I've always been amazed at the sheer idiocy of this type of behavior. I used to work for the railroad and was on Train Service for a week, and I always wondered why people risk their lives by putting their little bodies in opposition to a train. Who in hell do they think is going to give first?
On a related note, these people were seriously violating the law by trespassing alone.
There's a difference between ignorant and stupid: ignornat is when you don't know any better. stupid is when people like this can't wait to go to a padres game so would risk their lives by crawling under a train because they're impatient. Stupidity is intolerable in this case. It sucks because this is why people want to put railroad tracks underground or above ground (which makes railfanning nearly impossible), when all of this is completely avoidable. Common sense.

San Diego only runs two freight trains... the 12AM and the 12PM. I'm guessing this was the 12PM train. I think an easy solution would be to schedule the start of the games for 1 instead of 12. Either that or have BNSF schedule the 12PM train to leave at 11AM from now on. Or am I asking the impossible here? lol Otherwise, sure, build a pedestrian overpass if the city has the budget. :)

@whitingguy Sent my video to BNSF Police, they sent video to Operation Lifesaver, Operation lifesaver had a major safety event at this crossing back in September, the San Diego Police Department, Harbor Police and BNSF Police issued multiple situations, gave out tickets and made 5 arrests within a 4 hour period. BNSF Police also sent me a detailed Thank You letter. Lets just say this crossing is now patrolled 24/7.

@Tcostello105 oh by the way,the railroad police WILL do more than the local police,so i strongly suggest calling them if the local police dont do anything.here in hammod/whiting indiana the local police dont even stop the people going around the railroad gates.and this one guy i know has like 6 or seven photos of Easygo busses going around the railroad gates.and the people here cant justify long trains from short.i actually got the nerve to yell at someone trying to go around just for an amtrak

I would never risk it unless I was physically dying. If one of those huge axles gets you and that flange starts cutting away at your body, you are as good as gone. Even if you survive,, you will be lucky if you have a single arm or leg left. People get too carried away over sports at times. I love football and baseball but I would never do that. Its too stupid and too dangerous. I am a volunteer firefighter and I personally think that this is more dangerous than firefighting. Stupidity.

Here's the deal safety boy...
First of all, as you mentioned, BNSF should NOT be blocking crossings in a big city like San Diego for more than five minutes.
Second, BNSF should have had a utility man or member of the crew protect the crossing.
As for what I would have done ?...
I would have climbed over the train.
Unless you are completely retarded and/or physically uncoordinated, there is nothing difficult about using step ladders and grab irons to cross over.

@gumball469 45 minutes is too long. Some are only 5 minutes according to local statute. Others may be 10 minutes.
The baseball club should inform the railroad of their schedule.
They should provide a pedestrian bridge if this frequently happens.

I'd build a walkway over the tracks, so Padres fans or convention goers (especially during Comic Con) won't needlessly be delayed by the train, nor risk their lives crossing it when the train's on the tracks.
