  • Imagine if they were in today, the cautions would be like 20 laps long lol

  • i see these rules didnt last to long

  • You know, they could have just instituted pit road speed limits and not had any of this.

    Holy fuck.

  • You see What Crack does to people?

  • It typifies NASCAR's inability to figure out how things work - notice how no mention is made of the REAL problem; the rule closing pit road and forcing everyone to be thrown into pit road all at once instead of letting them dive into the pits when THEY want to when the yellow comes out - they had the staggering they wanted before they started closing pit road when the yellow comes out.

Get rid of the rule closing pit road. Period. Get the officiating tower out of controlling the racing.

  • @STP43FAN1 They close pit when a caution is out because some people may be lucky and be coming in turn 3 when the caution comes out and enter pits immediately while somebody going past start/finish line will be affected. These takes out luck when the caution comes out and gives the opportunity for everybody to enter the pits at the same time.

  • @JorgeLBM There is that element of it, but it wasn't as unfair as some made it out to be, and it was definately safer.

  • Insane! I wish I had been at the first meeting where they dropped this on chiefs and drivers.

  • 1:02 is the music playing really appropriate for the death of a man?

  • Lol, that is crazy.

  • WTF, I had actually never heard of this (was 2 years old in '91). What an absurd set of rules. I have a feeling Ned Jarrett didn;t even get it.

  • @TheNOBAMA2012 He just read the rules off the card. I'm sure he thought they were retarded as hell.

  • The 5 Armed Forces Cars are in the infield

  • Who's in the blue #26 car? It's not Brett Bodine becase of course the Q at 1:54? BGN race or something?

  • @AutoRockinRacing94 It was an ARCA car.

  • @AutoRockinRacing94 not sure, but the car was from the ARCA race the weekend before

  • well, it was only a year after the driver died at atlanta. now, the rules were stupid, but they were trying to protect the crews.

  • so if your sponser has an even number of letters you can pit every 50 laps. The 50 laps are determined by when you take your first pit stop but it cant be on lap 6 or 125 and if your sponser has an odd # you dont have to follow any rules at all just drive darnit drive!!!!

  • a bit confusing i didnt understand at all did they ever change them again

  • I think the 1973 Formula Two points system was more screwed up then this IMO

  • I know, it was determined by certain amount of races count. What! I understand perimeters more than this system!

  • One of these days, it will get back to just running a race.

  • i like the pit rules like they are now

  • Nascar is still messing with pit rules, look at this year with the truck series, the crews have to refuel the car, then come back around and then change tires.

  • ....What?

How about..we just, drive into the pits..pull into our box, get our stop done, and get out?

  • I keep watching this video, and everytime I'm just as lost as I was the first time I watched it.

  • Jesus Christ this was convoluted. I was 4 or 5 when the death happened at Atlanta, and it's good that they tried to improve pit road safety...but this was pretty stupid.

  • This is so typical of NASCAR. Try instituting a new rule they think will work. It does not work out well, so they do away with it

  • these rules were because a pit member died in the pits in 1990.

  • Does somebody have the Full Version of the Pit Road Crashes at Talladega and at Atlanta in 1990 with sounds. But that has to be the most confusing rule ever in Auto Racing History! Why? Odd Car Numbers and Even Car Numberss had to come in together by a group. No Tire Change! Green Flag Pit Stops after two or more laps under the Green flag. Whack! Confusing!

  • TYPICAL NASCAR

  • I remember that!! Ha! Ha! That went over like a fart in a space suit!

  • So what does this have to do with Dale Earnhardt hitting a seagull?

  • 1 more thing, is this the only race they did this?

  • i guess not

  • They had at Daytona and ended at Bristol, after that it has not exist.

  • What dumbass thought that up?

  • omfg, no wonder those rules aren't used today. Everyt driver, I think, would be going insane trying to figure it out- only making it worse it's in the BIGGEST race of the season!!!

  • That had to be the most confusing set of rules ever and because of those rules, in the 500 and in the 125's, there were a lot of blown tires after restarts on tires that worn out, but the good thing that did come out of it was the pit road speed limit.

  • I think I got it all down. Ok so if your primary sponsor is a food product, you can change tires on the even lapse. If your primary sponsor is not a food product, you can change tires on the odd laps except for 7,11 and lucky number 13. If your primary sponsor is not a food product but somehow contains cheese, you can change tires any time plus your crew gets free milk and cookies every 50 laps. Also, if you have a alcohal sponsor, and you lead a lap with the number 4 in it, everybody drinks.

  • LOL nice man

  • BINGO

  • Score.

  • I kinda wish NASCAR brought these rules back.

  • Why???

  • Well, I now regret saying that. Pit crew members have helmets, and that's good enough.

  • I wish NASCAR was "kinda" smart.

  • Wow, no tire changes under caution. You would never get to change tires nowadays. We rarely have "Green Flag Stops" now.

  • Wow this was confusing.

  • WTF odd cars even cars

  • it means the car in the first stall is odd, second stall even etc..

  • I can see how it would work, seeing that stops would happen only after the Restart. But they could've made it a little better. For instance, instead of determining odd/even cars by starting position, why not by pit selection? That way everyone gets an entire pit box gap between them and others pitting. Seems like it could work, and some of the stops we have these days are just asking for the crazy 1991 rules to come back.

  • It really wasn't THAT hard to understand.

But I agree, having a pit road speed makes a lot more sense, lol.

  • lol thats makes no sense

  • Weird question: Who was the guy everyone was talking about? My guess is Earnhardt but I'm just curious.

  • yea it was earnhardt

  • GOOD JOB I LOVE THIS RACE

  • worst rules EVER. glad they arent in effect anymore.

  • thats some bullshit right there.

  • WTF!

  • Wow Im glad NASCAR got wise....that was so very confusing. I couldnt imagine what it was like for drivers and crews trying to follow all this

  • How long did these absurd rules last?

  • they were last used at Bristol in the 6th race of the season

  • Apparently, they also used double-file restarts similar to what the Grand National Divisions of NASCAR currently use in that race at Bristol. It's why there were 40 lead changes in the race.

  • @battalionfan888 Well because obviously NASCAR tried something and it didn't work so they FIXED IT!!!! And came up with a speed limit on pit road which I think is reasonable. If it was Brian France he would have kept these rules in play because he wouldn't want to admit he's wrong.

  • @AngryGundamGamer ...because he is a raging douchebag!!!
