The two drivers who took a hard left and went sideways trying to avoid the initial collision are the causes of this. If you notice, at 2:35 you see them take hard left but they actually have clear road ahead of them because the first couple vehicles were skidding along the wall. A Fatal mistake that took the life of another driver.

I am sorry to hear the one chap died..sad news..but again with respect, that's why these guys get paid the big bucks. There is an inherent danger in the sport that is always in the background, despite the continuing efforts to make the sport safer.

The truth is this is what makes the sport exciting, not so much the crashes itself, but the fact that the potential of a crash is always there,its what gives a rush to the drivers and the sport itself.. homage to the steel balls that these guys have.

But i live in Denmark, so it is not that often i watch Nascar and indy car, but when i do and some one crashes, it just look like flames are bursting everywhere. I mean if you for example compare to Formula One, Le Mans etc. they take huge impacts and rolls and almost never burst into flames.

@GertKlinge It's not the fuel cells. It's the fuel and oil lines (and other parts) that break upon impact and those fluids contact the hot engine and exhaust. Some series, like NASCAR, have fuel line cutoffs, so that if the fuel line breaks in the engine (no positive pressure), fuel stops pumping (the fuel pump is in the rear), drastically reducing the risk of large fire. You will get a burst of flame from the fuel currently in the line, but it won't keep pumping.

.... what is the appeal in a sport like this... can you even call it a sport? cars driving fast in a circle trying to overtake each other. i guess there is a thrill in making maneuvers in tight situations, but really?? Its quite obvious something like this will happen, to make this sport safe you would not have it at all. at least in other Motorsport you're not going to drive into a turn at those speeds and there isn't a solid wall, but a runoff protecting the drivers. .... really just silly.

I think that circles circuits can´t be allowed in races. They are insecure because all of them have a wall that in any accident can kill a pilot. Or if a car stop in the middle of circuit for a problem, anyone can hit him at 300 kph or more.

@koreannz The problem is with this series, in particular, running at such incredible speeds in an open-wheel, open-cockpit vehicle at tracks they really shouldn't be running at. Even worse, Las Vegas increased it's banking from 12 to 20 degrees in 2007, making the cars stick to the turns better and allowing them to keep the throttle down in the turns, leaving these cars to go around at 220 miles per hour in an open cockpit whereas NASCAR at their fastest go 190 here. Doesn't make sense, does it?

You're right. Indy cars can't stand a direct hit. The are too poorly designed for the series the are used in. I referred to Le Mans as the cars used are better designed (better safety regulations). There have been fatal accidents at Le Mans but the last time it happened is a very long time ago. Even the Mercedes-Benz that back-flipped in the 90'es left the driver physically unharmed. And Allan McNish could walk away from the R18 he total'ed at this years race.
