@scpeezy843 I just use about a cup of corn meal and a few tablespoons of flour, mix with water till pasty and the heat will cook it making a good seal.
How well did the cream seperator work for you as the head? Did you have to pack the tube with copper? Have you ever thought about puting a heating element or two in the drum? It would save you from haveing to use propane! Thanks for all the info!
@bigbrowncow1 I just like the control I have with the propane, once its hot you can really dial it in on how fast or slow you want it to run. The head works great!
And that keeps it from surging and keeps it running smooth. Just letting you know if you do a drum set up, cut up copper to fit inside so the boiling area is increased. You need not do it with a flat bottom still.
@TheLittlelaurel I R-E-A-L-L-Y Do Love Your Set-Up!!!!!!! I Would Love To Talk More In Depth With You About It!!!!!!! It Is A-B-S-O-L-U-T-E-L-Y Bad-Ass!!!!!!! Do Yo Think That There Is A-N-Y Way That You Could E-Mail Me?
Your head will explode if you listen to all the shit out there about making shine. Mine comes out clean and clear, I add nothing! Run it a little slow for purity a little faster for some flavor but lower proof. Britta will not hurt the taste. Just doing it and playing with your set-up will help you get into a grove, thats how I came up with my design, traditional old school with a modern twist. Since I use a drum on its side I have learned that it will surge, I keep copper tubes in the bottom.
@TheLittlelaurel Good buy there. With that, your set-up is bad ass. Hat's off to you sir. About the Brita, i know they are super good filter's but do you think it will strip some flavor out? I guess it would be an acceptible sacrifice considering the fact in needs to be filtered but i wonder if you could tell the difference. Also i watched a vid where people were putting active charcole dirrectly into the mash to remove mathonal and other bad stuff and then using a clearifier.
@TheLittlelaurel Continued: I wounder if putting that powdered charcole in the mash then using the clearfier to get it clear again would ruin the flavor? I would assume that would be the safest way to remove the bad stuff but it's definantly not old school and i want to try to stay loyal to the old ways. It's hard to find the line between the old and new methods of doing this fine art but keeping things safe is a major priority. Anyway, you have the best set-up i've seen yet.
Thump keg, you can fill the thumper with single run and the steam will double it, making doubled shine (ran twice). I like to have enough shine for one big double run, it don't filter it just makes it more pure and higher proof. That is what I do, you can run a thump keg but I like to do a doubled run my-self. You can also get a column and packing that will pretty do the doubling in one run, I tried it, takes to long. Thanks for asking.
Why don't you use a thump keg? Doesn't it filter out the impurities? I'm doing research and it looks like everyone skips this step. I would think that's a major step in the process. Not hatin just want mine to be perfect.
Some ass-hole told me to spend a few bucks. $300 for the drum, $200 for the coller. $100 for the cap, $100 for the double wall condenser $200 for the caged water totes, $500 for the welding of the stainless and you have the pump, burner, propane, fittings and the grain I have milled then the sugar. The shipping for all was $200 more or less, add that up.
There is a formula on line for figuring out the amount needed to be set aside for the Zippo lighter, you can make this hobby complicated and get confused with all the crap on-line though. Most old moonshiners never threw any out, you got the head, heart and tails all into one batch and cut with backings or spring water, it can give you a hangover, but so will the good stuff also even with it removed. Lead salts were bad back in the day.
If your going to make a small amount you need to dump 2 oz or a shot glass because it contains methanol, if your going to make bigger amounts i say dump more than 2 oz i could be wrong, im a brewer and never have dealt with moonshine before
That rig really is nice! I have a question concerning the run. When running that quantity, how much is cut as the head run? How about the tail run? What determines where to cut the tail run?
@ricktoven2 You can get a parrot and monitor the out-put and the scale on the hydrometer and it will tell you when you hearts are coming out. I always run 50-gal and throw the first 2/3 out and taste it as it comes out, I get about 4-good gal from a run and 5 if you keep the heads and tails. The mash used over the 2nd time is the sour mash run and you wiill get even more on that run.
what material is the pot made of is that a stainless steel drum i know the cap is old milk jug but what are you using as mash pot or beer pot if it is stainless steel where can i find one of those ???/
How do you make your paste if you don't mind me asking you can email if you like thanks bro it will help me out johnsislandpeezy@aol.com

I did a good 5-gal. Ran it slow, more of a trickle than a stream. Very tasty, used 1/2 brown sugar and 1/2 white sugar.
