  • I missed them at City Island in Daytona Beach, FL. I remember well the first few lines in the newspaper..."the sweet strains of "South City Midnight Lady" wafted over the Halifax..." I'm still regretting that I missed it...

  • Can there possibly be two men in rock who have conducted themselves over the years with more ''class'' than Patrick Simmons and Tom Johnston? What a joy to watch these gentlemen at work.No ego,no agenda other than creating great music.Bravo

  • Hey, when did they get old? Great song early on, still great today! thanks for sharing!

  • The entire song is a joy to the ears, but the build up at the very end takes it to another level.

  • South City Midnight Lady c'est toi cherie

    I'm much obliged indeed

you sure have saved this man

whose soul was in need xx

  • This song stands up to Long Train Runnin' :)

  • The music just flows from these guys....

  • retiring soon from the fire dept, so Dobbies, every need a a real good drummer or fill in, I'll be available. tim andrew, naugatuck, ct

  • Check out on youTube ECHOES LOVE by Jennifer Rush. . Powerfull song!

  • Doobs even

  • I love the Doobs when they're rocking, but like zeus, I feel they come into their own on the sensitive stuff. South City is a classic. Listen to The Music now has legendary status. Black Water blows me away. Personally, I love the way they capture everything Doobie in the Captain and Me. Yay the Dobs

  • That look of relief when he realised he'd survived a great song. "Phew" he whispered into the air. Brilliant song, exceptonal band

  • South city, CA? South San Fran? I've always wondered?

  • Such a simple song they turned into a masterpiece. One of the few bands that sound better live. Love 'em.

  • WOW!! Who would a thunk they would sound so great LIVE!! Now THAT is the true measure of a band.

  • Reminds me of better days.

  • @HighSpeedNoDrag AMEN BROTHER, AMEN!

  • Best.

  • love this video.

  • Very, very nice taste with the steel guitar and horn. Pat, great voice, and my complament to the rest of the band. Retiring soon from the fire dept. Looking to hit the road playin drums. Nothin like it! tim andrew, naugatuck, ct

I have a video of me driving my Indian with that song.

  • Very, very nice taste with the steel guitar and horn. Pat, great voice, and my complament to the rest of the band. Retiring soon from the fire dept. Looking to hit the road playin drums. Nothin like it! tim andrew, naugatuck, ct

  • What an awesome transition at 3:10

  • Looks like a saprano sax to me... Saw these guys in Edmonton, Alberta in July. Hadn't seen them since '73. The 5-part harmonies and the overall acoustics in the theatre on the U of A campus were near perfect. The band can still rock with the best, and the new material was as good as anything they've done.

  • Can someone please tell me what instrument that righteous black dude's rockin at 2:39

  • great band!

  • This song gives me really good good good sensation!

  • I have the DVD, CD, and have seen them 4 times since '75......still, here I sit watching them on You Tube. The best musicians EVER!

  • My favorite Doobie song since I was 15.

  • beautiful, complimented each other well with this song, lyrics fantastic, what more can i say, I WANT MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lets hope theys guys keep up the good work,

  • John McFee was also with Clover before they became Huey Lewis and the News. What talent! I also include the rest of the Doobies with that comment.

  • @jimmyjam4371 They were ahead of their time, weren't they?

  • @naiknaid no, that was the exact time for that music.nobody does songs like this now.just cause its still a great song doesnt mean they were ahead of their time,it was the perfect time, i lived through those times and we all thought they were great but nobody was saying,"gosh, this is so unlike anything else out there"

  • Thank you for the post on this! One of my fav all-time songs with excellent pedal steel work by John McFee. Rock on Pat Simmons!

  • Bring me back to this era!

  • Thanks so much for posting. Love this! A wonderful performance of a beautiful song.

  • Thanks to Tom Johnston and Michael McDonald for 35 years of really great musical compositions, old guys know how to rock, no doubt.

  • what woman wouldnt LOVE this song?

  • @MasterAceman123456 Absolutely Absolutely!

  • This is without a doubt the best version of this song that I have ever heard, and I've heard them all. The quality of the sound, the camerawork and the pure musical genious is absolutely perfect. I have sent this to several friends and all were duly impressed. It just doesn't get any better. People can say what they want but Pat is the driving force in this band and is accompanied by the best in the business

  • @brecklaw1215 Tem També a Versão de 82 Co Michael Mcdonald nos baking vocals é bem legal também dá outra harmonia..

  • @demandrady1 en ingles, por favor.

  • @demandrady1 It also has a version 82 with Michael McDonald on vocals is pretty cool baking also gives another harmony ..

  • @brecklaw1215 agree with you! Brecklaw .. Excellent!! Wonderful interpretation of Pat. not to mention the guitar solo Tommy Jonhnston!!!!!!!!!

  • Best concert i ever went to was Doobies here in Atlanta in the 70s.

  • this is the real DOOBIE BROTHERS! saw them in '73 and they were rocking!

  • Some of the best music you wil ever hear. Makes me sad that todays music is so lacking in true artistry. These guys are among the very best.

  • This is one of the best songs i've ever heard. My big brothers had this album in the late 60's and I loved it ever since.

  • @brecklaw1215 Comcordo plenamente com Voce..abraços...

  • Saw the doobies back in about 1978? Great

  • If there's a more beautiful song than this, I've yet to hear it.

  • I am a huge Doobie Brothers fan and this song is one of my all time favorites. Granted, the rocking songs are great and got the lion's share of air play (as well as the Michael Mac Donald era songs) but the Patrick Simmon's songs were gems. As was stated by others this was the true Doobie Brothers to me with Patrick and Tom on lead vocals.

  • @zeusdvm Missed Tiran Porter on Bass guitar, but also skarlark 'wonderful ..... john while Cowen is not much of a guy .... Doobies big hug to all ....

  • @demandrady1 I know. It just has never been the same for me with them since Tiran Porter left them.

  • @zeusdvm I TOTALLY agree.

  • Heard this on 100.3FM 'The Sound' in Los Angeles last night and have been singing it my mind all day...one of my favorite Doobie tunes! Enjoy this great live version!

  • Great Doobie Brothers song! This is what I think is the true Doobie Brothers sound.

  • @Starliner57 Com Certeza essa é a Raiz dos Doobies...abraços

  • ドゥービー!1996年、嬉しい曲演ってくれましたね!~郷愁のスティールギターと懐かしいメロディー"SOUTH CITY MIDNIGHT LADY"~アレンジもイイ!

  • whish I was there

  • Everyone talks about Tom Johnston and Michael McDonald, but who is the constant presence and killer singer, songwriter and guitarist but Pat Simmons. As long as he’s in the band they are the Doobies as far as I’m concerned. I saw them as the middle act after STONEGROUND and before HOT TUNA. They played about 40 minutes then did one of the longest encores I’ve ever seen by a band. “Listen to the Music” was a big hit but they played most of the then yet-to-be-released CAPT & ME album. Smokin'!!!

  • These guys have nothing on Justin Bieber, except for the fact they are insanely talented. If this young generation doesn't stop listening to the tripe they listen too, then they will never know what great music is. Kids, drop the J.B.s, Mileys, GaGas, etc. Start listening to Charice, the only truly great talent out there for the teen and twenty-somethings (and for all of us). I'm 52 and love her to death.

  • I'd like to see any of the bands of today exhibit the range of instrumental talent demonstrate here.

  • You sure have saved this man who sould was in need!!!

  • Anybody know if the studio version of this song is on YT?

  • Thank you so much for posting this video. my hats off to the members of the entire group of the Doobie Brothers , roadies, players, laborers and the whole damned nine yards. YOU....made American Rock and roll what it is today. KEEP THE FAITH!!!

  • This was recorded at a time when music was music ! These guys are great and the album this was recorded on is my favorite.

  • Three minutes and forty-seven seconds of audio foreplay, then wham!! Was it good for you? Oh yeah..........

  • First off, I want to know WHERE these 4 or 5 people are that DISLIKE this song and other great songs like this. Maybe they accidentally push the "Thumbs Down" button or it's a computer error - but this is another great Doobie Brother's song. Exceptionally great pedal steel too. Secondly, Michael McDonald basically got his start with the Doobie's. Who knows how long it have taken otherwise for him to get noticed. He is incredibly talented too.

  • Mcfee is very talented

They are no doubt one of the best groups of ll time.

  • Michael Mc Donald definitely had no business being in the Doobs. He did way better with Steely Dan.

  • Wow! That dude played some great Pedal Steel guitar! It's really hard to play! I have tried!

  • Hands Down.....One of the GREATEST Songs ever ! Supreme Sound, and mixing on the Studio Version !

  • Being a drummer love the Dobbies. They rock.. I wore their albums out in 1973-1977 Love Dark Eyed Cajon Woman and this song are my favorites. Got to see them front row 1976 Ithica NY and later in CA Los Gatos 1997. They still rock and Rule!

  • I love this song, and lyrics superb

  • This is Great, Guys! Awesome!

  • Mother's Day 2011 - can't wait to see you in Edmonton, Canada, in July - welcome one and all from Saskatchewan, Canada!!! Here's to a step back in time and a giant leap into the future...keep goin'!!! Your music is timeless and transcends the boundaries of the generations...take it from me and my four "enthusiastic" listener juniors. Bon Appetit to the musical spirit!!!

  • I agree with Msdistarr. A group of wonderful musicians never to be forgotten.

  • Not only is this song amazing but the gentlemen are amazing musicians. There are so many things going on in the backround (musically), that I had never noticed before. This is by far, up there on the top of the list as one of their best songs.

  • My favorite DB tune..alot of great memories... Corpus Christi circa 89...Daisy blooming...yeah she was.....

  • About 20 of my friends threw me a surprise birthday party on my 16th birthday. That would have been 1978. Since there was lots of snow on the ground we all went out sledding after the party. Then after sledding and after everyone was gone home I remember turning on the record player and for some reason listening to this song over and over again.

Good friends. Good times. Good music.

  • @mreaganismyhero My brother had the album back in the '70's. I used to play this song over and over again, too. Recently bought the CD I found in the $5 bin . . . way undervalued! Oh, the memories!

  • Finally found the correct tab to this song. It was a bitch to play until I found out the guitar was tuned to partial open G except for the first string.

  • @golferdude843 Hey man you play golf as well as an appreciation of the Doobies?? What a star and than you XXX

  • what can i say?....great song!!wow my 18 years old...best american band

  • @zigfriedzag Hello young man I am 45 but music goes in cycles so dont slag off us old farts we were young once like you. Some of us never grow up kid!! I will always be young in my heart, never an old fart. Played lead guitar in bands for 20 years, still have all of my gear. Got my 1974 Marshall amp refurbed like new by a lad who worked for Marshall. Kicks ass now !!! Just like Thin Lizzy on the Jailbreak Album in 74 ha !

  • Absolutely LOVE this song....but then, I love all their songs...brings back a lot of '70's memories.....carefree, fun-loving, partying days

  • Simply divine music, 'oh is that to harsh'. The energy and talent is incredible. The climax at 3:13 min. is classic rock and the steel guitar is a spot on addition, great flow, the greatest music ever !!

  • Simply divine music, 'oh is that to harsh'. The energy and talent is incredible.

  • Michael macDonald was a part of the Doobies. It was meant to be,he just let that silly hollywood thing go to his head.He gave up a great band to prance around with the hoity-toity holier than thou gang of hollywood air-heads.He's probably telling someone right now who designed his clothes.lol I think he wanted to be Kenny Rogers. Some ppl just get lost. Man,this is a beautiful song & the guy singing it is FINE!! What's his name & does he still like groupies?I wouldnt let him outta the bdrm! Yum!

  • @SmokinMo11 Mike Mac was brought in on the recommendation of "Skunk" when Tom became ill in 74. It was not documented - did Tom have a drug problem or another ilness. Anyway when Tom came back the balance had gone and "Taking it to the Streets" total departure. I liked Stampede and the journey into Country and Western experimentation. But the Jazz pop of that next album was a step too far for me. Please understand I love Mike Mac's work but the Doobies died as a band after Stampede

  • As I recall, Pat Simmons was the valedictorian of his class at Leigh High School in San Jose. He was in a couple of my classes, good at track, and a mellow good guy. So, who said good guys finish last? Great song, great singing, great band! Forty-five years ago, who knew?

  • i love this song

  • Its amazing what rock and roll sounds like when you have musicians with this much talent

  • I am so happy The Doobie Brothers are all back to their original band members. They are amazing! Keep it Up! Love y'all.

  • Doobie's were awesome without Michael, awesome with Michael, PLAIN AND SIMPLE!!! But I will say I lean more toward the pre-Michael Days!!! In PEACE and LOVE!!! Sonny Did I just put my foot in my mouth? NO!!!

  • Love the steel guitar.

  • One of the greatest songs ever

  • Doobies 4ever!

  • Hey, when did Ivan Reitman the film director become a keyboard player for the Doobie Brothers?

  • Agree with menterj - Doobies up to Michael MacDonald were amazing

  • This was the first band i ever seen live, and was one of the best I ever seen!

  • Many today are crying for music like this.....someone step forward !

  • Pat would have his coffee every mourning just down from the Catalyst in Santa Cruz .. just sittin' on a bench by himself .. he was so nice to me I felt like I was 3 years old ..

  • Great band then, great band now.

  • Tom your a fox too..

  • What an unbelievable beautiful song, they don't get much better than this

  • I am in love with pat.. what a cutie..

  • True that they produced some good stuff with MM but who knows what they would have done without him. He is a great solo artist but I personally just did not care for the most of the stuff they did when he was in the group.

  • @menterj Michael MacDonald is a brilliant musician but he should never been part of the Doobie Brothers. I love "What a Fool Believes" with all of my heart but it is not the Doobies - it is Mike's backing band.

The Doobies are Tom and Pat up to "Stampede" end of story.

    Take care man :)

  • @steveevh1 I never heard that before, but I can't agree more.

  • @steveevh1 Well my friend, I'm not sure you can put an "end" to any part of this great band's story. First there were Tom, Pat, Jeff, Tyran and the other boys, whose great sound finally got recognized when they softened-up their initial biker image. Tom got sick and almost died so he bowed out; enter Michael, who I think added a lot of soul and maybe a little bit of blues, but then again the Doobies are arguably a rock-and-roll band who wrote the book on vocal harmony. They will not soon end.

  • @steveevh1

End of one story, beginning of another:

On this song, it's Pedal Steel and the Bass Guitar, especially during the chorus, that make this song shine... for me.

It's all good... and even at its "worst", it's orders of magnitude better than most of what is being passed off these days as 'music'....

  • @steveevh1 I've always thought so too. Stampede is my favorite Doobie record. Music Man favorite song,

  • @steveevh1 -- AGREED!!

  • @steveevh1 All doobie albums up to '81 are brilliant but "Taking it to the streets" is my favourite. It's so soulfull. The way these songs are put together is just unique. On of the few albums i can play overand over again.

  • @steveevh1 que nada M Mcdonald é a cara dos doobies, só que em outra fase, porque como tal o restante do grupo tem excelentes musicos. tanto que que sem o Mcdonald os Dobbie não perdeu sua caracteristicas.. I love Doobies..

  • @steveevh1 The Doobie Brothers never died after 1975. They just evolved. Sure there was big backlash of fans when Michael came and turned the Doobie Brothers into more Jazz and Soul group. But they gain millions of brand new fans from 1976 to 1980 who didn't like any of their 1971 to 1975 stuff. The Doobie Brothers were still putting out #1 hits on the top 5 billboard after 1975

  • @menterj You just have to listen to this beautiful song. I have been a semi pro acomplished guitar player for 25 years, I have coverered Van Halen, Springsteen Clapton and Hendrix etc and there are no songs today which have been written better than this. That is why all of the current crop of wannabees have to go back and do classic covers man!!

  • BTW Mike Mc Donald took them in a direction that some liked but not me. Patrick and Tom are the dual kings of the Doobies!

  • @menterj We should not blame Mike Mac he is brilliant at what he does but the Doobies ended up being his backing band. The original album was ok, Toulouse Street was great, The Captain and Me was truly great, Vices and Habits was "Awsome" and Stampede was as good. How good could the Doobie Brothers have been if Tom had not fell ill? Tom and Pat forever!!!!!!!

  • @menterj I totally agree. I'm glad they went back to the "old" roots. Much, much better music to me.

  • Been a Doobie fan since I was a teenager and along with Steely Dan, they were the icons of Rock. I am glad they are still putting it down!

  • Let us all get one thing straight - Michael MacDonald is a brilliant brillaint musician and singer and I love his work very much end of story.

But the Doobie Brothers are Charles Thomas Johnston and Patrick Simmons always will be

  • Great Video. One of their best songs.

  • damm there good

I can play that song and sing it to the t

  • @MrSixbanger Lovely lovely. I am an accomplished guitarist and the Doobies were so part of my childhood but I never bothered to learnt this song. I am going to spend all of tommorow learning it.

Imagine sitting on a lovely day drinking beer with your special person with you and looking out over a beautiful sunset over the ocean and all in life is well. That is what the images of this song conjours up to me!

Love and Peace and keep the Doobies faith man :) XXX

  • damm there good

  • Pat Simmons is a GOD.

  • Anybody know what model Gibson he's playing? Can't find it on the Gibson website.

  • AMBASSADORS of ROCK&ROLL.........soothing music.....for a restless world

  • ABSOLUTELY GREAT MUSIC!!!!!!!!

  • Outstanding!!

  • Best Doobie Brothers song of all time.

  • Fantabulamazing,Liked the pedal steel guitar and trumpet playing. It sounded real great through a pair of sennheiser headphones.

  • michael mcdonald my ass ..............he sang one good song " takin to the streets" .the rest is a bunch of mumblin bs....the doobie are nothing without pat and tommy ......glad they ran his goofy mumblin ass off...

  • I love them! It really makes me miss the good old days. This is my fave by them, but then again, all their music is so great, it's hard to pick a favorite.

  • Absolutely great song ;>

  • their most under rated song.

  • @ybnrml3 Absolutely!!! Why this was never a bigger hit is beyond me!!!..I never hear it on classic rock stations!!

  • Good God doctoryes007, Michael McDonald simply filled in...listen...open your ears. Michael McDonald my bootay!

  • Everytime I think the the Doobies aren't the same without Michael McD, I hear this song and am reminded that they are a damn fine band, regardless.

  • What were once vices are now habits........Not only is the album and title epic but so aplies to where we are now as a country. Gd bls the Doobies.

  • The Doobie Brothers are my all time favorite band bar none. They drew me into music which I never really listened too in my early days..now I cannot get enough of good tunes especially from the doobies!

  • me too, I love this song

  • This was my favorite song when I was a teenager, I love this song, the lyrics are so beautiful......its a great old song.

  • dit nummer heb ik heel veel goede herinneringen

het geef je een warm gevoel, the boobies zijn daarom voor mij heelemaal top

ik had ze graag live willen zien. maar dank zij You tube kan ik het. GEWELIG

  • Brilliant, what a great band!

  • dedicated to my beautiful wife marie .doobie brothers the best band ever, keep on rockin;...............new album is superb.........

  • Im 17 and as old as The doobie brothers get ill always love'em. let the southern rock blast, roll a big one and let your worries slip away!!

  • Muscianship at its best!

  • My favorite Doobies song...followed closely by "BlackWater".....

  • My all-time fave DB song forever and ever amen ;)

  • Pat Simmons was in a couple of my classes at Leigh High School. Who would have guessed he'd be famous?

  • @SIMKINETICS It's a small world huh?

  • @TheRandombk Yup! I always wondered about these lyrics. Does 'South City' refer to San Jose, south of SF, where Pat lived, or is it South San Francisco? Back in the day, we called SF 'the city'. And is 'Midnight Lady' a hooker or is she a one-night stand? Whatever the case, they're great lyrics that make a haunting song!

  • @SIMKINETICS great lyrics, and a great song at that too.

  • @SIMKINETICS you live near any major city, its referred to as "the city".gee, i lived in northern new jersey, "the city", was new york. moved to southern new jersey, everyone call philly "the city".of course ny will always be the city. and agreed, great song.

  • @slowuroll2000 Pat Simmons was from San Jose, which is now the big city of the Bay Area! Back then, it was SF. Go figure! Hippie-land became Silicon Valley; go figure again! Every great song becomes a bit of history, a moment in time & place.

  • THIS "BEEAUTIFUL SONG" IS DEDICATED TO MY DADDY M.H RAHN!!!...I MISS YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!!!LOVE YOU FOREVER & EVER, JULIE RAHN TUCKER!

  • Hands Down One Of The Best Bands Ever!

  • My VERY #1 favorite Band

since the first time I heard them in the early 70ies (Toulouse Street).

Best Album the made (to me) "what were once vices are now now habits"

I had to buy the record twice, because I used to hear it so often that it started to make scratchy noise. Had the chance to them in the States in their original line up during their "Cycle Tour" that was really really really great, I enjoyed every single second of it.

    Great Band
