@ajbenius Unless your stuck with windows XP you could play shogun with vista in min specs. You don't need an alienware computer to play games with good graphics, bro.
@ajbenius I don't think that unit strength matters all that much. You opponent and you have access to basically the same units, and I think actually makes it harder than previous games, like Medieval II. Once I have Polish Knights (and combine them with Polish Nobles), whatever I face loses. A little harder to that in Shogun 2 than in Medieval II.
What?! This is your 63rd game just in the Napoleon Series, you've had countless more games from other Total War series which helps a ton!! I've had Napoleon for a month and have only done 4 MP games!! D:
the reason why the famed sqaure is so efective is because when u r in a sqaure u u can not be attacked from behind, when u have a rank kneeling with their rifles and bayonets pionted toward your enemy and the same as the second rank u have a wall bayontes that im prety sure are intimadating to the rider and the horse so the horse might through u off or u could and your horse could get stabed by the bayonets
On what graphics did you play napoleon total war as i have the same computer as you and i lag on high, but your napoleon total war looks like very high recording with fraps and no lag.
@EviIDuck If everyone was far apart, what would happen when the officers ordered a charge? Instead of a tight block of soldiers running, you would have a loose band of soldiers which would be a lot easier to fight off. Plus, guns were pretty loud so the soldiers should be close to the officer so that they would know what to do.
@EviIDuck muskets of that time were not very accurate, so by firing as a massed group, they acted sort of like a huge, linear shotgun. It was more effective and terrifying that way... imagine being on the receiving end of a full volley.
@SykotekDude you can find the demo on steam, also you could try shogun 2: total war as well, i've been playing it for the last 5 days and it's awesome
We can't hear you when you zoom in close the combat. The war crys and what not outsound your voice. Either turn the volume down up or you gotta yell. [dont yell]
I fail to see how forming a square gives you anny protection from cavalry. surlely a normal formation would be beter because you have many ranks of men to adsorb the charge not just two or three, and when the cavalry has charged its just melee and it wouldent mater that the guys behind you have formed a square.
@PrinceofMacedon The square formation absorbs the shock of the charge and when the guy either falls off the horse or is stuck in the center they are automtacly surronded. He cant break out because he has so little room to charge
@PrinceofMacedon if they did not adopt square formation then the cave would swing around the back of the formation. but its actuallyquite difficult to get youre men in square and for them to maintain the formation whil hunderds of horses make the ground tremmble only traind men with some experians good form and maintain a square. and the squares where ussualy 4 ranks deep enougf to give a deadly woley and a wall of bajonets
@PrinceofMacedon i addition to that, its not like muskets were like pikes, they could hardly do a phalanx. A square was a equally balanced, tight formation which allowed bayonets to be used in combination with several other rows, making them equivilent to a small wall of spears and the packed formation ensured that even if cav did break through, they would have nowhere to run, especially with the initial charge power being decimated by the first line.
Actually battlefield changed in a swamp, because it was raining the day before Waterloo, and Napoleon thought it would dry up but it wouldn't. Anyway, swamp + infantry square = cavalry slaughter
@PrinceofMacedon Wasn't the real purpose of the square to fire at the cavalry and keep them at a distance, though? I think it's more about killing the charging forces off at the right distance than it is about absorbing a charge--I think a square might get run over in a charge if the men with the muskets failed to shoot down the horses.
@ruebuscm ur right in a way but technically a square formation was meant to fire at the approaching cavalry from a distance of about 30 meters. that would cause a pile of dead horses and horsemen thereby obstructing the cavalry charge and rendering it ineffective.
if the infantry opened fire at less than 30 meteres, chances were that the dying horse could break through their ranks and while firing at more than 30 mteres, it would just leave the infantry men with emtpty muskets.
@PrinceofMacedon Square probably worked in real life because they had more men IRl so they could get more ranks, and square has the advantage of being unflankable.
@PrinceofMacedon i have a good computer that will play the game but the game wont play good cuz the graphics suck,do u think if i buy a better graphics card that would fix it up?
@PrinceofMacedon Yeah like 10000 horses of Napoleon's charged the sqaures and got fucked of them ... especaily that duke of wellington was between them :P
@PrinceofMacedon Very true, Ney slaughtered his cavalry by charging endlessly against the Coalition flank´s infantry line formed in squares. During one of these charges, Ney himself was beating a cannon out of frustration
@EviIDuck I don't know the relations in napoleonic time, but in medieval time, mounted knights were extremely superior in melee range. You don't have a lot options to take down heavy cavalry. I think the square is much more resistant to a charge cause the front line kneels down and the men are standing closer. Also a square can't get charged from behind
@EviIDuck The reason why is because the square is designed for countering cav, two or three rows kneel while a third stands and the horsed get bayonetted, while the ones in the rear and in the front as well typically to shooting. Plus once the horsed made contact they viewed the wall of people as a solid concrete or brick wall and would refuse to move so the rider was screwed. This was the same with the line formation. Usually cav would hit the flanks if given the opportunity.
@EviIDuck you have to think that you have 3 ranks of muskets so when the cavalry charge they fire by ranks when the cavalry are quite close so some horses and men are killed, fall down, trip up the next load of them etc etc which quickly destroys a charge. this happens from all sides
@EviIDuck Squares ensured that cav could not outflank the formation. Plus, soldiers felt the morale effects of knowing there were comrades covering their back.
The deal was, as I recall, that infantry generally should win against cavalry whether they are in a square or not. The problem historically, however, was that infantry in line would get disorganized and some would retreat owing to the shock of the cavalry charge. The square formation forces the infantry to stay their ground.
@EviIDuck than you must also fail to have eyes. cavalry charging square in game causes cavalrymen to get bucked off their horses, but if infantry are not in square, the men will get chucked. plus a spuare has all around protection while a line only can fire from the front. have you seen or red how fast infantry rout from a flank or rear charge? cavalry can easily rip apart infantry not in square and sure you can overwealm them with melee, but it would just cost you more men
@EviIDuck it was more a mental discouragement to the horse - there were three ranks of bayonets and not many horses would charge straight into them, they would just get shot to pieces. Also there backs were protected because the horses couldn't get in behind; which they excelled at.
@EviIDuck in reality, the cavalry couldnt charge the square, its animal psychology. they see all these bayonets protruding from this square, they wont charge into it w/o great amount of force from the rider by which point the charge has been slowed down drastically, lost much of its momentum, and now are easier targets to fire on
@EviIDuck The Cavalry would just break through a line as at most it would only be 3 ranks deep. Also it had very vunerable flanks.
A square is a more solid formation and as long as moral held could not be broken. Horses won't charge straight into a solid formation of men with muskets with bayonets no matter what the rider wants to do.
@EviIDuck You can't make a horse charge straight into a wall of bayonets. The horse will stop or go around so there will be no melee. Instead there'll be a fire fight between infantry and cavalry where the infantry will have far superior fire power. If the infantrymen are in a line the cavalrymen could attack their rear or flanks. That's not possible with the infantry in a square. It's simply a matter of horse psychology.
@EviIDuck i don't know it it exactly works but it did in real life battle. I am thinking when the front row knees down they could kind of stick their rifles on the ground with the bayonet facing the charging horse and skewer the horse. Most cases the horse will just refuse to charge into the box formation.
@EviIDuck When cavalry charge, they are like a spear - they pierce through your ranks. So if you remain in regular formation, a column of five men will be annihilated by the horsemen. However, in a square, only two or three men are in the heat of battle. Also, cavalry create chaos amongst your ranks - it's a mess of melee. A square protects all sides of the contingent, allowing omnipresent protection.
@EviIDuck I think a normal formation would work to the same extent if you could deploy the front row into a crouched bayonet position but you can't, also square formation prevents cavalry from wrapping around the corners of a division which in your description would not be protected.
@EviIDuck A cav charge is dependent on that the infantry breaks formation at least a bit. You cant spur a horse onto the front of a formation. Then they stop. In a good square you only have fronts. As long as the soldiers in the square holds the formation, the cav wont stand a chance because the horses wont charge
I guess because while a couple ranks of men hold them, the second rank from the rest of the square can shoot the horsemen? I dunno, I agree with you. I know it worked in real life but I don't see how.
@midgetydeath Guess the whole point was having the cavalry trapped and with no space to charge and get out. Like driving them to the trap inside the square, and of course, shoot and stab once inside.
The square uses simple animal psychology. Horses won't charge onto the bayonets (or stakes, pikes, sharp sticks etc.). As the square has no "rear" side to be attacked from, the cavalry can just circle around it, while being hacked down by aimed shots from the rear line (at least one line would keep their muskets loaded), but couldn't force the horses to break the square. That is why a square is virtually impenetrable by cavalry. It was a good artillery target, though.
idk if you can but you should have taken his cannons 1 of your foot untis and started shooting at his back with his own cannons=P woulda made him feel silly.
i found it funny at the end when his final group of men started to rout, you see them running for their lives and when PoM zoomed out, you see a complete army chasing one group of men.
hey prince, thanks for meeting our requests for a russia video, i love suvorov, and i enjoy to see using his tactics. and you will absolutley love shogun 2, i know I do. the cinamatics are awesome. but I play campaign, and i dont believe you do. but the diversity of units is also great, you can have spear walls from rtw, to muskets, but great vid, peace.
@KingOfNormans because I didn't need to. His troops got annihilated by me as they charged up the ridge. If I would've charged into his men, then I would've been exposed early on to his voltigeurs. I'd rather let his fusiliers come at me, blast them out of the way, and THEN charge into his voltigeurs.
Once again another nice battle, skills from ancient world transfer brillaintly! You would really like shogun if only for the multiplayer, its really suited to the way you play.
Hey Prince, you might take a while to get use to Shogun 2's style, I kind of don't like it, Units break morale way too quick, like my Elite Warriors broke morale with 50 men Left, its a bit ridiculous, hopefully it gets better.
Hey pom. It gets kind of hard to hear you talk during the battle, the sfx kind of overpowers you, anyway to fix it for future videos? Great battle as always!
@mikeythegreatable yeah, I'll try to. The sound fx in this game are a lot different than RTW's. When you zoom in on an RTW battle, the sound doesn't increase that much. But in NTW, it increases 10-fold
Didn't you care whether your men were exhausted? they lose 75% of their effectiveness, an elite unit can be as difficult to crush as it is to whipe out militia under these circumstanses :P still an awesome vid... I need to play some NTW now xD
Started playing Napoleon Total War yesterday all I can say is it is the definition of godlike!! I have hardly stopped playing apart from sleep xD I don't understand how it can run so smoothly being a later released game, ETW lagged a bit on my pc, especially on ending turns. on NTW there hasn't been any lag!! That's coming from someone with a 9 year old PC!!!
Did anyone else know France was first lead by a woman who dressed as a man!? its true.. look it up. She tied her hair up in a tight bun and hid her boobies and lead the country or cuntry of France from 1812- 1865 :)
Dont expect russia and france to fight in a desert.

SHOGUN 2 SUCKS!!!! THAT'S WHY I DON'T HAVE IT. IT'S EXPENSIVE AND REQUIRES A SUPER COMPUTER TO RUN. INSTEAD OF STRATEGY, YOU RELY ON UNIT STRENGTH.
Okay, sorry for typing in caps, but I think that Shogun 2 is totally overrated.

As long as the soldiers in the square holds the formation, the cav wont stand a chance because the horses wont charge
Riksosten95 9 months ago
@EviIDuck
I guess because while a couple ranks of men hold them, the second rank from the rest of the square can shoot the horsemen? I dunno, I agree with you. I know it worked in real life but I don't see how.
midgetydeath 7 months ago
@midgetydeath Guess the whole point was having the cavalry trapped and with no space to charge and get out. Like driving them to the trap inside the square, and of course, shoot and stab once inside.
x0Beck0x 7 months ago
@EviIDuck
It was a good artillery target, though.
kolmanjan 7 months ago
@EviIDuck Its animal pyschology. Horses won't charge into a square of men with bayonets. Don't know why.
vikingcrest12 7 months ago
@EviIDuck it was because a square gives you 360 degree protection and solders would have their bayonets pointed outward like a spear wall
brotherhoodz97 7 months ago
@EviIDuck Napoleon also used the square to destroy the Egyptian Mamlukes.

Noob question here: How do you put experience on your men?...such as your cav units and line infantry in this vid.
Great Vid
jackbrentner 11 months ago
An excellent video! Thanks PoM!
sonofecthelion 11 months ago
i found it funny at the end when his final group of men started to rout, you see them running for their lives and when PoM zoomed out, you see a complete army chasing one group of men.
TheBoontonBomber 11 months ago
80% of the comments on all your videos atm have some kind of referance to Shogan total war lol.

That was the worst joke I've ever heard PoM... and I love it! xD

hey prince, thanks for meeting our requests for a russia video, i love suvorov, and i enjoy to see using his tactics. and you will absolutley love shogun 2, i know I do. the cinamatics are awesome. but I play campaign, and i dont believe you do. but the diversity of units is also great, you can have spear walls from rtw, to muskets, but great vid, peace.
totalwarruler 11 months ago
I love these NTW videos and I hope you will go back to being Suvorov incarnate in battle.

what is your graphics card and your processor.
durango562 11 months ago
@PrinceofMacedon Of course I saw them. I just wanted to know why you didn't do so in this particular battle.
KingOfNormans 11 months ago
@KingOfNormans because I didn't need to. His troops got annihilated by me as they charged up the ridge. If I would've charged into his men, then I would've been exposed early on to his voltigeurs. I'd rather let his fusiliers come at me, blast them out of the way, and THEN charge into his voltigeurs.
PrinceofMacedon 11 months ago
Once again another nice battle, skills from ancient world transfer brillaintly! You would really like shogun if only for the multiplayer, its really suited to the way you play.

DiVeronica 11 months ago
Hey Prince, you might take a while to get use to Shogun 2's style, I kind of don't like it, Units break morale way too quick, like my Elite Warriors broke morale with 50 men Left, its a bit ridiculous, hopefully it gets better.
Packerton 11 months ago
Hey pom. It gets kind of hard to hear you talk during the battle, the sfx kind of overpowers you, anyway to fix it for future videos? Great battle as always!
mikeythegreatable 11 months ago 4
@mikeythegreatable yeah, I'll try to. The sound fx in this game are a lot different than RTW's. When you zoom in on an RTW battle, the sound doesn't increase that much. But in NTW, it increases 10-fold
PrinceofMacedon 11 months ago
@PrinceofMacedon Thanks Pom!

Great battle, Prince! =)
vcfreek 11 months ago
Didn't you care whether your men were exhausted? they lose 75% of their effectiveness, an elite unit can be as difficult to crush as it is to whipe out militia under these circumstanses :P still an awesome vid... I need to play some NTW now xD
LolFishFail 11 months ago
Started playing Napoleon Total War yesterday all I can say is it is the definition of godlike!! I have hardly stopped playing apart from sleep xD I don't understand how it can run so smoothly being a later released game, ETW lagged a bit on my pc, especially on ending turns. on NTW there hasn't been any lag!! That's coming from someone with a 9 year old PC!!!
