the problem with steel wool is that iron burns when oxygen is added to it, if you put a steel wool pad on a string and set fire to it then swing it around it will glow and throw sparks because your adding oxygen to it by swinging it around
You can get the fine bronze wool at acehardware. Should be with the paint and sandpaper. If they dont stock it they should be able to order it. I dont know what to tell you about the lye. Should be at lowes with the drain cleaning chemicals. I can send you the link where I got my KOH if you want. Let me know if I can help.
Thanks man but I was using lye , and I have some SS wool on order. It just seams their is alot of thing the my local store do not carry, I live near Pittsburgh, its a big area, I called all the lowes with in 30 miles, big list , and none carry reobic, wierd. It just sucks to wait a weak or more just for something as simple like as lye. Thanks pat I enjoy all your work.
I have found that the flow restriction caused by this type of flash back suppression too high. But my flow rates are a good bit higher than what you have there.
I have become quite fond of the spring loaded pressure relief type flash back devices. These seem to work well and do not restrict the flow of HHO. Basically, your party balloon membrane but with a automatic reset.
I set the whole thing up (pop off and flashback including the lowes trip) in about 2 hours, it was my first attemp at a real torch. I have about 4 hour playing with it now and everything is working good SO far, I'll put a video responce up showint the mini flame. I cant believe how huch heat is in that tiny 1 inch flame.
a baffled device similar in design to a pistol silencer stuffed with bronze wool might work. steel burns, bronze self extinguishes.
but I still think the flow restriction would cause excessive back pressure ... if you pressurize HHO and a flash back gets past your device and into a pressurized container, the results could be catastrophic ...
use caution ... the larger pipe means larger volume ... safer to reduce the volume contained and give impulse somewhere to go in a controlled way ...
Your right , we are just in two diffent worlds with output numbers. I have yet to break the 1 LPM, then I'll start to learn what you already have. I'm going to lowes for a few more arrestor setup's I would like to test how lightly I can pack the steel wool befor it flash's and hits my current arrestor.
steel wool is a problem ... it will ignite and continue to burn until it is consumed ... bronze wool will get hot, start to ignite, then self extinguish ... this is why so many have had some success with the bronze wool ... steel wool will give you problems I fear ... search eBay ... marine suppliers ... bronze wool is easy to get online ...
I know I was not even going to try it but my torch would have been sitting there waiting for the mail, I have some stainless steel wool on the way. Did you see that tiny flame.
yes ... as you get more experience with the hydroxy torch, you will become addicted ... you will want more and more ... once you get one of these things up to about 5-6 lpm of flow through an orifice about .035, you will find that the thing can cut through 1/4 steel plate like hot knife through butter ... can cut through tungsten ... this is a valuable commercial application for our devices that is practical now ...
but, along the way you will have learn how to manage fairly large volumes of gas without blowing yourself to kingdom come ... so go slowly and work to perfect your delivery and safety devices ... it stops being fun when you have to dodge pieces of your bubbler flying at you at high velocity ...
I have not tried that one ... I have tried mixing a variety of inert gasses, CO2, nitrogen and argon ... some interesting effects from the mixed gasses but I do not know enough about welding to be able to quantify or determine utility ... I would be concerned about using anything with high velocity for fear of spalttering molten material somewhere unplanned ... but again, my knowleged of welding/cutting is limited ... I am winging it, learning as I go ...
Yeah that the point of blowin the air , your fuel getts the metal to liquid hot and the air just puff's it out the way, it cuts the amount of fuel you need to cut metal, the hho flame has the heat just nothing to push the metal out of the way. And as for you winging it, you seam to know more then most.
I made a simple flash back arrester from stainless steel wool as well, the manufacturer told me it can handle 800 degrees Celsius. The stainless steel wool doesn't burn at all and it is working perfect so far. Not that I did a lot of testing yet, but after I packed it closely it worked great.
I did get it from Germany, they did send me a free package to do some test with it, they where curious as well if it would work, the brand name is Rakso. I live in Europ, the Netherlands. I didn;t dare to tell people because I didn't do a lot of testing yet.
I did a test with a propane burner to see if the Stainless steel wool would burn, but it didn't. The stainless steel wool is glowing when I put a flame on it, just like the Bronze wool. Bit if people do want to use stainless steel wool do some testing before you blow your fuel cell.
I had the same problem with finding bronze wool, there is not one single company selling it in Europe, I had to order it from the US but shipping cost are to expensive compared to the prize of the Bronze wool. So I tried the free STAINLESS STEEL wool and I was surprised too, because I did see some videos that showed that normal steel wool burns away very fast when you point a flame at it, even when touching with a 9 volt DC battery.

I was just thinking wouldn't a 3inch pipe or bigger full of wool do the same for like 5 lpm but let hho pass just like a small one with small lpm.

Have you tried to blow some fresh air into the cut just like you would with an acly/oxy torch.

Just my little torch makes a pop can glow so white it gave me a tiny touch of welder flash after like 15 minutes of playing.

go to AAA Chemicals...you can buy KOH $20 will buy you 4lbs.

Looks like you need a smaller hole for output and more volume, mine would not stay lit until i reached over 2 LPM.

Thanks but after the vifeo I took the arrestor put some more wool in and lite a nice torch, with only about 500-700ml. I'll post a video in a few.

Check out my video #23 I have a tiny torch with only about .5 LPM.

That was a meant to be said regular steal wool, but if I'm ordering something it should be SS. Where did you get yours from.

There is a blow out port on the small bubbler, so I dont have a lot of fear about testing the flashback arrestor.
