; the tone, inflection, emotion and timing of his vocals circa 1976 are under-rated; he has stood the test of time. Phil's unique appoach to the base is a more evident in these laid back, uncluttered songs; tremendous. This was an exciting timeframe- the band was still fresh and evolving- I believe started to get stale after '82ish. Each song has a period where the peaked; the vast majority peaked between 76 and 81, with moments of magic after that....
I am 54 ( from Palo Alto) have seen many shows and you are right on! I stopped going to shows around 87 ( only Garcia shows) and I had access. Right on Brother.
I was at this show,we lived in Elizabeth, NJ at the time. Roosevelt was the best, lots 'o Sunshine. If you were there in the70's till Jersey City closed it down YOU are a truely lucky Dead Head.Peace Out...G )0(
another not so well known fact is Bird song was written for Janis Joplin.. it was written right after she died.. but was off any of their live set lists for years before they decided to perform again.
wow I did not know that- thanks! love Janis- adds new meaning to the song. I was at the Greek in 2001 berkeley when Phil changed the words at the end and sang "like a bird within HIM sang" very cool moment
I was there, I didn't know about the herion at the time, I just thought they played too many slow songs, including some that they had previously played uptempo that REALLY wanted to stay uptempo. This song is slow, but here it's too slow. After the dirge-like version of "Cold Rain & Snow" at Englishtown a year later, I thought "these guys have nothing left to show me". Except for "Touch of Gray", I got that one right.
man, I am 25 I saw THE DEAD a couple times a few years back.. I am in IRELAND now and don't get to too many shows so much anymore , it was cool. I do digg this slow shit a lot!! I won't dare diss or step to it. I have no authority, no matter how many bootlegs i listen too but after recently listening to the festival Express soundtrack and seeing the footage I agree completely that some tracks are so sweet with a little more beat, like friend of the devil it kinda shame it lost its beat so early
@deadheadable Your kidding right? How can BK keep time w/ Mickey cluttering the sound? Mickey wasn't needed in the band, Jerry simply could'nt fire anyone, The dead were at there best when they were a 5 peice band.
dpavelko is also agree with about Bill Kreutzman. He was the most ignored member of the band in the eyes of most Deadheads. But he was a solid and dependable member of the band, beside being an awesome drummer. Kreutzman would shoulder the responsibility of drumming all alone during the early 1970's, when Mickey Hart left the band in shame. Hart's father had been a member of the GD management and had taken off with a good chuck of change that belonged to the band.
This was my first Dead show. Whoa! I can't believe it. I don't remember this song, but, shoot, I don't remember much of it anyway lol. Damn thank goodness for You-Tube!
jeffj257 is correct about the heroin. From the book Dark Star, there are multiple people who go on record as saying that begining in 1975, Jerry began smoking heroin daily. He choose to a form of heroin that is smokeable. He would battle his addiction to heroin for the remaining twenty years of his life. Finally dying of heart failure in 1995.
Also, it describes the despair of a man who knows he'll lose his woman, unless he comes up pretty soon with some solid cold cash. Gambling is probably the fastest way to get it, especially out in the 'country'.
hes the one any only jerry garcia the one and only grateful dead blows my mind everytime. i guess they're not here anymore in one way, not the other. unfortunately, most people now and im 24 dont have any appreciation for timeless eternal masterpeices created through the divine and played out by the dead. its higher than just a band playing music. its the divine everliving spirit communicating through him, no doubt genius
hey i agree with you on that one brother. im seventeen now and i am amazed by this band. i only wish that more of the youth were aware of the power and life in this music. it is really more than just music. it has a soul. you can just feel it.
@skidoome69 Right on little brother. You nailed it. This music has soul that touches your mind and your body then transforms into your every day life and way of thinking. I began listening to the Dead when I was 15 when Jerry passed and now I am familiarizing my son with their music.
@skidoome69 & singing... Lots of wonderful tribute bands all over the world doing wonderful work keeping the spirit alive. Sure, we miss Jerry, who in their right mind wouldn't. But ya know what? We keep him alive by passing the torch to folk like you two. I am GRATEFUL for your appreciation of this gift. Bands to look for: Max Creek Ekoostik Hookah Furthur theCAUSE Groove Train Riders Double Dose (Reading PA) Good Luvin Jam Band Donna the Buffalo Donna and the Tricksters so many more
I feel your pain too, I got turned on in '79 (life changing) and regret missing the 15 years of this that I did miss. But thank GOD for Youtube and folk like ethandeitrich1 for keeping the love light burning!
You know by some reason I really like the lyrics for this song, maybe not all of them together but the individual parts just strike me. For example everytime he states;
'Well I know a little somethign you won't ever know' I think of him talking about which cards he holds in his hand. Its kind of sad that something so minor is used with such strong words (you won't ever know)
Some of the other parts that I enoy are; 'Well I got no chance of loosing...this time' and 'Don't you touch hard liquor just a cup of cold coffe, got to get up in the morning and go' The song seems to capture the feel of a person who is addicted to gambling and thinks he is good at it
hey how about you go kill yourself, just because you dont like the dead doesnt mean you should go around talkin shit. obviously if millions of people loved him he was doing something right!! :)
agreed man, but i can say that i love all dead because i am a deadhead and i just have been like in a trance from the first time i ever listened to them, and i just cant stop.
One of the best songs jerry did.... RIP Missed but neaver for gotten....

@skidoome69 Right on little brother. You nailed it. This music has soul that touches your mind and your body then transforms into your every day life and way of thinking. I began listening to the Dead when I was 15 when Jerry passed and now I am familiarizing my son with their music.

I feel your pain too, I got turned on in '79 (life changing) and regret missing the 15 years of this that I did miss. But thank GOD for Youtube and folk like ethandeitrich1 for keeping the love light burning!

You know by some reason I really like the lyrics for this song, maybe not all of them together but the individual parts just strike me. For example everytime he states;
'Well I know a little somethign you won't ever know' I think of him talking about which cards he holds in his hand. Its kind of sad that something so minor is used with such strong words (you won't ever know)
.

Some of the other parts that I enoy are; 'Well I got no chance of loosing...this time' and 'Don't you touch hard liquor just a cup of cold coffe, got to get up in the morning and go' The song seems to capture the feel of a person who is addicted to gambling and thinks he is good at it

Fantastic guitar solo Garcia performes here, the slow underplayed buil-up climax - and, as usual great style and no show-off.

Guys, please help. I'm searching for a song that I've heard on an old MTV surf video,
Sounds more like Santanish ...it has the same intro as this one, this bass and the guitar notes at the begining,
I think is someone covering the Loser or...stoling the tunes.
The thing is that the one I´m searching has an electric really good Santana's kind of guitar sound.
any ideas ? it has to be a good guitarist..kind of Eddie Hazel or early Santana .

Cracker covers Loser, MTV would play Cracker, maybe, good luck

My favorite Dead is '72-'74 (with one drummer, Billy rocks).
Then after that I like '76-'78, and this clip is an excellent example. They just played so well and were still creating AWESOME new music.
Just my opinion, I love all dead, though, you I know I do... : )
sruckoldt 3 years ago
agreed man, but i can say that i love all dead because i am a deadhead and i just have been like in a trance from the first time i ever listened to them, and i just cant stop.
brianm1314 3 years ago
Dude, it's a total addiction!!! I like the way you call it a trance, cause it is. The music literally gets me high when I listen to it.
